Chapter 92: The requirements of quest
Forsyx said to them, "Ok, ask me whatever question you want to ask."
The woman took the initiative and asked, "Sir, the first thing is, what kind of quest do you want to do?"
Forsyx asked her back, "What are the options?"
She pointed four fingers. "Sir, you have four basic options for the tasks. We also refer to them as the KIDS of the dark quest. Here, K stands for killing someone, I stands for information gathering, D stands for devaluing something or someone, and S stands for stealing stuff."
Forsyx raised his eyebrow, "KIDS?"
The woman nodded her head. "Yes. All the tasks, in one way or another, require you to do one or multiple of these basic things."
Forsyx adjusted his mask and asked, "Ok, I understand three of them, but what is devaluing? What do I even have to do for these tasks?"
This time, the boy answered, "Sir, you must have seen the different shops in the market. Most of the devaluing tasks are related to you creating a mess or drama in front of those shops to decrease their credibility."
The woman added, "There are also some tasks that require you to hurt someone’s reputation. Most of these tasks do require you to investigate your target a bit, then take action against them."
Forsyx frowned a bit.
He realized these tasks would need him to act in public, something he wanted to avoid.
As for the other three, he also chose to avoid killing for now.
That left him with stealing and information gathering.
He asked the agents, "So what about the information gathering? Can you give me a bit of an idea about what kind of task I could get here?"
The woman said to him, "Sir, there’s a variety of quests—ranging from investigating some organization to gathering information about different wild zones or monsters."
The boy added, "Sir, at this stage, the most you would get are the stalking quests."
Forsyx turned to him, "Stalking quests?"
The teen nodded. "Yeah, these are time-wise some of the easiest quests. Mostly, all you have to do is create reports of what the target does for their whole day or something like that."
Forsyx didn’t think much and nodded, "OK, I’ll do one of these stalking quests."
He knew that to get the better quests, he had to differentiate himself from the other few players.
As long as the task only needed him to gather information, he felt that both his Peplir Bird form and Green Hook Snake form would be the most suitable for these tasks.
Both agents nodded their heads as the boy asked, "Sir, what kind of reward are you after? Is it money, some items, or connections?"
Forsyx asked, "Can’t I have all three of them?"
The woman nodded to him. "You can have them, but then the difficulty of the task would increase. Still, it would be better to tell us your preference, sir."
Forsyx tilted his head, "Why?"
The boy explained to him, "Actually, sir, it’s more related to the task giver. Like, if you want a high reward, then it’s better to take desperate or urgent quests. These quests need to be finished in a much shorter time, but you’ll get a much better reward for it."
Forsyx rubbed his mask and asked, "What about the connection?"
The boy explained, "When I said connection, sir, I meant building your reputation. Like, for these stalking information-gathering quests, if you manage to do some really difficult ones, it would build your reputation in this field. Then the quest givers could directly request you to take their quests."
The woman also added, "There’s another side to these quests, sir. The thing is, as you complete these quests, the quest giver will be able to see your name. If you do a fabulous job, there’s a possibility the quest giver will ask for you next time."
Forsyx nodded in understanding and said, "In that case, let’s go with connection. I want to build my reputation fast."
Both agents nodded their heads, and then the woman asked, "Do you have any limitations for the quest, like avoiding certain factions or having a specific time limit?"
Forsyx thought for a moment and said, "I’d prefer to have a single-day or single-night stalking quest. The stalking time needs to be at most one entire day, nothing beyond 24 hours."
The boy asked, "Last question from me, sir. What kind of difficulty scale do you prefer to work with?"
Forsyx tilted his head, "Difficulty scale? Is it the difficulty of the task?"
The boy shook his head, "No, sir, it’s not about the task difficulty, but more about the type of people you have to work around. The easiest level is those from the slums, then mid-level, core, and finally the top six noble houses. Since you can only get five tasks, it would be better to be precise."
Forsyx didn’t think much. "Well, anything is fine. Just focus on those tasks that help me build my reputation faster."
Both agents looked at each other, and the woman asked to confirm, "Are you sure about the two quest tasks, sir?"
Forsyx nodded his head. "Yup."
She pointed to the paper in his hand. "Sir, you have to give us your name token."
Forsyx gave it to them.
Both of them bowed to him and said, "Sir, you have to wait for some time as we are going to select the best possible quest for you."
With that, both of them walked to the door.
As the woman walked out, he saw the teen pause and look back at him.
The guy just stood there and stared at him up and down for a couple of seconds, then walked out like nothing happened.
It was a bit weird, but Forsyx didn’t care. All he wanted was a good quest for himself.
Forsyx understood one thing: this way of assigning agents actually placed much power in the Prohibited Hall’s hands.
This way, those behind the Prohibited Hall would be able to control what kind of task they assigned to different people.
He had to sit there for almost 20 minutes before both agents walked in, each holding two papers in their hands.
Without saying a word, they just placed all four quests on the table and stepped back.
Forsyx picked up the first quest. It required him to follow a merchant for an entire day. However, the name and description of the merchant were not visible.
At this, the woman said to him, "Sir, once you pick the quest, you will get extra details."
Forsyx nodded his head and focused on the reward. This one had a conditional extra reward.
The basic reward was just 2 silver coins, but the bonus could raise it to 10 silver coins. However, for that, he needed to find the merchant’s affairs partner.
The woman said to him, "Sir, this is a straightforward quest to complete. And you see the special symbol at the bottom edge?"
Forsyx focused on the weird black rose symbol surrounded by thick thorns.
He asked, "What is this symbol?"
The woman said with a puffed chest, "Sir, that symbol actually belongs to a regular customer who issues similar types of quests. So if you manage to achieve the extra condition, there’s a big possibility they’ll ask for you again."
Forsyx raised his eyebrow as he started to understand how this connection-building system worked.
From the task description, it looked like the merchant’s wife issued the quest, and this black rose must be the channel they used to issue the task.
It was likely some faction of rich ladies.
It was a good, interesting quest with a high chance of repetition, as there would always be people who want to investigate their partners.
The only problem was that this wasn’t something he was looking for.
He placed down the first quest paper and picked up the second one.
He saw the woman frowning at this, but ignoring the agents, he focused on the second task.
This one required him to stalk a blacksmith for the entire night.
The reward was 5 gold, with no extra conditions.
The woman once again said, "Sir, this is a staple stalking task. Easy to do and from the Black Flag. Their tasks mostly involve backdoor trades between noble families."
Forsyx, reread the quest. This one was a much better task to start with.
It wasn’t perfect, but it was a good one to get himself involved with the shady dealings going on in the city. He placed it to the side for now and focused on the third task.
Interestingly, right at the top corner of the third quest, there was a big red skull drawn on it.
He looked down and saw another symbol at the bottom, like the first two quests.
So the skull was not some faction mark. He pointed to the skull and asked, "Hey, what is this red skull at the top?"
The moment he said that, he saw the woman widen her eyes while the boy had a wide smile on his face.
She looked at the teen and shouted, "How could you suggest a red quest to a first-timer?"
The boy just shrugged his shoulders. "I picked what Sir asked for."
She screamed back at him, "Don’t you know the consequences of this? Don’t tell me you were after this from the start."
Forsyx raised his eyebrow and asked, "After what? Care to tell me what’s going on here?"
The woman bowed to him and began explaining to him the consequences of the red quest.
