Chapter 83: The 5 evolution method
The blob continued to pick a few types of cards each time and let the others deteriorate with time.
It didn’t take long before the blob picked out six rat cards.
The first was a plain card, while the other five had different colored lines on them.
Right before his eyes, all six cards merged into a super white card with the same brightness as the first card, but with five different colored lines on it.
This was the mechanic to create the super card that got the stat changes of the first card and the skills of the other five cards.
[You can combine six of these cards to create a super version of that Template Card.]
That was just the beginning.
As more time passed, he saw the blob, picking out different cards with colored lines and combining them into different super cards. Then it picked out the best Super Template Card while letting the others deteriorate.
Then, at the very center, a gray population of rats emerged.
When the blob used them to create a template, something new happened.
This time, the border around the card changed from white to black. This black-bordered card could not merge with the white-bordered cards.
Forsyx smiled as it hit him that these grey rats were new variants of the rat species.
[Natural evolution may take time, but it requires the least effort.]
Forsyx nodded his head.
He had just seen that all the white blob did was leave the rats undisturbed.
Now he could see that two different subspecies of rats were thriving inside this small forest: the white rats with different physical traits on one side, and the grey rats on the other.
[The only thing you need for natural evolution is to provide a stable environment and time.]
The next moment, he found himself back in time, right at the moment when the white blob had just built the other terrains.
[The second branch of Evolution is Adaptation. The one that requires a massive price but yields faster and more efficient results.]
This time, only the first forest blurred, as all he saw were the other empty terrains.
The white blob just picked out batches of 100 white rats and dropped them into different environments.
What followed next was nothing short of a massacre, as most of the rats just couldn’t survive the sudden changes in their environment.
Those on the mountains just froze to death, while those in the desert simply died of starvation.
It was extremely inhumane.
Forsyx remembered that this scene had left a big impact on him in his past life, but this time, he found it much tamer. He had already seen and done much worse.
Whenever these rats landed in a new environment, they wasted their energy screaming and running.
Not caring about any of that, the white blob continued placing the rats into these environments.
It took the deaths of around 1,000 pulse rats before a change started to happen.
On the mountains, the 11th batch had a few rats who started digging a big hole together.
Eventually, a dozen of them survived.
This number increased with each batch, and soon, a decent number of rats survived on the mountain.
They started eating the hard pine trees and more. With time, he noticed a few of the rats developing thick hair, wide paws, long tails, and so on.
This time, the white blob took a dozen of these white rats to the lab. Interestingly, all the templates started to have different shades of blue lines.
All of this had confused him in the past, but now he knew—it just showed these rats had started developing similar types of skills to survive in the cold.
Fifteen or sixteen batches later, the same sequence started happening in the desert conditions. This time, the template cards started having brown lines.
But Forsyx noticed that the white blob discarded all these cards, and he saw the reason with his own eyes.
Even though these rats had started to survive, they were still too fragile and lived only for a few days. It was likely they had only developed the bare minimum of survival skills.
Not caring about any losses, the white blob started emptying the small forest, just sending the rats to different terrains.
Forsyx noticed that just when only a few groups of rats were left in the small forest, the white blob stopped transferring them.
Time continued to pass as the total number of rats decreased drastically, but the rats on the other terrains also started adjusting.
On one mountain, the rats started reproducing at a much faster pace, while in the desert, the fertility rate went down a bit, but each individual rat started to become more resilient.
It didn’t take long before both these terrains got their second variant of rat species.
[Adaptation is much faster than natural evolution, but keep in mind the price of using this method is much higher.]
Forsyx just nodded his head.
While natural evolution was all about leaving everything to time, in adaptation, you forcefully change the environment in the hope that creatures would adapt.
He knew what the white blob did was very basic, and there was a big risk of what if the rats failed to adapt? Then all those resources would have been wasted for nothing.
At this moment, once again, fog appeared all around the lab—except for this small grass garden just next to it.
[The third branch of evolution is combination. This is the method of interbreeding different variants or subspecies.]
This time, he saw the white blob floating toward the grass garden with five different varieties of rats.
It just left those rats in the grassland.
What followed was rat interbreeding with each other.
Most of it was unsuccessful. A few times, even when the rats gave birth, it was mostly unstable babies that died a few moments after birth.
Though a few lucky ones survived, they were born into either of their parents’ variants.
Some new colorful rats started to appear in the grassland.
[The method of combination is simple but requires prior preparation.]
Forsyx once again shook his head—this one was also very rudimentary.
While the first three evolution methods were simpler, the last two required lab operations and individual creature modifications.
They were the most expensive of all, but offered the most absurd kind of evolution. Especially the last one.
