Chapter 71: Standing for himself

Veyne sighed when he looked at her. He then glanced at his family.

From their reactions, it was clear that, except for maybe Kavya, all of them already knew about the recent development.

Before his father reached them, Cathrine just looked at him and then started shedding tears.

This shocked many as they got up from their seats, while Veyne just sat, not reacting to any of the drama.

When Cathrine’s three brothers saw their sister crying, two of them tried to calm her while her eldest brother rushed toward him.

The guy just grabbed his collar and shouted, "You bastard, how could you do that?"

Even Cathrine’s father shouted, "Veyne, I always treated you like my son, and this is how you repay me?"

Veyne’s father said from the side, "Calm down, pal. Veyne just made a mistake on impulse. There’s no truth to it."

Even his brother said with fake concern, "Uncle, Brother Veyne was just under pressure because of his guild’s failure. He was just saying things out of stress."

At this, the youngest uncle stood up. "What? Veyne’s guild closed down?"

His big Aunt Corini practically demanded an answer. "Veyne, is it true your guild closed down?"

That was just the start, as one after another, others started demanding answers.

Veyne didn’t even have to speak much, as his brothers spilled all the beans about his guild closing up.

How Veyne had stolen from others, and how his guild members started harassing Cathrine over it.

Even while sobbing, Cathrine also narrated her side of the story.

She kept sobbing as she said, "I don’t know why Veyni is angry with me... baa... mmm, I’m sorry, Veyni. Please, just give me one more chance. Just don’t break up with me."

Kavya jumped at this. "What! Brother Veyne, how could you break up with Sister Cathrine?"

Even his mother said from the side, "Veyni, I know you must regret making such a mistake. Why don’t you apologize to Cathrine?"

Sera made a snide remark. "Hmm, how could you place the blame for your incompetence on others? This must be why your guild failed."

Aaron, the second child of Big Uncle and one of Roonie’s drinking buddies, tried to dissuade the situation. "Sister, don’t just blame Veyne. He must have his reasons, right?"

Aaron looked at him as if queuing him to speak, but his fourth and youngest uncle beat him to it.

One after another, they shook their heads, telling him how immaturely he had handled the situation.

The adults weren’t the only ones, as even the twin teens spoke up.

"Big brother, you shouldn’t make a girl cry."

"Yeah, you should apologize to Big Sister."

Veyne just looked around at everyone at the table.

Just a moment ago, they were all ready to send their kids to him, wanting his help.

But now, either they were telling him to apologize or just quietly enjoying the drama.

Even the kids were lecturing him about how he was wrong?

It hit me that he was wrong all along. Before coming to this meeting, he had this misconception that things only got bad because of his ultimate failure inside the game.

But was he wrong? There was hardly anyone in this family standing by him.

As he looked at the scene, another memory kept playing in the back of his mind.

The time the family learned the truth about Sera’s guild.

Everyone knew it was Sera’s fault; despite that, half of the family chose to support her.

A sharp contrast to the current situation, where he hadn’t even harmed anyone in the family, yet all of them were against him.

He was at a loss to see even his mother and sister, who were now next to Cathrine, helping her.

Even his father and brother were busy bad-mouthing him and trying to convince others he had made an impulsive mistake.

He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. ’When my own family is against me, what can I expect from others? I guess the problem is never money, but control.’

Everyone here wanted him to follow what they said.

He opened his eyes and then looked at Cathrine. He had been wrong about many things and many people, but this time he wouldn’t take it lying down.

He just pushed Cathrine’s brother’s hand off his collar.

Then he looked into her eyes and said in an extremely calm tone, "So, this is your method? To make a scene in front of my entire family?"

She shook her head. "No, I never wanted to do this. I tried so many ways to reach you, but you never replied to any of them."

Veyne started laughing. "Hahaha. Isn’t it funny—you always rely on someone else to contact me? You can tell others who my roommate is, but you can’t just walk to my room for a conversation. You want to ask the reason? Didn’t I already tell you that in very clear words?"

His father shouted at him, "Veyne! Is this how you talk to a woman? Where are your manners?"

He just looked at his father, then at Cathrine’s father, and said in a blunt tone, "The issue is always between Cathrine and me. Now,, don’t come here and act like you did something big for me. With how she needs all of you here, it’s clear why we are no longer in a relationship."

"You bastard! How dare you talk to my father like that!" Cathrine’s brother took a big swing at him.

Bam!

The punch sent him two steps back onto the table.

Cathrine shrieked from the back, "No, brother, stop!"

The guy turned back to look at Cathrine, but in that moment, Veyne got up, grabbed a nearby beer bottle, and smashed it right on top of the guy’s head.

Crunch!

The glass shattered right on the guy’s head as the women around started screaming.

Ahh!

Ahhh!

Veyne just pushed the guy, who dropped to the grass. Everyone could see a stream of blood flowing down the guy’s head.

Cathrine’s other two brothers were about to shout when they heard another glass-breaking sound.

Crunch!

This time, Veyne broke the corner of the beer bottle and pointed it toward Cathrine and her family. "Don’t mistake calmness for submission. I won’t tolerate abuse from anybody."

He said that last part while looking at his parents and siblings.

Silence settled over the party, as no one dared to speak a word.

A child whimpered. Someone dropped a fork. His mother’s lips parted, but no words came out. fɾeeweɓnѳveɭ.com

Cathrine’s second and third brothers rushed to help their eldest brother, all while staring daggers at him.

Not caring about anyone, Veyne just calmly wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth.
