Chapter 39: Chapter 40: Brandan, I’m scared

Brandan walked over, and he heard her softly call his name: "Brandan..."

He slightly raised his head and glanced at Iris.

Iris was not awake, only her delicate brows were furrowed in pain, calling his name: "Brandan..."

Clearly, it was he who caused her such suffering, yet in her most painful moments, she was still calling his name.

Brandan felt something indescribable in his heart; he stood by the bedside, quietly watching her for a while, then reached out and gently held her cold hand.

Iris’s fingers were icy, without a hint of warmth, her palm slick with cold sweat. Feeling his touch, despite having no conscious awareness, she still trembled and tried to wrench free.

Brandan’s expression grew somber; unable to resist, he tightened his grip on her fingers, enclosing her cold, slender hand in his palm.

He stayed with her through the night.

When the nurse came in to change Iris’s IV drip, she would see this handsome young man watching over the bedside, silently observing the woman lying in the hospital bed.

The man held an aristocratic, beautiful, yet sharp countenance, his presence not inviting closeness, but rather evoking a respectful distance with its coldness.

As she changed the IV drip for the woman in the hospital bed, he leaned against the wall, arms crossed, his intense eyes unblinkingly fixed on her, instilling a sense of fear.

Yet, as she left and accidentally looked back, she saw the man bending slightly, carefully straightening the blanket for the woman lying in the bed.

His face was still the same, too beautiful to be approachable. But for some reason, the nurse suddenly felt he seemed quite amicable.

This was his tenderness towards the woman.

******************

Though Iris was asleep, she did not sleep peacefully.

Brandan noticed that if he sat by the bed, she would twist and turn, murmuring in her sleep.

But if he moved a bit farther away, Iris could calm down and sleep soundly.

This discovery left him rather disgruntled.

He deliberately sat by the bed, tightly gripping her hand, watching her slightly furrow her brow, biting her lip and rolling around like a wounded little animal.

"Brandan..."

She must be dreaming of him, right?

Calling his name.

"I’m scared..."

"..."

Brandan’s breath subtly paused, gaze fixed on her.

"Brandan... I’m scared..."

"Brandan..."

"I’m scared..."

Soft sounds echoed in the silent hospital room.

Brandan asked, "What are you afraid of?"

Afraid of me? Or something else?

Yet Iris did not respond.

She just kept calling his name and repeating her fear; he had no way of knowing her current dream, only watching as two tears slowly fell from her eyes, a pang of anguish rising in his heart.

Afraid of what?

Afraid of me?

If afraid of me, why still call my name?

Or perhaps, hoping I might protect you?

Brandan thought, I truly understand nothing, completely unable to comprehend her.

Iris Harris, what is she really thinking? He simply could not grasp.

***************

Iris dreamed a dream.

She dreamed of the last day she parted with Brandan.

Brandan’s small body was taken away on a stretcher, his hand gripping hers, those black eyes looking at her, telling her to wait for his return.

She suddenly began to cry.

So sorrowful, not knowing what to do.

Brandan, I’m scared.

I’m so frightened.

I’m afraid I won’t be able to wait for you to return.

I’m afraid I don’t have the strength to wait any longer...
