Chapter 69: The family meeting

Then Roonie muttered, "If I join, Kiyon might not survive one month."

Veyne just smiled and said nothing. It’s not like Roonie would follow words anyway; he was happy to plant just the seed for now. He just had to wait and see if this seed would germinate or die.

Roonie asked, "Yeah, you were talking about the home arrangement, right? Do you have anything in mind?"

Before Veyne could answer, the car started beeping. Beep beep! [We are just a kilometer away from the destination.]

Veyne took a deep breath and checked the time on his phone. It was already 30 minutes past 9 p.m.

He looked at Roonie and said with a smile, "Just let me handle all the mess. You just enjoy the show."

Roonie raised his eyebrow but then waved his hand. "Don’t worry, I’m just here for some enjoyment."

Veyne nodded and closed his eyes. He stopped thinking about the game and other stuff. Only the memories of the past flashed through his mind.

Soon, another mechanical voice made him open his eyes. [We are at the destination.]

As he opened his eyes, he saw a mid-sized, two-floor stone house with a small 10-meter space between the boundary gate connected to the road and the building.

He saw multiple cars already parked in this space. He pointed to one of the empty spots. "Park this there."

Roonie switched to manual and easily parked the car in the cornermost space.

Both of them walked out, Veyne in a simple cream shirt and grey pants. On the other hand, Roonie was in a blue shirt and black pants.

A whole lot of things went through Veyne’s mind as he walked toward the door.

But the moment he stood before the door, something clicked in his head as he felt a sense of numbness washing over him. It was like his brain recognized there was no running from this situation.

He got that same feeling he’d felt during his meeting with Catherine—the feeling of looking at his life from a stranger’s lens.

He calmly pressed the bell. Ding Dong!!

Not long after, a girl in her teens opened the door.

She stared at him with those big, wide eyes and shouted, "How can you be so late, brother? You know Mom is fum—" The moment she noticed Roonie, she froze and stared at him with those wide eyes.

Roonie smiled at her and reached out for a handshake. "Hello there. I’m Roonie, good to meet you."

She reached out for the handshake while stammering, "Hell... go...d meet..."

Her long brown hair swayed in the air, trying to cover that healthy white face that was getting redder with each passing second.

Veyne looked at her standing there, clueless, shaking hands with Roonie.

At that moment, he heard a loud shout from inside. "Kavya, who is at the door?"

She turned in with a red face, likely embarrassed, and said, "Mom, it’s big brother and his friend."

Veyne just walked in himself as he saw his mom looking from the corner of the living room.

The moment she saw him, she got up and walked to the door while shouting, "Veyni, you have to explain to me why you’re so late!"

A woman in her late forties walked to them. She shared the same brown hair as Kavya, though hers was a bit thin and only reached her back.

Even at this stage of life, she looked as young as ever without a single wrinkle on her face.

Veyne walked up to her, gave her a hug, and said with a smile, "Good to see you, Mom."

She was about to shout more when she noticed Roonie.

Roonie just nodded to her. "Hello, ma’am."

She smiled at Roonie. "Hello," and glanced at Veyne. "This must be your college friend, right?"

Veyne nodded. "You could say that."

She was about to ask more when Veyne asked, "Is everyone already here?"

Kavya rolled her eyes from the side. "Brother, don’t you know some of those guys love to come last to the party?"

His mother also nodded. "Two of your uncles’ families still have to come, along with some of our neighbors." She turned around and led them across the house toward the back door. "Come, others at the party were asking for you."

The moment she opened the door, he saw the small garden filled with people drinking and talking to each other.

Most adults were gathered at the massive table in the center next to his grandfather, while the younger ones stood in different groups.

He even saw a barbecue grill in the corner with his dad and his big uncle busy there.

Most of the women were busy gossiping while also managing the small children.

At this moment, he heard a shout. "Oh brother, you’re here?"

He turned to the left and saw his brother, Kron, standing with half a dozen people—a mix of cousins and neighbors.

Veyne nodded to him and then walked toward the main table.

Kron just smiled at him and got back to talking with the others.

Veyne hugged his grandfather and greeted the others, including his father and uncles. He even introduced Roonie to everyone.

After the introductions, both of them picked up a couple of beer bottles and took a spot at the far end of the table.

They had just taken a few sips when Veyne saw another group of cousins, ones who used to be close to him, walk up to the table.

They started talking about random stuff, mostly complaining about dating and how expensive things were these days.

A couple of them even dragged Roonie into their complaints about money, and after his third bottle, Roonie jumped in with a smile.

Heck, it was so funny seeing the Cobra child, who might never have to buy common stuff, cursing the government.

He didn’t have to worry about Roonie, as the guy was having a blast.

During this moment, both of his uncles made their entrance. Both of them created their usual fuss before calming down as dinner finally started, with everyone gathering around the table.

Not long after, the usual topic started.

His youngest uncle began by praising him and Sera, the second daughter of his big uncle, as both of them were the only two who were doing well in the game.

Others weren’t far behind, and he heard a couple of friendly remarks from almost everyone.

Many even praised both his parents and his big uncle and aunt for their insight into allowing their children to play the game.

He didn’t know about Sera, but that was just not true in his case.

He played the game at his own risk and told them afterward. Well, that didn’t matter, as he didn’t care about those credits.

Not long after, Sera started first, talking about all the bullshit progress she had made.

Then, just like in the last life, she said, "Everyone, I have a big thing to announce. I want to take both Kavya and Lily under my Lotus Guild."

Silence formed at the table as everyone looked at his father and third uncle. Though the younger ones stared at him with expectation.

Veyne couldn’t help but sigh internally as Sera once again decided to pull this stunt.

A stunt that had almost broken the family in the last life.
