Chapter 236: UNEASE IN THE PALACE

[MUSIC RECOMMENDATION: THE WORLD WE’VE MADE ~ RUELLE]

Back at Morado, Kitanna sat in front of her mirror while Nix moved the hairbrush gently down her midnight black hair.

"Really?" Kitanna turned to ask him. "Axilla doesn’t know her birth parents? That’s so sad."

Nix nodded, dropping the brush on the table, then using his hand to unweave the locks. "Yes, it’s something already written off, but then Cortez asked me about it. I hope they are okay," the king said to his wife.

Kitanna raised her brows. "Cortez? He asked you that? Larel told me something about Cortez too," she said in a low voice.

"What is that?" Nix asked.

Kitanna turned from the mirror to face her husband, as her mind went back to the conversation she had with Larel that day.

’What was that about?’ Kitanna remembered asking Larel, as she looked at her suspiciously.

Larel started, ’Actually, there’s something you need to know about Cortez. He is not my brother; my parents found him in front of our old house. It was as if someone dropped him there; his body was covered with blood, but there was a parchment that had his name written on it. He was still very young, so my mother begged my father to take him in. Ever since, my parents told us to keep our lips shut about it, but then Cortez fell sick every night. My parents thought it was because of his old life that was filled with suffering, but I heard him crying one night. He was calling for his mother, and when he woke up and saw me, he said he was the reason his mother was dead. Maybe I was young and didn’t understand it right, but doesn’t that mean he killed his mother?’ Larel had said that day to Kitanna.

Now, in present time, Nix held Kitanna’s hand as they stepped out of their room. He pondered on what Larel said to Kitanna. "A small child killing his mother? I’m not sure that would be the case; he might be feeling guilty. It happens sometimes," he said.

Kitanna nodded. "I thought about it too after Larel said that. That’s why I didn’t panic. If he was found with blood stains, it means he was attacked and maybe lost his mother in the process, and he saw it all. I guess he blamed himself for it, but Larel misunderstood the whole situation because she was also a child then."

Nix and his wife walked around the palace, holding each other. "Cortez really had a rough life too. That’s sad," the king said.

Kitanna nodded in agreement with her husband’s words. "Do you think it would be possible for him to marry Axilla comfortably without people tagging them as outcasts?" This worried Kitanna.

Nix replied, "You know the society we live in; it would take people time before they accept them, especially if anyone gets to hear their story. I just hope nothing goes wrong."

Kitanna sighed. "I wish Axilla’s family would come looking for her, or even Cortez." The queen said in a worried tone.

Nix nodded in agreement. "You’re right; they both deserve happiness. Deonisia said she has something to say; Hieron is there already; let’s go."

The couple got to the dungeon where Deonisia was held. The woman had already lost weight, with her hair which now fully turned grey.

"I hope it’s not one of her nonsense. We shouldn’t believe a word this woman says anymore," Kitanna said to Nix as soon as they entered the dungeon.

Deonisia raised her face. "The royal family is here," the woman remarked with a smile.

Hieron sighed. "Deonisia, give up already; don’t try to avoid the punishment of your sins," the man said in a calm voice. Since Lady Hash left the palace, his mood has been sour.

"If I tell you a big secret, what do I get in return?" The woman asked in a serious tone.

Kitanna replied, "What do you want?"

Deonisia raised her hand, causing the shackles to make a sound. "Let me live like a human. My crime is not so much; just killing a few persons. But you all are living happily now, right? Just get me out of here. That’s what I want."

"Just killing a few persons?" Kitanna asked. She couldn’t believe what she had just heard. "Is human life a joke to you? Why would you shed the blood of someone who had done nothing wrong to you? Why? Separating me from my father and mother," the queen asked in a sad voice.

Deonisia scowled. "Are we playing the innocent card now? That’s very rich a statement coming from a former assassin," the woman chuckled.

Kitanna nodded her head. "I wouldn’t have gone around killing people if my parents were kept alive. Who turned me into an assassin?"

Nix rubbed Kitanna’s back. "Relax, she’s just trying to provoke you." He turned to Deonisia and in a serious tone, he asked, "What do you have to say? You’ll be moved to the court officials for judgment today."

Deonisia replied, "You claim to be wise, but you’ve been harboring the family of the very man who killed your father." The woman revealed in a low voice.

Kitanna turned to look at Nix, confusion written all over her face.

"What do you mean by that?" Nix asked.

Deonisia clasped her hands together. "You’ve dined and wined with his child. Even made your enemy’s child your closest ally; life is so funny and cruel. But I guess you deserve it. If you think I’m lying, ask the chameleon you’ve harbored all these while, Lady Hash. She has been lying to you all," the woman completed.

Kitanna smiled. "This woman, you really can’t give up, right? You didn’t get your way the first time. Now you want to make us suspect people around us; that’s a cheap trick. Nix, don’t believe her; send her to the court officials," she nudged her husband.

Deonisia sneered. "I can’t go lower than where I am now; I have nothing to lose or gain, so I’ll say the truth. If you don’t believe me, ask Lady Hash! In the past, she was very close to the same man that killed your father. He made her the great merchant she is now! Ask her!" The woman shouted, but Nix and Kitanna were already on their way out of the dungeon.

Outside the prison, Kitanna held Nix’s face. "Don’t believe a word she says, okay? She’s trying to get in our heads."

Nix nodded with a faint smile. "I know, but we should also send a letter to Lady Hash."

Back inside the dungeon, one person didn’t leave. Hieron stood there in deep thought. "What do you mean by that?"

Deonisia chuckled. "Hieron, you know I never say empty words, right? Hash is not who she claims to be; she trained and fed the same child of the man you all are looking for. I watched everyone from afar all this while; she’s lying about who she really is..." Her voice trailed.

Meanwhile, inside the carriage that carried Venantius, his coachman announced.

"We are now at the merchant village."

The man opened his window and smiled. "This place is too humble for a my heir to live in, but not worry we will change that." The man muttered.

Dominique his aide, gulped and asked. "Do you think he would agree to follow you that easily?"

Venantius shook his head, "It won’t be my blood if he agrees that easily. But in the end he won’t have a choice, find out everything about him. And get us a place that’s hidden from the village where we can stay without being found until I get what I want." The man replied.
