Chapter 76: The way of killer

After the satisfying breakfast, Veyne walked back to his room.

He had been out of the game for almost 14 hours. Wasting no more time, he lay on his bed and placed the headset on his head.

As he tapped the power button on the top of the headset, the familiar green light scanned his eyes, and in the next moment, the user messages appeared before him.

[Welcome to the world of Apex Ascension.]

Everything started to become dark around him, like all his senses were going numb one by one.

Soon, everything around him blacked out.

The next second, a bright light hit his face. He was back before his template lab.

Ding!

[The lab is shifting out of the ideal time.]

Not long after, Weyril teleported next to him and bowed. "Good to see you, boss."

Forsyx smiled at him and asked, "So what is the lab’s current status?"

Weyril just stared at him and said with a mix of dissatisfaction and hope, "Boss, the rabbits have already given birth to three or four litters. They’re already around three times their initial number. Can’t you allow me to just take one of them?"

Forsyx raised his eyebrow. "Oh, you followed my order."

Weyril stared at him. "Boss, don’t tell me you lied to me?"

Forsyx just smirked. "No, I just thought you were a mindless addict."

He looked into Weyril’s eyes. "You know, Weyril, there are two types of killers. First are those who are addicted to killing. These people let killing control them—they’re just mindless slaves who can’t live without killing creatures."

As he said that, Forsyx noticed Weyril shaking. It was like the guy was trying his best to control his urges.

Weyril looked into his eyes and asked, "What about the second type?"

Forsyx just looked up and pointed two fingers. "The second type is those who gained control over killing. These are the people who can live a normal life without killing a single creature, but..."

At this, he looked back into Weyril’s eyes.

Weyril gulped and asked, "But what, boss?"

Forsyx swiped a finger across Weyril’s neck. "But when they kill, they can kill hundreds-no, thousands of creatures—without even blinking once. Weyril, can you imagine a scene where someone is calmly cutting off thousands of heads and building mountains out of them?"

Weyril frowned at him. "What’s the point of killing like that? Don’t they want to torture the creature, hear their screams? Don’t they want to cut the creature slowly, piece by piece?"

Forsyx ignored those disturbing words and asked with a smile, "Weyril, can you imagine a person standing on top of a corpse mountain, looking down at the world itself?"

"Looking down at the fools who are busy torturing their opponents while rolling in the blood river flowing out of the corpse mountain. Do you think both are the same?"

Weyril started shivering and asked, "Boss, is the one who sits on top the master who controls the killing?"

Forsyx started laughing, "Haha. Do you think if I killed thousands of rabbits and created a mountain out of them, I would become the master of killing?"

Weyril asked in frustration, "Then who is the master of killing?"

Forsyx turned around and waved his hand. "Why so hasty? Didn’t I already answer your first question?"

Weyril tilted his head. "What question?"

Forsyx just opened his lab interface and said, without even looking at Weyril, "Well, you were asking whether there was more to killing, right?"

Weyril nodded. "Yeah."

Forsyx said in a calm tone, "Didn’t I give you the example of two fools who were addicted to killing in two different ways?"

Weyril just stared at him, mouth wide open. It took him a few moments before he stopped shaking and looked at Forsyx with stars in his eyes. "You are right, boss. Sorry, I doubted you earlier."

Forsyx waved his hand. "Oh, don’t worry. As you are my assistant, I’ll forgive you. But you have to make it up by working hard."

Weyril bowed to him. "Thank you, boss. I will always follow your orders."

At that moment, a notification popped up in front of Forsyx.

Ding!

[The lab assistant synchronization increased by 20 percent.

Current assistant synchronization: 50%.]

A smile formed on Forsyx’s face as he saw Weyril mumbling about how he had to not get influenced by killing.

’Damn, that really worked.’

To be honest, much of what he said was bullshit that he built around the famous life story of a legendary assassin from the past.

It was one of the most well-known lore stories that many assassin players used to follow.

Mainly, the lore was a mental journey guide that explained the transformation of the assassin, from being afraid to kill, to being repulsed by it, to starting to enjoy it, and finally becoming numb.

It became so popular in his past life because almost 90 percent of the player base had to kill monsters.

It was much easier with beast monsters, but many struggled when facing humanoid monsters.

And killing small groups of monsters and committing a massacre were two different things. Stuff like massacres was the thing that mentally scarred many players.

Later on in the game, many players started following meditation, therapy, and other mental health practices.

Though the most effective method many agreed on was finding an in-game mentor or method.

This life story was one such thing, as it was full of riddles.

Many pro players came up with different but similar interpretations.

What he told Weyril was based on that lore, though in Weyril’s case, it had the opposite effect of making him earn mastery over killing itself.

Well, that part was bullshit Forsyx had built around his own past life experience. He wanted to kill everyone back then, but was helpless to do anything and had to control himself.

This "mastery over killing" was born from the situation of helplessness, where no matter how much you want something, you cannot let it control your actions.

So, it was the kind of combination of both the past lore and his own life story.

Of course, there was a risk of going too far, then Weyril would just become a time bomb. Which, when detonated, would kill everything around him.

But it was much better than doing nothing. After all, if he left Weyril as it then this guy would start going for the top monster in no time.

He was ready to take that much risk of having a stable lab assistant beside him.

As long as it worked, he was happy.

Not disturbing Weyril, he focused back on the lab interface.
