Chapter 53: Episode 8 Aftermath
After a long while, Lynch was able to regain control of his body’s movements. He trembled, wiped the sweat off his forehead with both hands, and took a deep breath of fresh air before he calmed down. At this time, most of the dwarves were still lying on the ground, without much ability to move.
Lynch staggered outside the Golden Hall and found the location of the city-wide alarm that Nimo had told him about, pulling the lever forcefully. Then, a series of whistle sounds echoed throughout the Spider Cave. Many dwarf residents poked their heads out from the high platforms, looking at the mage swaying unsteadily in front of the Golden Hall. Then, the whole city became busy.
By nightfall, all the dwarves were finally settled. Many of the little guys were so scared that they became stupefied. Although the dwarf priests had ways to resolve this state, unfortunately, the healing divine skills they prepared were too few, making the healing capacity of three to five priests seem like a drop in the bucket among the numerous patients. They could only carefully watch over those who hadn’t recovered, waiting for tomorrow or the day after for gradual treatment in batches.
Lynch was merely extremely weak at the time but was now completely fine. He was the first to recover among everyone present. This was thanks to the courage he developed from encountering dangers multiple times during his adventures with Wislin and others. He was now with Moni, guarding the still-unhealed Nimo in the infirmary—the little dwarf remained comatose.
Come night, Moni fell asleep by his nephew’s bedside. A dwarf clergy member in a green robe tiptoed to Lynch, who had not yet left, and gently tugged at his clothes, signaling the mage to speak outside.
Lynch followed him outside with a belly full of doubts.
"Mr. Mage, the strong man who emerged from the transmission device seems to be waking up, and as you can see, most of the elders were quite startled during the day, it’s not good to disturb them. Here, you are our honored guest, and mages are renowned for their wisdom, so I was wondering if you could go check on that mysterious man. Moreover, I fear there might be more unexpected events..."
Lynch nodded; such a small task was naturally not difficult for him.
He walked to a separate ward, pulled open the curtain at the door, and once again saw the guy being pursued by the black dragon. He was now covered in thick bandages, with his arms and legs pinned with wooden clips, lying tied up on the bed.
Lynch approached him; the man was wrapped so tightly that even his face was covered with white cloth. Only a pair of eyes and two nostrils were left exposed. The eyes moved around, sizing up the mage. His mouth was covered with cloth, allowing only muffled "mm-mm" sounds to escape.
It seemed the dwarves were punishing him in this way out of anger for leading a giant dragon to them.
The mage chuckled and had the dwarves remove the unnecessary bindings on the "patient."
"Ah-ha! Finally, I can breathe. I was nearly suffocated," the man said loudly after the cloth was removed from his mouth. The language he spoke was not one of the commonly used languages on the continent but a dialect from the Extreme East, very similar to the Dragon Language on the continent. Lynch had previously met a mage from the East and had learned this language.
However, in this late and quiet hour, the dwarves of the entire city needed quiet sleep. Lynch picked up the bandage just removed from the man’s feet and stuffed it into his mouth. "If you have to talk, keep it down. Others need rest."
The man nodded, blinking twice. After Lynch removed the strips of cloth, the man let out a soft sigh and, speaking quietly but with anger, said, "Damn it, whose clothes are these? They stink so bad, almost made me puke. If I catch that person, I’ll surely..."
He saw that the mage was holding bandages identical to those on his body and swallowed the latter half of his sentence hard.
"What’s your name? Where are you from? Why are you being chased by a black dragon?" The mage sat beside him, asking in the same language the mysterious man used. The nearby dwarves couldn’t help but marvel at the mage’s ability to handle any situation, fluently speaking even a language that sounded a bit like a pig’s grunt.
