Chapter 36: Couldn’t Win the Argument, Trembling with Anger and Cold
Chapter 36: Chapter 36: Couldn’t Win the Argument, Trembling with Anger and Cold
Thinking about how this was the newly installed door, and to avoid getting trapped inside the house again, she hesitated for half a second before unlocking it.
Forget it. Que Zelian had already kicked down two doors, both indoors and out.
As a door, what an innocent fate to suffer.
She decided to spare the door some mercy.
In the bathroom, Xiao Jinsheng let the warm water slide over her fingertips. Looking at herself in the mirror, she reached up and pulled at her pale cheeks.
Her heart couldn’t help but marvel. Even if she’d transmigrated into a novel, the fact that the face was identical to her own was nothing short of miraculous.
Aside from the appearance, this weak, frail constitution also mirrored her former life as a fragile university student.
As the steam rose and blurred the mirror, to the point where her reflection was no longer discernible, Xiao Jinsheng let out a deep sigh.
Just an hour ago, someone’s life had ended by her hand.
She could remember the fear and panic she’d felt at the time. It had been so brief—she ought to be afraid now, thinking back on it.
But Xiao Jinsheng found herself unsettlingly calm inside.
She thought, Que Zelian wasn’t wrong when he said it.
In a post-apocalyptic world like this, only the fittest survive.
And she, perhaps in her very bones, was suited for such a world.
Whether it was wholeheartedly accepting multiple Beast Husbands, killing Fog Corpses, or taking human lives.
At this moment, Xiao Jinsheng’s state of mind underwent a significant transformation.
Downstairs, Yu Yunxiao, heating up some milk, saw Que Zelian coming down as well and casually reminded him:
"Huaiqing and Su Ye drove to the marketplace. There isn’t much food left at home, and since Xiao Jinsheng has the Space ability, they figured they’d stock up, so there’s enough to eat when we eventually take missions to Mist West."
"Okay," Que Zelian responded, glancing through the window at the darkening sky. "It’s about to rain."
"Let’s hope it doesn’t get foggy again," Yu Yunxiao said worriedly.
He carried both the hot water and milk upstairs, mumbling to himself, "I better go keep watch. One moment of inattention and she might get abducted or attacked again."
Que Zelian: ...
After some thought, he had to admit Xiao Jinsheng’s unwitting tendency to attract trouble probably wasn’t unjustified. He followed him upstairs.
Meanwhile, at the marketplace, Huaiqing glanced at the shop across from it and said, "Here’s the shopping list. Let’s split up. I’ll head over to the shop across the way to buy some seasonings."
"Fine." Su Ye didn’t mind, locking the car before heading into the marketplace on his own.
About ten minutes later, just as Su Ye was loading up the fourth shopping cart, a massive explosion resounded outside the marketplace.
Everyone shopping inside was startled. They quickly ran to the windows to look outside.
"Where did the explosion come from?" a female voice asked, perplexed.
"That direction... it’s the Black Market," a Beastman said, pointing forward.
Sure enough, smoke was rising from the tallest building in the Black Market. The top floor had been reduced to ruins by the explosion, chunks of rubble falling to the ground below.
For a time, those nearby engaged in curious discussion.
Some speculated that Zombies had appeared in the Black Market; others suggested it might be a Mutant Beast escape causing the explosion.
Su Ye continued loading goods, unbothered by the chatter around him.
"I got the seasonings. You still have a few things left to grab?" Huaiqing joined Su Ye, pulling along an empty cart.
Su Ye glanced sideways at him. Meeting his questioning gaze, Huaiqing adjusted his glasses with a small smile. "You’ve already finished buying everything?"
"Add this, too." Su Ye grabbed a bottle of floral water from a nearby shelf, opened the cap, and sprayed it right onto Huaiqing.
Huaiqing stepped back, repelled by the sharp, cool scent. Su Ye capped the bottle again and tossed it into Huaiqing’s cart. "Keeps mosquitoes away, soothes itching, clears the mind."
As Su Ye pushed his cart past Huaiqing, he added in a low voice, "And... it masks the smell of gunpowder. Wouldn’t you agree?"
Huaiqing froze for a moment, raised his hand to sniff his fingertips. The faint scent of gunpowder was barely detectable.
He chuckled but didn’t explain, instead tossing a few more bottles of floral water into his cart.
As he passed Su Ye, he offhandedly asked, "Is a panther’s sense of smell always this sharp?"
