RECOVERED MEMORY OF KITANNA TWENTY YEARS AGO...
A young guard leaned his back against the wall, his silver hair moving with the wind, but his eyes fixed on a particular brown-eyed princess who was training with other guards.
It was the same girl he had met when he was just a boy, the one who was going to be his wife in the near future, yet she knew nothing about him.
He watched her steady movements as she got ready to spar with another guard, the girl exuding fearlessness and confidence, with a mischievous look on her face that made her opponent flinch.
Nix tapped his finger on his lips and muttered, "Let’s see what you’ve got, Princess."
The young princess tied her black hair up, parting it to the side so she could see her opponent clearly. Holding her sword out, she stood in a defensive stance, her brown eyes keenly watching her opponent’s movements.
She was afraid of fighting someone twice her age, but she kept a grin handy as if nothing scared her.
"Ready!" the head guard shouted, "Fight!"
The princess moved to the side when the attacker tried to lunge at her, then she used one of the tricks she had picked up.
Using her sword, she picked up a handful of sand and hurled it at the guard’s face, temporarily blinding him, then she hit him on the neck with the edge of her sword, causing the man to fall unconscious.
"The winner is Princess Kitanna!" the head guard shouted, and everyone cheered for her.
Kitanna smiled, pushing her hair back proudly. Her brown eyes scanned the crowd, everyone looking at her with respect except for one person. There, at the corner of the training ground, a blue-eyed young man stared at her condescendingly, with a smug look on his face.
Kitanna started walking toward where the person was, but she was stopped by a eunuch.
"Princess Kitanna, there’s a letter for you," the eunuch said.
Kitanna’s eyes moved from the eunuch back to where the person had been standing, but he was no longer there. She sighed, "Clephas, you shouldn’t be distracting me like that," she muttered, then she asked, "What’s the letter about?"
Clephas moved closer and whispered, "Black rose, target Crown Princess of Orion," he said for the princess’s ears only.
Kitanna’s hand trembled. It was not new to her, but every time she received a letter to assassinate someone, for some reason, it scared her and it didn’t feel right. But she had to do it; it was her duty as a princess of Morado.
"Let me get ready, then," Kitanna replied before she left. As she walked away, she looked back at the corner where the young man had been standing, but there was nobody there. She walked inside the palace.
Clephas looked at the girl sadly, "Please be careful," the eunuch muttered.
Kitanna was ready to leave for the next kingdom, dressed in all black. Before she left, she was summoned to the Queen’s chamber.
"Greetings, Queen Almaria, I’m ready to carry out my duty," Kitanna bowed.
Almaria nodded, "Make sure you kill the crown princess of Orion; remember, you’re doing it to protect the throne. Also, if you’re caught, take the substance inside the vial," the queen said casually.
Kitanna scoffed before saying, "I’ll be on my way." She bowed and left the room.
Back inside the room, Almaria clenched her fist tightly. It was the way the girl acted so mighty that angered her. She said to the guard standing behind her in the shadows, "Follow her; make sure she doesn’t return if she gets caught."
Nix bowed deeply, "Yes my Queen."
Meanwhile Kitanna left with her horse, followed by three other assassins that are called her work maidens who assist her during her mission. Their ride to the other kingdom was peaceful, everywhere was already dark and people had retired to their homes.
Kitanna dismounted her horse, making sure it didn’t make a sound she jumped inside the house through the short fence. Unlike Morado, this kingdom did not have good buildings.
The young princess walked through the passage that was illuminated with the warm glow of the candles. She walked straight to the room that belonged to the crown princess without being caught.
Pushing the door open, it made small creaking sound. The first person Kitanna found was the a servant girl, and she hit a sensitive spot on her back making the girl pass out. Then she pushed open the curtain, revealing where the crown princess was resting.
".." Kitanna was speechless, the crown princess was just a young girl. Someone younger than her. How was she a threat to Morado.
"It’s for my kingdom," Kitanna murmured, unsheathing her sword but then the young crown princess moved in her sleep, then she blinked.
"Who are you?" The young girl asked.
Kitanna gulped, taking a step back. She couldn’t bear to kill someone so young and harmless. She dropped her sword and said, "Are you the crown princess of Orion?" She asked.
The girl sat up on the bed, and rubbed her eyes. "You entered the wrong room, my sister sleeps in the room after mine. But who are you?" The small girl asked innocently.
Kitanna pressed her lips, she was about to say something when she heard a movement outside the room. She placed her finger on her lips.
"Shh.." Kitanna snuffed out the candles in the room and hid inside the closet. When the person outside passed, she started leaving the room when the girl she had mistaken for the crown princess said.
"Who are you? Please don’t hurt my sister.." her small voice called after Kitanna.
Kitanna turned to look at the girl one more time and smiled, going back she dropped a rose with the girl and touched her hair.
"See you next time." She said before leaving the room.
Before Kitanna could step out of room, a loud whistle was heard alerting everyone that there were intruders in the palace.
Kitanna saw the work maidens she came with fighting for their lives, and they were obviously losing. She ran towards the fence, about to jump but then she lost her footing making her twist her ankle.
"Over there at the fence, one of them is about to escape." The guards of the palace shouted.
Fear gripped Kitanna, she didn’t kill anyone yet she was about to be killed. The first guard who launched an attack on her tried to cut her face but Kitanna used her sword to deflect the attack then she limped out of the place.
She didn’t wait to take the horse, or she would be caught, but it was too late. The guards were hot on her tails, chasing after her.
Kitanna decided to stay and fight back, gripping her sword tightly she waited for the first attacker, it was easier for her to deflect the first hit but when she tried to do it with the next attacker it didn’t work. Then she raised her sword to lift sand but the guard was someone experienced.
He moved back, and pushed off the girl’s weapon, pushing Kitanna to the ground.
"Ah" Kitanna grunted when she landed on the ground, it was over. She said in her mind, touching the small vial which was tied to her waist. Kitanna opened it to drink, but before it could touch her lips someone pushed it away.
Nix, who had been watching the girl from afar, saw her trying the trick she had done earlier, but it didn’t work. He decided to step in, throwing a small stone at the vial, which crashed on the ground, breaking into pieces.
Nix stepped forward and attacked the guards. It took him a little while before he reduced their numbers, then he turned to the princess and dragged her hand as they ran from there.
Kitanna was quick to recognize the blue eyes; it was the same person who had been watching her during her training. She couldn’t ask questions or say anything; she was too scared. She just followed him behind.
They hid inside a cart, covered with gunny sacks, as the guards of the kingdom searched around with burning torches for the intruders.
"We lost them," one of the guards announced. Soon they gave up on the search and returned to the palace.
Finally, when everywhere was clear, Nix jumped down from the cart, turn back he helped the princess get steady on her feet. Before he turned to leave the place.
"Wait..." Kitanna called, "I’ve seen you before, right? Why did you help me?" she asked.
Nix turned to look at the princess; her brown eyes still had the same innocence he saw the first time they met. But she wouldn’t remember him; she was just a baby. His eyes moved down to look at her left leg, which she tipped up.
Nix walked back, getting on one of his knees, he said, "Get on my back," his voice low and calm, yet it found a way to soothe Kitanna’s racing heart.
Without asking questions, she climbed onto his back, and he carried her away from there. They used Nix’s horse to get back to Morado.
"When the Queen asks, tell her you killed the Crown Princess of Orion, and nothing went wrong." Nix said casually, helping the princess stand firmly.
Kitanna held her dress tightly, "Why did you-" before she could say anything, the young guard walked away, not sparing her another look.
