Chapter 95: Chapter 95: Grateful There’s Still Food to Eat
"Shanglin, Yisha, from now on, you two will be her assistants," he said. "Just do whatever she asks you to do."
Xiao Yisha and Qin Shanglin’s eyes widened, including everyone present who could hardly believe their ears.
The two of them were the youngest doctors in the Medical Organization and were considered authoritative experts even in the central hospital in Beijing.
Moreover, they were his direct disciples. To think they were asked to assist a woman who looked even younger than them?!
"Master, are you joking?" Xiao Yisha couldn’t believe it. She was the youngest authoritative expert in the Medical Organization, and now she was supposed to assist a nobody who seemed to have come from nowhere?!
"No joke. I have my reasons for doing this. If you’re unwilling, you can continue with your own tasks," Fei Canqing shook his head. His young disciple was too proud, and he had intended to provide her an opportunity.
Xiao Yisha’s expression softened slightly. "I have quite a lot on my plate already. Let my senior brother go instead. I can take over his tasks."
To ask her to assist Yun Yue would only lower her own stature.
She couldn’t be just ordered around by anyone who popped up.
Yun Yue raised her eyebrows. She felt there was something familiar about her voice, and now she remembered: wasn’t it Xiao Chen’s overly proud sister?
"Then Shanglin, you stay close to her and learn well," Fei Canqing said with a meaningful look, not forcing her further, knowing her performance might suffer if she worked reluctantly.
"Okay, Master," Qin Shanglin nodded somewhat dumbly. He was rather honest and straightforward, always following Fei Canqing’s instructions.
"Miss Yun."
Qin Shanglin hurried over to her.
"Just call me Yun Yue. Bring your laptop over. Save this report," said Yun Yue, continuing to observe the virus through the microscope.
Xiao Yisha scoffed. Only Qin Shanglin could be so obedient, following her around like a handyman, to be summoned at will. What could he possibly learn from that?
Although her own situation was precarious, if she could develop a resistance drug, she would be acclaimed as a major contributor. Her status in Beijing would then rise, perhaps even surpassing her mentor’s.
The more she thought about it, the more excited she became, beginning to research and experiment; she was determined to be the first to make a breakthrough.
Seeing that Yun Yue was engrossed, Fei Canqing left the lab, as he had other matters to attend to.
Yun Yue kept her eyes on the microscope, her right hand holding a pencil, sketching on paper, and recording the changes in the virus.
Qin Shanglin sat beside her, recording data and clearly seeing the virus sketches she made.
She sketched many different forms—was she documenting all the changes in the virus?!
Half an hour later, the virus died, and she stopped sketching.
This kind of virus would die within a few hours of leaving its host, especially in high temperatures, where it would die even quicker.
Having recorded the data, she then had Qin Shanglin input it into the records.
Time flew, and by noon, most people had gone to have lunch; such intense mental activities were particularly draining.
Only after eating well could one have the strength to continue working.
"Yun Yue, do you want to take a lunch break before continuing your research?" Qin Shanglin asked her, as since she entered the lab, she hadn’t sat down. In comparison, he had been sitting in front of the computer recording data, arguably the easiest job in the lab.
However, he was secretly amazed by the data and reports; not because of the beautiful handwriting, but because the data were far beyond normal computational ranges. She had calculated them verbally, down to the last detail.
The report summary was very thorough and crucial, hitting the mark almost immediately and proving to be extremely useful.
He began to understand why his master had asked both of them to assist her.
He felt somewhat sorry for Xiao Yisha, who had missed such a great learning opportunity.
"No need, you go ahead and eat, just bring me a portion," she said, her head lowered as she wrote the report.
"Alright, what do you want?" he began to save the file and then logged out.
"Anything," she said indifferently, hammering at the keyboard frantically after he left.
"Senior brother, get me a portion too, less meat more vegetables," Xiao Yisha smiled as she watched him preparing to leave, then turned her gaze towards the doorway, where her own figure was also not leaving.
What if someone stole their or her experimental reports while she was the only one in the laboratory? Wouldn’t their morning’s work have been in vain?
"Alright," Qin Shanglin nodded and then jogged out of the lab.
As soon as he stepped outside, he felt a wave of heat envelop his entire body, quickening his pace.
In the hospital corridors, the medical personnel, just like them wearing protective suits, some were so tired they just sat or even slept on the floor.
The hurried footsteps, the rolling of carts, the shouting of the medical staff, and the fearful and helpless voices of patients filled the entire hospital, as if the whole place, the entire Lan City, and even the whole country were on the brink of collapsing into a nation of death.
He ran to the lobby, which was already packed with citizens of Lan City, each looking panicked, their eyes lifeless, silent, desperate...
There was no resistance to the medicine, and if infected with this virus, eighty percent would have been declared dead, his eyes slightly moist, his vision gradually blurring.
He sped up desperately, unsure if he was racing against time or trying to escape the suffocating environment.
He ran to the cafeteria, grabbed three meals quickly, and ran back to the lab at top speed.
All three meals were the same; he distribute them to the two women and then found a corner to wolf down his portion.
Xiao Yisha opened her meal box, eyes widening, her complexion not very good, "Senior brother, didn’t I ask you to get less meat, why is it all meat?"
Qin Shanglin stuffed a mouthful of food and swallowed it without chewing, choking slightly and then catching his breath, "Forgot to tell the aunt, just manage with it, eating meat will help you replenish your energy better."
Yun Yue opened her meal box and was stunned, apparently not expecting it to be all meat, the meat was a bit fatty, not comparable to the braised pork in First Middle School’s cafeteria. Suppressing the disgust in her stomach, she frowned and swallowed it.
Just as Qin Shanglin had said, eating meat was indeed better for replenishing energy.
She also ate rapidly, without chewing, afraid that if she chewed, she might spit it out.
"But this meat..." Xiao Yisha frowned, the meat was half fat, how much would she gain from eating it?
"If you don’t eat it, you can dump it and get your own meal; you should be grateful to have something to eat." Yun Yue looked at her coldly, her voice hoarse from not speaking for too long, yet it carried a defiant tone.
"I didn’t say I wouldn’t eat!" Xiao Yisha slammed her chopsticks on the lid of the meal box, her brows furrowed with anger, what kind of tone was that?!
She shouldn’t think, just because their master was kind and pleasant to her, that she could act presumptuously and overstepping her bounds.
This was the Medical Organization’s lab, and everyone here was from the Medical Organization. It turned out the temper of a doctor emerging from some nondescript small hospital was quite large!
