Chapter 209: TEA PARTY
Chapter 209: TEA PARTY
[MUSIC RECOMMENDATION: IF WE HAVE EACH OTHER ~ ALEC BENJAMIN]
Cortez, reading through the newsletter with a cup of tea in hand, placed them gently when he heard the tailor’s assistant shout.
"Who?" He asked, his brow raised. Axilla had never been someone who resorted to violent unless they were mistaking her for someone else.
"The lady you came with, she’s..." the assistant pointed towards the changing room.
Cortez dropped the tea and the newsletter, rushing to the room where Axilla had entered to get her measurement done. He saw Axilla grabbing a noblewoman’s hair, while the woman also grabbed hers. It was a crazy scene.
Cortez didn’t wait for explanations; he went to stand behind Axilla, holding the other woman’s hand away from Axilla’s hair. His action stunned everyone who had gathered to watch the brawl between two women.
"Cortez! What are you doing?" The woman with the red lip gloss asked in shock. She had expected Cortez to reprimand the girl, being that she was someone of higher status, but here he was defending the lowly girl.
"Axilla, let go," Cortez whispered to the girl’s ear calmly. "I’m here now, let go of the woman’s hair."
Axilla, fuming with anger, calmed a little when she heard Cortez’s voice behind her. Before she let go of the woman’s hair, she made a final pull, causing the woman to scream in pain.
Cortez snickered at this little action before he finally dropped the woman’s hand.
"Cortez, you will pay for this! How dare your servant girl try to humiliate me, and you supported her!" The woman barked angrily.
Cortez dipped his hands in his pocket like he was not the one whom the woman was referring to. "I’m not sure what you’re talking about; all I see is two women having a brawl, and there’s an obvious loser. Very typical of losers to make threats." Cortez’s words caused laughter to erupt from the crowd that had gathered to watch the scene.
The woman’s face, red in both pain and shame, ran out of the shop crying.
Slowly, people started dispersing as there was nothing fun to see again. But the news about Cortez stepping in for a low-class maiden spread like wildfire.
Axilla stood at her position with her face looking at the floor like there was something interesting there. She didn’t feel ashamed of herself when she grabbed the woman’s hair because that woman deserved it, but she forgot she came with Cortez, and now he had seen her fighting and again causing trouble for him.
"You were planning on making the woman bald, yes? It would look good on her with that red thing on her lips." Cortez broke the silence, grinning ear to ear.
"Huh?" Axila raised her eyes to meet with Cortez’s, and she saw him pointing at her hands. In her hand was some of the woman’s hair, which she had grabbed with force. Axilla dusted her hands; she didn’t know she had pulled that hard.
"Next time you want to make someone bald, let me know first so we can prepare at home. There’s a glove you can wear which has a sticky content on it; it’ll help you easily pull out people’s hair with one grab."
Axilla blinked at the words coming from Cortez; she had expected him to give her an earful, and here she was being advised on how to pull people’s hair better. This man was really a bad influence, but deep down, it comforted her. She remembered how Cortez stepped inside the room, without asking questions came to her aid, and now he was supporting her actions. This warmed Axilla’s heart.
"Thank you, and I’m sorry for embarrassing you." Axilla muttered, keeping her eyes on the ground.
Cortez twitched his lips, "I’m not sure I know who the thank you belongs to." He said in a calm voice.
"Thank you, Cortez..." Axila replied, knowing how he loved her to call his name. And she thought it would do the trick, but Cortez stood there looking at her.
"I believe just calling my name is too small a price; I helped you hold the woman, so you can have a last pull and all I get is Cortez?" Cortez harrumphed.
Axilla held her dress, her eyebrows furrowed. If he didn’t want his name, then what did he want exactly? "What should I do then?"
Cortez finally grinned, mischief replaying in his eyes. He pointed at his lips, "They feel dry."
"Let me get you a lip balm." Axilla suggested, unsure of what he wanted.
Cortez continued to grin, "So innocent," he walked closer to Axilla, bending his back to meet with her face, he said, "Use the one on your lips."
Axilla tried to move back but felt the firm hands of Cortez hold her waist steady. Her heart flew right out of the shop. "W...we are outside." She whispered; with every closeness, her face was turning red almost setting ablaze.
Cortez nodded, "That I’m aware of; now let’s be quick." He advised, bringing his face close.
Axilla looked around the room; after the fight, a lot of persons had gone out of the room, but that didn’t mean that the door was locked. She looked at the handsome face in front of her and she gulped, moving closer she dropped a kiss on his lips before she moved back; she decided to get back at him for always making her shy. Axilla bit his lips.
"What do we have here?" Cortez grinned, before the smile on his face fell. His eyes darkened as he moved closer to the girl who had provoked him but not in a wrong way, infact it was in an alluring way.
Axilla gulped; she didn’t expect her actions to provoke him so bad, she started taking a step back until her back hit the wall with Cortez hovering in front of her.
"Master Cortez, sorry about today. Let’s have the lady’s measurement now." Their bliss was broken by a thoughtful madame Delia who just couldn’t read the room and felt it was the right time to take measurements.
Cortez, who was annoyed by the woman’s presence, stepped away from Axilla, going back to wait outside while Axilla was measured.
Axilla’s heart wouldn’t stop beating, and she prayed the girl taking her measurement wouldn’t notice. She thanked her stars that someone had entered; if not, she didn’t know what Cortez had wanted to do.
After they were done in the tailor’s shop, Cortez and Axilla walked to their carriage, the ride was a silent one, and Axilla wondered why Cortez always stayed calm when they were inside a carriage or an enclosed place but found it more pleasing to tease her outside. She raised her eyes to look at the young master, whose eyes were now closed with a calm demeanor akin to an innocent lamb. But she knew better than to call him innocent.
"If you continue looking at me like that, I would assume you want us to finish what we started." Cortez finally opened his eyes, meeting Axilla’s innocent gaze.
Axilla cleared her throat and looked outside the window, and here she was trying to call him innocent. "Why won’t you ask?" She finally asked.
"Because you would tell me when you’re ready." Cortez replied, knowing that she was asking about the incident that had happened back at the shop.
Axilla pressed her lips; she was ashamed of telling Cortez what the women said about her, but she needed to let him know that she didn’t just go about fighting with people.
"If you don’t want to, it’s fine." Cortez remarked, noticing how difficult it was for the girl to talk.
Axilla finally said to him, "They said I was spreading my legs for men and I’m just a lowly servant, and that you will always go back to your first love." She bit her lips when she was done talking.
Cortez hummed thoughtfully, "Did they now?" He was not pleased one bit that everyone was calling Axilla a servant and worse still a loose woman. It really got him very angry but he still maintained a calm aura.
"My said ’first love’ is having an evening tea party today. Let’s grace them with our presence and drink tea." Cortez replied with a grin.
"Drink tea?" Axilla asked.
"Drink tea." Cortez nodded.
