Chapter 211: MEETING WITH FIRST LOVE

[MUSIC RECOMMENDATION: BREATHE~ LEE HI]

The carriage finally stopped in front of a tall mansion. The coachman rushed to open the door, leaving a stool in front for his master to step on. Cortez was the first to come down from the carriage, then he held out his hand for Axilla to hold onto, and carefully she stepped down from the carriage.

She was wowed by the size of the mansion. It was different from the houses Axilla had seen in the village. It was almost like the palace back at Morado, and it left Axilla wondering if Cortez’s first love was a princess. She hadn’t seen the woman, and here she was feeling small already.

"Let’s go in," Cortez broke Axilla’s thought with his words, "You don’t have to worry about the people inside; all you have to do is focus on me, okay? There’s nothing special about them," he reassured the girl who had a worried look on her face.

Axilla nodded slightly as she walked towards the mansion with her hand held by Cortez. Soon, other carriages started arriving, and people of the higher class trooped inside the mansion, chattering and greeting their acquaintances. It was like a big celebration, and Axilla wondered why people would leave their house just to have tea in other people’s houses.

"They call it a tea party, but it’s like a medium to get men and women to meet themselves and strengthen family ties with marriage," Cortez clarified as they got to the door. Their jackets were taken by the servant who stood at the door before they stepped inside the room.

Axilla, who didn’t get a clear view of the exterior because of the darkness outside, was now able to see the inside of the mansion well. It was beautiful, simply designed, yet there was a taste of elegance and detailed presentation in the arrangement of the flowers and chairs.

"Is this really a party just for tea?" Axilla asked in a small voice that was meant for only Cortez to hear. She asked this because she was stunned by the beauty of the room, which was decorated just for tea.

Cortez chuckled, "Just for tea. You get the best type of tea and sometimes nice freshly home-baked cookies," the young master remarked, spotting a friend of his; he waved to the man with a smile.

Axilla wondered what was so special about the tea that it had to be held so late at night, in a big mansion that was beyond beautiful. She couldn’t get enough of the design on the walls as she turned around to look at them.

"So beautiful..." Axilla muttered to herself.

"Cortez... I didn’t know you would finally accept my invitation to come here; I thought you were still angry with me," the sweet voice of a woman was heard by Axilla. She turned to look at who the person was.

Right in front of Axilla, it was as if a heavenly halo was dancing around the woman’s head. Her face shone so bright, akin to the mid-afternoon sun, her smile radiated heat on everybody’s soul, including Axilla’s, who was captivated by the woman’s delicate appearance.

"Jenna," Cortez called the woman’s name, taking her hand he dropped a small kiss on it.

The woman Cortez identified as Jenna bowed elegantly with a sweet smile on her face, "How have you been, Cortez?" She asked sincerely.

Cortez cocked his head to a side, "If a beautiful married woman should ask about my well-being, it would only raise the eyes of the gossip mongers, just like it’s doing now." He moved his eyes to look at the people who had stopped what they were doing to inch closer and get some gossip to bite on.

"Chief Cortez still thinks Lady Jenna is beautiful after all these years. A man’s genuine love is very permanent," someone from the gathering shouted happily.

Axilla, who had been on the sideline, finally understood what was going on. The beautiful woman was Cortez’s first love, and she was now married. Axilla pressed her lips; she had no chance because, even as a woman, she couldn’t deny that the woman in front of her was just very beautiful. Not just that, she was beautiful; she also has a mansion. No fault whatsoever, maybe she’s rude and over pampered. Axilla nodded her head; she needed something to hate the woman who was Cortez’s first love. Yes, she must be very ru-

"I see you have come with a beautiful lady. Welcome to my humble abode, My lady. I am Lady Jenna Oleka."

Axilla’s last card crumbled; the woman was beautiful, humble, rich, and very polite. She gave the woman a smile, "Nice to meet you; I am Axilla." She bowed.

Axilla noticed how the woman furrowed her brows; it was because she didn’t add her last name, but her tribe didn’t use any last name. She opened her mouth to explain when Cortez stepped.

"Axilla likes to keep things plain on the first encounter, so you don’t need to know all about her today. Let’s join others." Cortez started walking while Axilla followed him behind, while Lady Jenna stayed back to greet her guests.

Axila noticed how people would look at her from time to time, then they would whisper among themselves.

"Cortez, I hope you can allow Lady Axilla to enjoy the party tonight; you’ve just been watching over her like a hawk," Lady Jenna said, carrying a tray of cookies; she passed it for them to pick.

Cortez picked the butter-filled cookie, and when he had a taste, he nodded in approval, "Sure, I’ll enjoy the party with her by my side. She’s too pretty; I don’t want these men to even think they have a chance with her," he remarked, brushing the cookie crumbs from his fingers.

Axilla blushed with the compliments Cortez was giving to her. She smiled internally, keeping her eyes on the ground.

"I know, but they say if you love something, let it go, and if it comes back, it belongs to-"

"Then you got married," Cortez cut the woman’s words short, "I think whoever made that statement was a coward." Cortez’s words made both Axilla and Lady Jenna furrow their brows.

"Yes, because why would I let go of someone I love. If you love someone, go for it and chase it, except the person’s heart already belongs to someone else." The young merchant replied with a grin.

Axilla nodded in agreement with Cortez’s words. But wait, she raised her face to look at Cortez, did he just profess to her first love that he loved her, Axilla?.

Cortez, feeling Axilla’s gaze on him, met with her eyes and gave her a charming wink.

"That’s sad; I was going to get Lady Axilla to meet with other ladies. If she’s going to be a wife of a Chief soon, then there are some persons she should meet." Lady Jenna said in a matter-of-fact tone, with a sweet smile still on her face.

"That’s very thoughtful of you, but My dear bright flower enjoys only my company. So she would pass," Cortez replied curtly; he knew very well about women’s gathering. It was a medium used to bully the less, and he wasn’t going to leave Axilla in their hands.

Axilla tugged Cortez’s shirt, blinking at him. If he continued to make her avoid people, then they would see her as someone who couldn’t stand up for herself.

Cortez narrowed his eyes at the girl, "You want to go?" He raised his brows and the girl nodded.

"Fine, but don’t hesitate to leave the place when you’re uncomfortable; I’ll be waiting for you right here." Cortez replied, finally Axilla and Jenna left the place as they joined other women in the room they had gathered.

"Good evening Ladies, let me introduce to you Lady Axilla." Lady Jenna introduced as soon as they entered the room where other noble women had gathered.

Axilla bowed with a smile on her face. When she raised her eyes, standing in front of her with a small teacup in her hand was the woman she had a brawl with in the afternoon at the tailor’s shop. Axilla gulped.
