Chapter 50: Power of nightmare
The moment the four of them rushed behind that black nightmare, things started to change for them.
Many times, the other two and he tried to convince Morki, but the guy kept repeating something about a big quest he had received.
Interestingly, no one else had received the quest—still, they trusted Morki. After all, this guy knew the most among the four of them.
They tried their best to chase after the black wolf, but it was just too fast.
Not only were they unable to get anywhere close to the beast, but now a new group of dogs and wolves started to run after them.
Before they could rethink their decision, Plasky fell to the ground.
Before the three could do anything, two wolves jumped on Plasky and bit his leg.
Plasky screamed in pain, and before they could react, one of the wolves clutched Plasky’s neck, leading to his death.
They just ran, shocked and panicked.
At first, all of them thought it was nothing more than a simple death in the game, and that Plasky was screaming for dramatic effect.
But the truth was far crueler than that, and it didn’t take long for them to realize it.
Just a few minutes later, two small foxes jumped on Xari.
Just like Plasky, instead of fighting, Xari just started screaming and rolling in pain.
This time, he rushed to help Xari, but at that moment, one of the foxes jumped from Xari and bit his hand.
He just froze in shock.
He knew the game let you feel pain, but this... He couldn’t control himself, and a tear formed in his eye as he violently shook his hand.
By chance, he managed to smash the fox on the ground.
"Ahhhh!... Help... pls..."
He heard Xari’s loud cries for help, but not daring to waste any time, he just ran.
He ran with all his strength while constantly wiping his tears.
This wasn’t what he had joined the game for.
Tears kept falling from his eyes, and he could still feel the pain in his hand.
It was much worse than anything he had ever felt. Much worse than the time he accidentally fell on his hand and it swelled for a few days.
That single moment changed the image of Apex Ascension from a cool, fun game to a horror game.
A horror game that inflicted actual pain.
Somehow, he tumbled and smashed into a massive tree.
He was about to scream when he remembered the pain from biting.
Not daring to make a sound, he just dragged himself to the other side of the tree.
He clenched his jaw and crouched into a ball, not daring to even breathe loudly.
But he could hear hundreds of growling sounds. He thought it was only a matter of time before they found him, but for some reason, even after a long time, he felt no pain.
Even his injuries healed automatically, like nothing had ever happened.
But the pain remained etched in his mind.
He gathered the courage to look around, but saw no creatures near him.
Then he noticed a huge chunk of them gathered in one place. He heard a lot of screaming, but this time, they were monster screams.
Unable to contain his curiosity, he started climbing the tree.
No matter how curious Boosky was, he would not dare move close to them.
As he reached the top of a branch, the first thing he noticed was that same dark wolf standing in the center of the canines.
But then he just stared, wide-eyed and open-mouthed. He couldn’t believe the carnage unfolding before him.
One moment, the wolf stood in the center; the next, it appeared elsewhere, brutally ripping the head of a hound from its body.
Blood splattered all around, but it was as if no one cared.
Other canines jumped at the wolf, only for it to emerge again in another place, taking a few more lives in the process.
It was like death itself had come down in the form of that dark wolf.
He saw several holes randomly popping up in the ground that were otherwise crowded with canines.
Before he could fully process everything, he saw ten players jump on the dark wolf.
There, he saw Morki at the front of the group.
He watched, eyes wide, as the dark wolf suddenly appeared next to Morki and, in the next moment, bit a chunk out of Morki’s neck.
He saw Morki flailing his arms, eyes filled with tears, screaming so loudly that it reached up to where he was standing.
The next moment, dozens of other canines jumped on top of Morki, showing no mercy as they began tearing his body into pieces.
All the while, Morki continued to scream.
...
Boosky came to his senses as he glanced at his hand, where the fox had bitten him, then remembered Morki’s shrill screams.
Those screams still echoed in his mind, sending chills down his spine as he stared at the dark wolf.
Many things had changed in the last half hour. It all started when those two foxes appeared on the battlefield.
They were almost three times the size of the black wolf, and unlike the other mindless dogs he had seen, they attacked the black wolf in a coordinated manner.
Especially that grey fox.
He wasn’t sure why those two foxes were so big, but they had to be some kind of special beasts.
After those two appeared, the battle changed from one-sided carnage to the black wolf jumping around, dodging both big foxes and the other canines that still jumped on him from time to time.
He was confused about why they were killing one of their own, but he thought it would be the end of the black wolf. No matter how special it was, it couldn’t take on all of them, right?
Boosky sighed and gulped as he remembered those super-fast flashes.
Even with those two foxes together, they weren’t able to contain the black wolf.
All he remembered from that fight were black spots littering the land with canine corpses.
But then, as he watched, one of the smaller wolves leapt and tore into the black beast’s side. Blood gushed out from its body like any ordinary monster.
Boosky froze.
Even this nightmare could bleed like others.