"And is a sheep’s disguise always this perfect?" Su Ye returned the question.
Neither answered the other’s query.
As their car pulled out of the underground parking lot, the heavy clouds gathered above finally burst into rain.
By the time Mo Jiao returned to the villa, he was already soaked to the bone.
"Weren’t you going to buy saplings? Where are they?" Yu Yunxiao asked pointedly when he saw Mo Jiao return empty-handed.
Mo Jiao cast a cold glance at Yu Yunxiao, said nothing, and headed upstairs.
"Stop right there!" Yu Yunxiao barked, pointing to the trail of water dripping along Mo Jiao’s path. "I just mopped the floor. If you dirty it, you’ll mop it clean again!"
"So much useless chatter," Mo Jiao growled in irritation.
By the time Su Ye and Huaiqing returned with their load of supplies and started moving them into the living room, they saw Mo Jiao cold-faced, wielding a mop like it was a sword, cleaning the stairs.
Even as he mopped, Mo Jiao’s attention remained on the second floor.
Hearing Su Ye and Huaiqing’s return upstairs, Xiao Jinsheng, now dressed in a clean skirt and slippers, quickly came downstairs.
As she walked past Mo Jiao, she gave him only a brief glance before averting her eyes.
But her wrist was suddenly seized by Mo Jiao.
"Come here. I need to ask you something," Mo Jiao said, letting go of the mop.
"What could you possibly want to ask me?" Xiao Jinsheng struggled in his grip, frowning.
"Come with me," Mo Jiao demanded.
Xiao Jinsheng backed away, shaking her head vehemently. "No way!"
They’d just had an argument earlier in the day.
Not to mention, this guy still hadn’t given up on killing her. She’d have to be out of her mind to go anywhere with him alone.
"You’re hurting her," Que Zelian said, coming downstairs and stepping between Mo Jiao and Xiao Jinsheng.
Taking the opportunity, Xiao Jinsheng quickly hid behind Que Zelian.
Even the other three men standing around the stairwell had different expressions, but all were visibly wary of Mo Jiao.
Seeing this, Mo Jiao’s lips curled into a cold, thin smile.
He rested one hand on the staircase railing and nodded slightly. "Fine. If you want me to say it in front of everyone, I don’t mind."
"What do you want to say?" Xiao Jinsheng asked, her brows tightly knit.
Without a word, Mo Jiao pulled out a photo and held it up in front of her. "Does he look familiar to you?"
Xiao Jinsheng studied the photo carefully. It showed a man with brown eyes and a bald head.
She shook her head in confusion. "Never seen him before."
"Seven days ago, you took a hundred Five-Star Crystal Cores from him and sold him my information," Mo Jiao said.
Xiao Jinsheng was even more astonished. "How could that be? I’ve never seen him before!"
"The only time I used you as a bargaining chip was today, when I sold you to Big Scar for one Three-Star Crystal Core," she said firmly. "And if I really did make a deal with him for a hundred Five-Star Crystal Cores, where are they? Seven days ago, I didn’t even have the Space ability."
"Could this be a misunderstanding?" Que Zelian asked, turning to Mo Jiao. "Where did you get this information from?"
"Wang Nuo, Black Market overseer," Mo Jiao said, dropping the photo as his cold eyes locked onto Xiao Jinsheng. "I got this from his memory—your deal with him."
"Memory?" Xiao Jinsheng asked, bewildered.
The four men around her immediately stiffened.
"You used an Illusion Realm to kill him?" Huaiqing asked.
"Mo Jiao’s superpower is unique. He can create Illusion Realms and also access people’s memories through them. It’s like breaking into someone’s brain—once that happens, they don’t survive." Que Zelian explained for Xiao Jinsheng’s benefit.
Xiao Jinsheng’s face turned pale, and she took another step back behind Que Zelian.
Looking at Mo Jiao, whose gaze was fixed on her, she tried to explain, "I really have no idea who that is. I don’t remember making any deal with that bald guy."
Just a moment ago, she had even doubted whether the original host’s memory system might have withheld information from her.
But after thinking about it carefully, the only outsider she’d interacted with seven days ago was Bai Yan.
That day, the farthest she ventured was to the yard gate to scream at Bai Yan.
After losing the argument, she went back to her room, sulked in silence, skipped dinner, and fumed in bed the entire day, trembling with rage.
