Chapter 46: Second shift to monster body
Chapter 46: Second shift to monster body
He watched as veins all over his body shrank and turned black.
It was bizarre as his wolf’s body began to change shape again.
This time, instead of getting bigger, he began to shrink.
But the difference was... he could feel that all those extra muscles and bones were still there.
They were just compacting. It was like someone was compressing him from the outside in.
He felt denser than before.
Even his grey hide shifted once more, this time becoming darker than night, covered in a vibrant, extra-dark coat.
All four of his palms widened, while two upper canines grew out from both sides of his mouth.
Ding!
[Due to the blood purification by the Crimson Core, the elder Dire Wolf develops hidden power and transforms into an ancient variant: Night Wolf, the Monarch of Darkness.]
[New species trait detected!
Species Trait: Shadow Assimilation.
(Note: Stat boosts from the Ancient Mark remain.)
]
The moment he heard those notifications, he looked up.
Suddenly, the clouds above him started to disappear, one after another.
But instead of bright sunlight, all he saw was a massive red moon bathing the entire forest and its surroundings in its cool, bright red light.
It was like even the sun dared not show its face in his presence. Not able to control himself, he howled.
Awwwwwwwwooo!
The howl of the forgotten beast echoed once again in the world of Apex.
After composing himself, Forsyx just stared at the special trait with his mouth wide open.
[Shadow Assimilation:
Description: The silent beast of shadow, the name given to the Night Dire Wolf. Enables the beast to jump freely into nearby shadows.
Effect: Once in shadow, you become ethereal. Physical damage becomes ineffective.
Limit: 1 second.
Note: You can only stay inside the shadow for 1 second. After that, the land of shadows will expel you.
]
This new trait was much better than the first moonless trait.
Heck, it could rival those super-powerful, broken traits of a Calamity monster.
In Apex Ascension, Calamity Monsters were the title given to monsters capable of breaking game logic.
It was the same with his Shadow Assimilation—a superpower trait that provided him with 100% immunity to physical attacks.
There was a limit of 1 second on the stay, but there was no limit on the jump, which made it broken in every sense.
At this moment, he looked up at the sky. He could sense that something big was about to happen.
It was just... everything around him suddenly became quiet.
Too quiet, so quiet that he felt like he wasn’t even standing inside a forest anymore.
This Night variant of the Dire Wolf was in no way normal.
Before he could think more about it, another barrage of notifications popped up in front of him.
Ding!
[The Monarch of Wings senses your presence. She is intrigued and has offered to take you under her.]
Ding!
[Special Offer from the Monarch:
The local Monarch is interested in you. She offers the position of third-level servant for her grandchild. You will be under the direct command of the Royal Beast Family.
Please select: (yes/no)
Note: Once you accept the contract, you will lose control over your life and must follow the commands of your master.]
Forsyx just stared at the offer with wide eyes. Who the hell was this Wing Monarch?
In Apex Ascension, every kingdom had two royal families: the humanoid NPCs who controlled the kingdom from the front, and the monster species that ruled over the other beasts present in that kingdom.
It was that kind of super-complicated dynamic between the NPCs and the monsters.
It was connected to the lore of the game, but he hadn’t had the luxury in his past life to fully understand what was going on between each of these factions.
The only thing he understood was that this Wing Monarch was probably the leader of the current royal monster species.
But with how weak the Rowali Kingdom was, it was likely she wasn’t that strong compared to the surrounding monarchs.
Heck, with the Purge coming, he wasn’t even sure if she would survive herself. And that creature was asking him to become a servant? And not just any servant—a third-level servant?
Fck, these monsters were delusional as hell.
Wait... now that he thought about it, most royal species had a set of loyal servants extending to the fifth generation.
He just stared at the contract, not knowing whether to laugh or cry.
No matter what the case was, these guys weren’t something that his current self could mess with.
But it’s not like he could accept this offer either.
It would be nothing but a death sentence for him.
It was like being dropped on the edge of a thin cliff, where any step forward or backward led to doom.
He waited for a few seconds, hoping the deal would disappear... but the next second, another message popped up in front of him.
Ding!
[The Wing Monarch is staring at you, waiting for your response.
20 seconds left to make a choice. If no selection is made, the default choice of ’yes’ will be selected.]
"Fck," Forsyx cursed under his breath, and said, "No."
Silence.
Everything became silent again, as if what he had just seen was nothing but an illusion.
The wind picked up pace, and the ground beneath his feet began to shake.
The once-silent forest came back to life—but this time, filled with the screams of monsters.
The wind picked up again, and in the next second, he saw the massive reddish moon shatter.
The bright light returned and lit up the forest once more.
Then he heard it. A loud, low-pitched scream.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!
-90.
Forsyx collapsed to the ground, blood pouring from both ears.
It felt like someone had stabbed a hot needle straight through his skull.
Ding!
[Warning!!
The Wing Monarch has shown open hostility toward you and issued a kingdom-wide hunt command to all monsters.]
Ding!
[The Command of the Monarch: All monsters in the beginner area have entered a berserk state, seeking to wipe your existence from this world. Everyone involved in your hunt will earn the Wing Monarch’s goodwill.]
In the next moment, Forsyx felt vibrations in the air, and then he heard hundreds... no, more than a thousand beasts across the forest screaming.
And then he sensed all of them charging toward him.
’Fck, how it changed from the player event to monster event.’
