Chapter 53: REVERSED ROLES

[MUSIC RECOMMENDATION: END ~ CACOPHONY]

Nix lay there with his eyes closed, his heartbeat growing faint and weak. Kitanna felt her head spin.

She remembered all the harsh words she had used on him while they were in the forest, and instead of these women to save a dying man, they still wanted to bargain with her.

"We have to end the game amicably so there will be no take backs, right?" Almaria grinned, the corners of her eyes pulling back.

"I lost, I accept. Please let’s save the man. Khelan, come and help me out here," Kitanna felt so helpless at that point. As Nix’s heartbeat faded with every passing second, hers raced.

"Relax, Princess Kitanna. Anyone who sees this scene will take the wrong message. A forbidden love between the princess and her guard. We lose our guards every day; his life won’t be such a big deal," Almaria bit the tip of her fingers, stopping Khelan from making any move to assist Kitanna.

"What do you want?" Kitanna finally asked, her eyes tightened shut in anger.

Almaria tried to hide the laugh that was rising in her throat, then she began;

"You give the other seal which was given to you to me, and you will be stripped of your roles as a princess for three days. Your guard can’t go any lower; he is already dying. So instead of him being your guard, you will be his maid. The roles will be reversed," the Queen Dowager said.

Lady Deonisia watched as everything played out exactly as she had planned. It was only a theory she had planned to test; she suspected the princess had a soft spot for her guard. It turned out her assumptions were true.

"I accept; take it all," Kitanna glared at Khelan. "Come here and help me!" She yelled in anger, her hands trembling.

Khelan moved away from his mother and rushed to assist Kitanna with the guard. Even with the two of them, it was still difficult because Nix was very large and sturdy. His weight was twice the size of Khelan.

After much struggle, they finally managed to put Nix on a carriage that Almaria had claimed to call in case of any casualties. Kitanna ignored everything they had to say, and she left in the carriage with Nix, whose eyes were still closed and his body which was beginning to turn cold. Kitanna moved her body closer to his to keep him warm.

Larel, who stood there, did not know what to say; her legs felt pinned to the ground. These women were ready to bet a man’s life, and even her husband could not do anything. All he could do was stand around and wait for his mother’s orders.

Larel tightened her grip on her gown and slowly walked to her horse. Without waiting for anyone to help her, she left the place.

"Mother, it was too extreme," Khelan said after Larel left.

"Khelan, dear, go and take care of your wife. She seems shaken; you won’t understand, but everything I do is all for your sake, boy," Almaria said, patting Khelan’s shoulder.

Khelan shrugged his shoulder and left the place with his horse.

Almaria threw her head back in laughter, her eyes filled with joy.

"How did you know it was going to work?" She turned to ask her cousin.

"It was very easy to detect. These young ones and their affairs of the heart. Unlike our time, they don’t know how to hide it," Lady Deonisia said proudly.

"I still have a lot to learn from you," Almaria replied. "Did you see her face? She didn’t even bat an eye; she gave up her rights for a mere guard. I did the right thing by putting him beside her," she continued.

"Now that you have the seal, you should be careful so it doesn’t get to her anymore. Try as much as possible to keep her away from the throne. The closer she gets to it, the clearer her memories will become. You should sit up and not let me do everything for you," Lady Deonisia said to Almaria in a stern voice.

They both walked to their carriage and left for the palace.

Inside the palace, Kitanna stood beside Nix’s bed as the physicians tried to remove the poison from his system.

"Princess Kitanna, you should be ready for the worst. The poison has already soaked into his blood; saving him will only be a miracle. We have tried our best," the head physician said with a polite bow.

Kitanna rushed to where Nix lay. Even on his sickbed, his face still had a radiant glow, his expression calm. It was as if he was just taking a nap. Unlike the way the physician had spoken, implying he should be in severe pain, Nix appeared to be resting.

"Please wake up and look at me; I trust you. Please," Kitanna whimpered as she cried on his chest.

Axilla rushed into the room and saw the princess crying. She walked closer to where Kitanna was sitting.

"Princess Kitanna, I heard something happened during the walk. Why is the White Lord like that?" Axilla asked worriedly.

"Axilla... He tried to save me. Axilla, they said he might not wake up," Kitanna turned to look at Axilla, her eyes already puffed up from the tears.

Axilla raised an eyebrow. The White Lord? Not wake up? That was not possible. She shook her head.

"Princess Kitanna, can you tell me what actually happened to him?" Axilla asked because she was trying to confirm something.

"They shot him with a poisonous arrow. The physicians said the poison is unknown, so they can’t find any antidote for it," Kitanna replied, sitting up straight.

Axilla heaved a sigh of relief; she had thought something much worse had happened. She turned her face to look at the princess, who was the one who needed care at that moment. She looked like a mess.

Axilla slowly walked to stand in front of Kitanna, then she sat on her heels.

"Princess Kitanna, I don’t think you should be worried about the White Lord at the moment. You should go to your chamber and get some rest. You look stressed out," Axilla said in a low tone.

Kitanna was surprised to hear Axilla say such words and even remain calm in a life-threatening situation.

"Why do you want me not to worry? Did you not hear me? The physicians said he might not make it," Kitanna replied.

Axilla nodded before saying, "I know what the physicians said, but the White Lord is fine." She said this, causing confusion in Kitanna.

Axilla went on to explain, "Have you heard about the Blood of Poison? It is the White Lord. I don’t know how he does it, but he can stop his own heartbeat until the poison is neutralized with his own blood. Stories in our tribe have it that he was fed with poison during his training days, hence his immunity to it. I don’t know how true it is, but all I know is that he is very fine right now."

Axilla’s words left Kitanna in shock. She turned her head to look at Nix and then back at Axilla. Yes, she had heard of the Blood of Poison, but it was just a legend used to encourage warriors during their training. She never imagined that such a thing existed, or was Axilla trying to calm her down from the worst. Kitanna thought to he uprself.

"He is called the White Lord for a reason. Let us go so you can get dressed; I’m sure by the time you’re done, he will be awake," Axilla said, trying to help the princess stand up.

"I won’t leave here until I see him open his eyes and talk to me," Kitanna muttered. She refused to move from her position.

"I think you should listen to Axilla," Kitanna jumped up from her seat when she heard the familiar deep voice that calmed her soul.

Nix sat on his bed, his blue eyes shining under the dim light of the candles. He stared at Kitanna.
