Chapter 194: Episode 71 Divine Staff
Vizren the Great Mage stood by the roadside, waving to Lynch and Soka: "Come with me, I have something to discuss with you."
Lynch, holding Soka’s little hand, followed him. He also had some questions for this Old Dark Elf.
The group headed towards the Black Crystal Tower. Along the way, none of the patrolling Dark Elves approached to question them; they merely glanced at the Old Mage from afar and let them pass. Lynch was not surprised by this; given Vizren’s age, he was nearly as old as the city itself, and there was no way any Dark Elf wouldn’t recognize him.
Soka’s one hand was held by Lynch, while the other clutched a ruby. In the event of an emergency, the little angel would definitely say, "You can’t see me."
As they approached the Black Crystal Tower, Lynch finally understood the damage the last explosion had caused. The black Magic Tower was surrounded by flattened buildings, and the original lounge was reduced to ruins. The ground was covered in a layer of broken stone dust, bearing a myriad of footprints.
Standing before the gates of the Black Crystal Tower, Vizren stopped and turned around. With a heavy sigh, as if making a significant decision, he spoke to Lynch: "Mage, coming from the Surface World, what do you truly think of the Dark Elves?"
"Powerful and cunning." Lynch answered without needing to think.
"Are the Dark Elves truly that powerful?" Vizren sighed, opening the doors to the Black Crystal Tower. The three climbed the stairs, arriving at the third floor of the tower. It was the same as when the Mage had last visited, an empty room with nothing in it.
The Vizren Mage gently floated up, placing his hand on the ceiling and chanting a spell. The brief incantation ended quickly, leaving the Mage little time to notice any of the words. The characters on the ceiling lit up, and with a rumbling sound, stone steps descended from the upper level.
"Come with me." Vizren led Lynch and Soka upward, and the stairs closed shut behind them.
"This is the core of the Black Crystal Tower, the place you’ve always wanted to reach." Vizren pointed to the items in the room, finally gesturing towards the staff next to the massive circular base: "That is the Prophetic God Staff. Although I don’t know what you want it for, it’s just lying there now. There are no traps or spells guarding it; you can simply pick it up and use it."
Lynch observed the face of the Old Mage, puzzled by his motives: "Mr. Vizren Mage, why are you telling me this now? Weren’t you originally trying to stop me, not wanting me to obtain the Prophetic God Staff?"
Vizren did not respond; with a wave of his hand, the roof of this level disappeared. The three suddenly felt no gravity beneath their feet, gently floating upwards. Above the level where the Prophetic God Staff was stored was the very top of the Black Crystal Tower. Now the three stood outside the tower, with a massive Flash Gold Stone above their heads.
The silent city of Ratris lay sprawled beneath their feet, offering a view of the entire urban landscape. The crisscrossing streets resembled the blood vessels of a body, while the castles of the Dark Elf Families resembled vital organs. Together they formed the foundation of the Dark Elf City.
Three magic carpets from the room below floated up, hovering behind them. Soka patted a carpet with her small hand, confirmed it was floating in the air and wouldn’t fall to the ground, then leapt up to sit on it. Lynch waited for the Great Mage to take a seat before settling next to Soka.
"Human, the Prophetic God Staff is indeed a powerful artifact; it can see events that will happen in the near future. But I must warn you, it’s so powerful that it becomes detestable." The Vizren Mage used "Mage’s Hand" to lift the Prophetic God Staff to his side, gently stroking it, then abruptly tossing it aside.
Lynch observed Vizren’s contradictory behavior and decided to hold his peace.
"The Prophetic God Staff is a good thing; the Dark Elves have used its power to overcome numerous difficulties. But it wasn’t until recently that I understood the true meaning of this Prophetic God Staff," Vizren wiped his hand, which had touched the staff, with a handkerchief: "It doesn’t show you the future, but rather a path towards it. I’ve recognized the limitations of this staff, so feel free to take it and use it. I no longer need it, and neither do the Dark Elves."
