Chapter 61: The lab assistant
After the explosion, things moved as Forsyx predicted.
The news about the explosion spread quickly throughout the city.
A lot of city guards, along with a few NPC nobles, rushed to the scene.
Lorim followed his instructions and started acting out how Spink had attacked them.
The few others from Kiyon who remained outside joined her in the act.
With no survivors to speak for the dead, the Kiyon guild spun the truth into whatever shape they needed.
The Spink gathering in the guild office ended up working in favor of the Kiyon guild.
While the Kiyon guild members were decent at acting, everyone, from the other guilds to even the NPCs, knew that Kiyon was behind the attack.
What they didn’t understand was how Kiyon managed to blast the guild office from the inside.
The key point here was that all the guilds were responsible for everything that happened inside their own guild offices.
So, no matter who attacked whom, Spink was held liable for all the damage.
Not only did they have to pay for the destruction of a city building, but they also had to compensate the city and the Kiyon guild for each death that happened inside their office.
Lorim tried to push for more rewards and harsher punishments, but a bunch of NPC noble families came out in support of Spink for damage control.
While the city buzzed with news of the blast in the middle section, Forsyx walked into an empty, abandoned alley.
He didn’t want to give anyone any clue about his connection to the lab space.
After making sure no one was around, he closed his eyes and muttered, "Teleport to the lab."
After a few moments of silence, he saw the familiar notification pop up in front of him.
Ding!
[Teleportation in progress. Remain still for 30 seconds.]
He stood there, and as the timer hit zero, a bright light engulfed him.
Zap!
Forsyx opened his eyes inside the familiar Template Master’s office.
He looked around and saw that everything was almost the same as he remembered.
The same empty office with just a chair and a table at the center.
He didn’t find any snake eggs inside the guild office.
The upgrade mechanism must have transferred it to the safe room.
As he walked toward the table, he noticed the big, fist-sized assistant crystal on the side.
Even though the size of the crystal remained the same, the same couldn’t be said about its color.
The crystal was no longer purple.
It now had a swirl pattern of red and gray colors, with a crimson glow around it like an aura.
As Forsyx stared at the crystal, its description popped up in front of him.
Ding!
[Corrupted Assistance Crystal detected.
Description: Due to prolonged exposure to ancient power, the assistant crystal has mutated into a Corrupted Assistance Crystal. ]
Forsyx sighed. "Damn it."
He had avoided using the crystal earlier out of fear of its size, but now it had mutated and become corrupted.
What the hell did this corruption even do? Forsyx shook his head.
He didn’t dare wait any longer, afraid something worse would happen to it.
For the first time, he walked to the corner of the table. Up until now, he had avoided that spot, fearing he might touch the crystal.
As he picked up the crystal, it flared up with bright red light.
Ding!
[Assistant Crystal conditions met.]
[Awakening Sequence: Initializing Assistant Core.]
The light was so bright he had to close his eyes.
A moment later, the light started to disappear, and he saw the crystal burst into countless pieces.
All those pieces floated in the air and started moving around rapidly.
A few seconds later, they began combining into a small humanoid shape.
He felt relieved—at least he wouldn’t have to deal with a monster as his assistant.
Soon, the crystal pieces broke into fine powder and dropped to the floor.
Suddenly, a slick hand emerged from the pile of dust, then a second—and soon a slim creature appeared before him.
A slim teen boy, around 14 to 16, with bone-white hair, one eye pitch black, and the other bright green.
He had a lean, carved body that gave off a sickly patient vibe.
The boy reached up to Forsyx’s shoulder and wore an extra-long white coat with black pants.
A weird combination, with the oversized clothes giving the impression of a kid in adult clothing.
He looked like a doll stitched together by a god with a morbid sense of humor.
Even in such a funny sight, the sides of the boy’s coat caught Forsyx’s attention.
He noticed thin greenish strands stitching the clothes together.
At first, he didn’t think much of it—until he saw them pulsating.
It hit him: those weren’t threads.
They were veins.
Live veins, with blood constantly flowing through them.
The teen bowed to him with a wide smile on his face. "Good to see you, Master. Hope you’ll be fun to serve."
Even though his words were casual, the kid spoke in a highly refined manner. More refined than any noble Forsyx had met in the game.
Forsyx raised an eyebrow.
Something was off. Everything felt too perfect. So he asked bluntly, "Whose veins did you use to create your clothes?"
The boy stared at him for a moment. Then a wide grin formed on his face. "You have very keen eyes, Master. As for these veins, I don’t have any memories of them. My consciousness is a patchwork of the Lab."
"Wait, you know that?" Forsyx couldn’t help but ask.
The boy shrugged. "Why do you have a problem with that, Master?"
Forsyx rubbed his forehead.
Everything this guy said was true.
Lab assistants were unique creations of the lab.
Forsyx didn’t know the full details. All he knew was that the lab used a bunch of old creature personas and combined them to create suitable assistants for him.
The Lab gave them foggy memories to build their personalities.
But in his past life, his assistant had no awareness of that.
He wasn’t sure if this awareness came from using a powerful assistant crystal—or if it was because of the corruption.
Either way, he liked the acceptance of the truth this guy showed.
He remembered in his past life, when he revealed this truth to his lab assistant, she had a meltdown.
He liked this no-nonsense attitude much more than clueless sobbing.
He extended his hand. "I am Forsyx, the master of this lab. You can call me by name—or boss."
The teen looked at his hand and extended his own for a handshake. "I am Weyril. Good to see you, Boss Forsyx."
The moment they shook hands, the lab trembled slightly as a couple of notifications popped up in front of Forsyx.
