Chapter 96: Do Your Utmost
Chapter 96: Chapter 96: Do Your Utmost
"Junior sister, don’t be mad anymore. How about I make another run?" Qin Shanglin realized belatedly; how could he have forgotten that she was accustomed to a miss’s lifestyle, it’s even possible that she couldn’t get used to the food in the cafeteria.
"Finished eating? Once you’re done, help me with the data recording. Let her go on her own." Yun Yue finished the rice in her lunchbox, then tossed it into the trash can outside, passing by them with an icy, intimidating aura.
"Ah!" Qin Shanglin was stunned for a moment, only able to offer apologetically, "Junior sister, maybe you should go on your own after all. But there wasn’t much food left in the cafeteria just now, you might find there’s none left if you go."
Having said that, he threw away his own lunchbox, then put on his mask and hurried back to the computer to start entering data. He hadn’t expected that in just a short while, she had calculated so many sets of data. He inwardly marveled, adjusted his attitude, and got into work mode.
Xiao Yisha’s face turned blue with anger. He was bought over by her just like that within minutes?!
Nevertheless, when she took off her mask to eat earlier, she had caught a glimpse of Yun Yue’s profile, so delicately beautiful that it sparked jealousy in her.
Suppressing the anger inside, she reluctantly picked out the fatty bits and forced herself to eat half, clenching her teeth.
One by one, the experimental staff began to come in, and they each returned to their respective posts to start working.
"Yun Yue, Chairman Fei asked me to discuss with you regarding further experiments and to collaborate with you," said Dean Cao, who despite being over seventy, approached with steady steps, his glasses giving off a sense of meticulous rigor.
"Mhm, give me a moment. This experiment will be ready soon, tomorrow at the earliest," she replied, working with a vessel in hand, her eyes serious and bloodshot.
"Tomorrow?" Cao Weiyu blinked in surprise; he thought it would take at least two months, but she could finish by tomorrow?!
Xiao Yisha let out a sneer, thinking Yun Yue was too arrogant and overconfident. "Ridiculous, you can’t lose touch with reality when boasting. You expect to finish this experiment in just one day? Do you think it’s as easy as waiting for bread to rise?!"
Yun Yue kept her head down, ignoring her, and said to Cao Weiyu, "Yeah, there’s an experiment that indeed needs your help. Are you available?"
"Yes, tell me," Cao Weiyu said, momentarily stunned, as he responded instinctively. After speaking, he was somewhat surprised at himself, as if a young girl was leading him by the nose.
At first, when Fei Canqing wanted him to find Yun Yue for collaboration, he had his doubts. But having just seen her calculating data, which was the replication rate of the virus, and she did it mentally?!
Impressive.
To mentally calculate such a large set of data was no doubt a mark of a genius. The few he knew of were all key figures fostered by Jing University.
But in his memory, there had never been someone named Yun Yue at Jing University from previous years.
Yun Yue explained the key points concisely, and Cao Weiyu understood almost immediately, which made him take a second look at her. Her ideas were unique and innovative. Although untried, they were undeniably a good approach.
He nodded earnestly, "Alright, I’ll get to researching it right away."
"Is the data recorded yet?" she asked Qin Shanglin, who was working diligently beside her, a frown creasing her brow.
"It’s done."
Yun Yue made space for him, then sat back in front of the computer to start typing, "Then you do this experiment. Everything that needs to be observed is written on the paper. Just come to a conclusion."
"Okay." Qin Shanglin nodded, his eyes simple and honest.
Yun Yue was very satisfied with his work style—obedient and not long-winded.
She created a virus structure on the computer. The most urgent task now was to finish the virus gene sequencing as soon as possible, to study and produce a nucleic acid test reagent that could detect infected individuals at the fastest rate.
Fortunately, she had researched this type of virus before and had archived data; now it was just a matter of repeating the research, which would save a lot of trouble.
By daybreak, some could no longer endure and started leaving the lab to rest. Yet Yun Yue was still conducting experiments, with Qin Shanglin accompanying her.
The next morning, a surprised scream startled everyone in the lab.
"Success! We’ve done it!"
Qin Shanglin screamed as he had stayed up all night by Yun Yue’s side without sleeping. She had told him to rest, but he insisted on staying. Yun Yue had no choice but to let him help continue with the experiments.
Finally, they had completed the virus gene sequencing; now they could start developing the test reagents, at least taking the first step. He believed they would definitely be able to develop the medication.
Yun Yue rubbed her sore eyes, "Notify Fei Canqing that the test reagents can be produced."
"Okay, I’m on it!" Qin Shanglin happily ran out of the lab, God knows how excited he was at that moment. He believed they would definitely come up with the medication and help their country avoid this disaster.
Everyone in the lab widened their eyes. Had it really worked?
How did she do it?!
Xiao Yisha couldn’t help but widen her eyes. She was also working on virus gene sequencing, but even at the quickest, it would take a week. How could she have finished so quickly?!
She had already figured it out, so all of Xiao Yisha’s hard work and effort throughout the day were in vain!
Cao Weiyu was still conducting the next step of the experiment. He hadn’t expected the first step to be completed so quickly; he thought it would take at least a week.
This was undoubtedly a major breakthrough.
"Dean Cao, how are things on your side?"
"Just a bit more, come have a look."
He stepped aside, and after she checked, she furrowed her brows, "We still need to purify further. After amplification and identification, then we can draw conclusions, let’s wait a bit longer."
"Okay, you go rest for now, I’ll keep an eye on things. If you collapse, we can’t proceed with the experiments." Cao Weiyu’s gaze fell on her bloodshot eyes.
She and Qin Shanglin had stayed up all night to complete the virus gene sequencing.
After a day of working together, he seemed to understand why Fei Canqing treated her so courteously. Her abilities were not inferior to theirs, and in some respects, her insights were even superior.
Her thinking was meticulous, her actions methodical, and such a spirit of dedicated research was admirable.
He had previously underestimated her because of her young age, which was truly superficial of him.
"Okay, call for me if there are any issues." She was indeed tired, having gone without sleep for two consecutive nights, along with high-intensity brain activity—her eyes ached and welled up with tears as soon as she closed them, but her mind was extraordinarily alert.
Fei Canqing had previously taken her to her rest room, a small room of about twenty square meters with only a bed and a washroom. She hadn’t even taken off her protective suit before collapsing into bed and falling asleep.
She slept until seven in the evening, awakened by hunger. She took some chocolate out of her backpack that Wang Ning had given her; after eating a few pieces, the gnawing hunger subsided.
She walked to the cafeteria with a listless pace, passing through the hospital corridors and lobby. There was a cool detachment at the edge of her brow, her eyes showed no ripple as they swept over the group of helpless, panicked, and uneasy people.
People are afraid of dying; it’s all just fate.
She wouldn’t pity them, but she would do her utmost to develop a cure as quickly as possible.
Yet for those who died before she could develop the medicine, there was nothing she could do. At times in the face of natural disasters and calamities, humans were just that vulnerable.
