Chapter 235: BLOODLINE

[MUSIC RECOMMENDATION: BORN TO DIE ~ KELLY CLARKSON]

Cortez chuckled, "I don’t think I know what you’re saying, Lady Hash," he replied nonchalantly.

Lady Hash sighed, "You know very much what I’m talking about; you know Larel is not your real family. I’m trying to tell you that your biolo-"

Cortez cut in before the woman could complete her statement, "I have only one father. And I know exactly where he is whenever I need him. The one you’re talking about, I’m not aware. You’re mistaken."

Lady Hash rubbed her temples tiredly, "Cortez, this is not the time to play carefree. I know you’re angry, but I’m very much aware of what your real father is capable of doing," the woman said with worry marred on her face.

"Lady Hash, I’ll only say this once. I have just one father, and someone who goes around killing his children can never be linked to me. Is that alright?" Cortez asked with a serious tone.

Lady Hash finally gave up; she knew that Cortez was as stubborn as the same man he shared blood with. But she was trying to let him live so that guilt wouldn’t eat her up totally. She had committed a lot of crimes in her past, and now she wanted to live a better life by letting this boy live no matter what. Even if it costs her own life, she wanted to be a better person. Not as the woman who turned her back on a mother and child, even though the child lived. But he passed through hell, reliving every day the moment he watched his own mother killed. Lady Hash wanted to clean her past of abandoning her own child, by taking care of another woman’s own.

Cortez held his hand forward to touch Lady Hash’s face, but then he withdrew it. "I don’t know what you know about me, but keep it to yourself. Let’s focus on what’s ahead; nothing is going to happen to me, okay?" he said in an assuring tone.

Lady Hash nodded, "What about Axilla? Are you going to tell her the truth? Or have you done that already?"

Cortez touched the bridge of his nose, "I’m going to tell, but not now. When I’m sure she can handle it, until then can you not tell her?"

Lady Hash nodded, "I won’t, I won’t tell her. She’s such a lovely girl; I don’t want you to lose her. You know what happened with Jenna after she found out that you’re not really of noble blood."

Cortez nodded his head, "I want to be able to really take care of Axilla before I can start something serious. She doesn’t have a notable bloodline; according to the king, she is not a true Wahel. If we both get married without sorting it out, our children would become outcasts." That was the only thing that worried Cortez. He would have been okay if Axilla’s bloodline was profound. That way, their family would have a name in the near future.

But with Axilla not having an origin, it was going to be a little difficult for them. That was the kind of society they lived in, and he didn’t want to bother Axilla about it.

"Axilla is not from Wahel? That sweet child. Does she know?" the woman asked worriedly; she wondered who could abandon someone that harmless, and it saddened her.

Cortez touched the bridge of his nose slightly, "She doesn’t know anything about it. I want to keep that innocence. Don’t change the way you treat her so she doesn’t suspect; I’ll handle the rest by myself," the young man remarked.

Lady Hash nodded, "I won’t, I’ll act like I always do." She sighed; life could be very funny. Why did it have to be Axilla and Cortez? Why did their love life have to be sad, just because of their origin? The woman wished she could do something about it, but Cortez had decided not to associate himself with his father, and it was better that way. The man was not someone worth calling father.

It was better to sit back and watch how life plays out, the woman thought to herself. Trying to do something might ruin everything; all she could do was stay beside Cortez and Axilla in this time of trouble until she was sure Venantius didn’t come around them.

While Cortez and Lady Hash were deep in their own thoughts, the door opened, and Axilla stepped inside carrying a bowl of herbs and a towel; behind her was Kayla, who brought in a tray of warm porridge.

"Cortez! You’re awake!" Axilla shouted excitedly, rushing towards the bed. She went to touch his face, worry written all over her face. "How do you feel? Why are you sitting this way? What about the wound on your back? Let me see; the physician said these herbs would work. Kayla, bring the porridge; he must be very hungry."

Lady Hash chuckled, "Easy there, lad, one question at a time." The woman gave a faint smile. It warmed her heart to see that Axilla really cared for Cortez. In a world where both of them didn’t know their true family, they were able to give all that love to each other, and it was a sight pleasing to the eyes.

"Bright flower, do you want me to eat or do you want to check my wound?" Cortez asked in a playful tone, his black eyes caging the hazel ones of Axilla.

Axilla blinked, trying to take her time to think about what she wanted him to do exactly, but her mind went blank.

Cortez tugged her hand, making her fall on his chest. "Sit here; I told you not to leave my side, did I not?"

Axilla blushed, burying her face in his chest. "Lady Hash and Kayla will see," she muttered.

Lady Hash cleared her throat, "I guess I missed the cue to leave. Who is there? Come help this one bat out of here. It reeks of lovesickness here, before I catch the flu."

Kayla, who was shocked to see Chief Cortez act all lovey with someone, finally gulped, moving her eyes away from the couple. She walked to help the woman stand properly before they both stepped out of the room.

"Does your back not hurt anymore? That wound looks very deep..." Axilla’s voice trailed as soon as the door was locked, indicating that it was just them in the room.

Cortez shrugged his shoulder, brushing the hair that was resting on Axilla’s face. He noticed how tired the girl’s eyes looked. She had worried the whole night for him, that she wasn’t able to sleep properly. Cortez smiled; he wanted everything, the love, the care, the innocence, and even her very soul. He wanted everything about Axilla to belong to just him.

"My wound is fine; it hurts, yes, but it serves as a reminder to me," Cortez replied, holding the girl’s hand and locking it with his own.

Axilla pressed her lips, "What reminder? How did you get that kind of wound?" She blinked, staring at him.

Cortez hummed, "I know you have a lot of questions to ask, but can you give me time? I promise to answer everything, okay?"

Axilla nodded her head. She decided to keep the question about Lady Jenna’s sanctuary and the drawing there. When the time was right, she would ask him.

"Axilla?" Cortez called casually.

Axilla moved back her face, "Yes, does your back hurt now?" She tried to move away, but Cortez held her tightly.

"How many places have you been to this morning? And how many persons saw you?" he asked.

Axilla furrowed her brow; she didn’t know what the question entailed, but she answered anyway. "I went to the kitchen; it was only the head maid there. I went to the physician’s room; it was only the assistant there. So she helped me out in getting good herbs, and Kayla." After giving it a thought for a minute, she nodded her head and said, "That’s all."

Cortez paused, his lips, "That’s a relief. They are all women. Do you not know what happens to a man early in the morning?"

Axilla shook her head, her innocent eyes staring back at him. "What happens to them?"

Cortez sucked his teeth, "Something very hard happens to them. Imagine them seeing a lady dressed like this." He moved his head forward to show the small garment Axilla was wearing, which now latched seductively to her body.

"Ah!" Axilla got up immediately, using her hand to cover her body. She had removed her gown last night, wearing only her inner garment. Because she was so worried about Cortez, she didn’t remember to change into something better. And she had rubbed her chest on his body. Axilla covered her face with her palm.

Cortez watched the shy girl try to hide her face behind her palm.

"You’re better now. Have a nice day; bye." Axilla dragged the nearest jacket and rushed out of the room.

Cortez grinned, "So cute." He muttered.
