Chapter 221: TEARS OF THE CROWN PRINCESS
[MUSIC RECOMMENDATION: YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE ~ JASMINE THOMPSON]
The wedding morning finally arrived, Axilla rubbed her eyes tiredly. It had been a long night with Cortez holding her closely; she didn’t know she would sleep so soundly. Now sitting up on the bed, she noticed the bed had turned cold; Cortez had already left the room a while ago. She remembered what he said to her the other night about being aware of the crown princess’s situation, and even Crown Prince Adric was aware of it.
Axilla wondered why nothing was done about it, and they allowed the poor girl to go through with the marriage. Then she remembered Cortez’s words of advice on how she shouldn’t pry into other people’s personal matters. She let go of the issue and walked to the bath to wash her face, so she could get ready for the wedding.
Even inside the bath was dry like it had not been used. Axilla twitched her lips; Cortez had acted like he wouldn’t let go of her the previous night, now he wasn’t there when she woke up. She removed her dress and got inside the bath, allowing the water to soak her up entirely. Now she understood why noblewomen didn’t joke with their baths; it was the most effective way of relieving stress and also feeling good at the same time.
Done with bathing, Axilla dressed up with the help of a maid who had later come to assist her. When the maid was almost done fixing the pins on her hair, Axilla watched the girl’s reflection from the mirror and she asked,
"Did you see the young master that I shared the room with?" She didn’t know how to put her relationship with Cortez, and that was all she could say.
The maid replied with her head bowed, "Milady, I only saw him speaking with His highness. I don’t know anything apart from that."
Axilla noticed how the maids in this palace were meek and a little too quiet. She shrugged her shoulder and sat quietly until her hair was done, then she wore the dress she had set out for the wedding. It was something simple and not too loud, to avoid attention it was not her day.
"Lead me to the Bride’s chamber" Axilla asked the maid, after she was done dressing.
The maid bowed and led the way to where the crown princess was dressing up.
Upon Axilla’s presence, she noticed the grim look on the crown princess’s face, unlike the beautiful smile she gave last night; the young girl was now looking sad.
"Leave us," The crown princess waved.
Axilla walked to stand in front of the girl; she wanted to comment on how beautiful and detailed her gown was, but the bride’s expression didn’t look like she was entertaining praises.
"What is it?" Axilla asked worriedly; did the girl perhaps not want to go ahead with the wedding and maybe wants to escape. But she looked like she could cope with it yesterday night. Axilla thought, having pity on the poor princess who was getting married to a man she barely knew.
The crown princess sniffled, "My sister was here last night." She held her dress tightly.
Axilla’s eyes widened, "She was? Did she now agree to marry the crown prince?" She asked.
The girl shook her head in disappointment, "The initial plan was for me to marry the crown prince until my sister is caught, then we can swap because we look very much alike. That was my father’s promise and the only reason I’ve been hopeful, but she came last night and she..." the girl’s voice trailed breaking at the end.
Axilla rushed to bring a dry handkerchief, dabbing it on her face so the make-up wouldn’t ruin so badly. It was still her wedding after all.
After the crown princess was done crying and blowing her nose into the handkerchief Axilla brought, she raised her face, "She came to tell me that she’s pregnant! Axilla, I have no hope of escaping this place." The crown princess started crying again.
Axilla looked around; she was really feeling sorry for this girl, so that was why she didn’t look so sad last night. Because her parents said they would swap her later, but now the plan has failed, and she had to go ahead with the marriage for real.
"It’s okay; what can I do to help?" Axilla, who didn’t know what to do in such an awkward situation, asked. It was a bad omen for a bride to cry on her wedding day, and people would think it was her, Axilla, who caused the tears. She didn’t want that.
The crown princess raised her face with hope now sparkling in her tears filled eyes. She reached out for Axilla’s hand and tugged it, pleading with her eyes she said, "Help me escape, please. Adric’s eyes are everywhere, and he knows what I want to do, but then he won’t suspect you. Get me out of here."
Axilla gulped; she was feeling sorry for the girl, but it was not enough to help her escape. If caught, the two of them would face death as their punishment. She gently brought down the girl’s hands and rubbed it gently.
"I know it’s hard, but I can’t help you escape. I will think of another plan, but helping you escape is like digging a grave for two. You heard the crown prince last night." Axilla tried to comfort the girl the way she could, but there was no way she could because listening to herself she sounded hopeless.
The crown princess dropped her shoulders, looking at herself in the mirror she sighed. "I guess it’s the end for me then. I will be the Queen of Avon after now, forced to marry the man I know nothing about. Do you know I tried to escape last night and Adric caught me? I don’t even know how he found out." The girl sighed.
Axilla rubbed her temples; the girl was already making attempts to escape. This is serious, she thought.
"If I’m going to get married, then I can as well use my favorite flower. That way I will feel comforted while walking down the aisle to my slaughterhouse." The crown princess remarked.
Axilla’s eyes shone brightly, a better way to help the girl which wasn’t close to escape. "Tell me what flower? I can go to pluck it in the garden for you."
The crown princess shook her head, "It’s not in the garden; I’ve checked, but I saw it on my way here. At the market in the village, if it’s not too much, can you help me get it?"
Axilla nodded, "Sure why not; write down their names for me; I will go get it before the wedding starts."
"That’s great! I can get married with my favorite flower, and you will bring them to me." The crown princess’s eyes lighted up, and she forgot about her tears. Picking up an inkstone, she wrote down everything that was needed and handed it over to Axilla.
Axilla read through them and smiled. "I will come back with all these. Take care of yourself before then." Saying this, Axilla dashed out of the room, holding her gown up. She needed to come back before the wedding begins, and she was glad she was able to help the girl smile on her wedding day.
