Chapter 197: HEAVEN’S CRY
Chapter 197: HEAVEN’S CRY
[MUSIC RECOMMENDATION: KUCHI KUCHI ~ J’ODIE]
Larel sat close to the bath she was using to bath her son. It was just her and no maid to assist her, this was because her parents didn’t approve the idea of her returning back home and with another woman’s child.
.....the conversation between Larel and her parents the day she returned home.
’Larel what is this madness? What are you doing back home?’ it was Larel’s mother who was the first to ask her only daughter.
Larel smiled, holding Labre close to her chest. He was her only comfort at that point. ’I sent a letter to you mama, about what was going on in my marriage. Khel-’ but Larel was not allowed to complete her words when her mother cut her short.
’Larel!! Why do you want to bring shame to this family, you know how popular your father is amongst other merchants. You are the only one who was married off to a royal family, why did you return? And what if your husband had an affair with another woman, why didn’t you stay beside him till the end? Why? Why did you return to soil the image your father worked so hard to polish.’ Larel’s mother wailed, while being held by her maids so she wouldn’t pass out.
Larel knew it was going to be like this but she also needed to face her fears. How long was she going to hide in Morado, if her own family won’t accept her then she had nowhere else to go. She stood there, her head bowed in shame. ’I’m sorry mama, I’m sorry papa.’ she muttered.
Finally her father spoke after looking at her for some seconds. ’In your letter you never mentioned having a child, who is that?’ the man pointed at Labre, looking at the boy with disdain.
Larel lifted up Labre with a smile and prideful look of a mother. ’He is now my son.’
’What do you mean ’now your son’?" Larel’s mother retorted, looking at her daughter suspiciously.
Larel held Labre tightly, because she knew her next words would break her parents totally. ’I realized that anyone can be a mother, it doesn’t have to be the birth mother. His name is Labre and he was given birth by my cowife but now I -’
The loud shriek of Larel’s mother was enough to awaken the underworld as the servants tried to console her.
’Woman! You failed to train your daughter properly now look at the disgrace she brought upon this family. Unable to have her own child she is bringing another woman’s child! Humph’ Larel’s father huffed with anger whilst blaming Larel’s uncouth character on the mother’s inability to train her child well.
Larel stood there, broken by her father’s words but even sad that her parents would have a problem between themselves because of her decision. ’Papa, is not Mama’s fault. I promise I won’t bring trouble with my son, just give us a place to stay.’ she pleaded feeling sorry for the child she carried. Larel subtly covered the boy’s ears so he wouldn’t hear all the harsh words even though Labre was still too young to even understand.
’There is no place for you to stay with that child. You have tarnished our family image enough, if it was just you, I would have at least started looking for potential suitors for you but now with another woman’s child you now claim as yours I can’t’ Larel’s father harrumphed, throwing his face away.
’Larel beg your father, tell him you will send the child away immediately.’ Larel’s mother advised pleading with her daughter.
Larel looked at her parents, tears welling up in her eyes. Then she got down on her knees, ’Papa, Mama...even if others reject me. I had expected my family to accept me, that is why despite the shame of a failed marriage I still returned home. Why would I send my own child away, knowing how it feels to be rejected. I don’t wish for the luxury I used to enjoy, even if is just as a servant, let me work here and have a home with my son.’ she pleaded, biting down her tears as she didn’t want to startle Labre.
Larel’s mother was shocked by her daughter’s words. ’Do you know what you’re doing Larel? By holding unto this child, you accept you won’t ever get married! No man would come to marry you. Look at me, my daughter, I will find a good noble family to adopt him, give him up and save your future.’ the woman tried to coerce her daughter for what she felt would benefit her.
Larel shook her head in tears, one she couldn’t control anymore. ’No mama! I do not want to get married anymore! I just want to happily live with my son and if any man would accept us then that’s fine. You of all persons should understand me better, as you are a mother yourself." Larel cried sorrowfully and this startled Labre, who now joined her in crying. It was a scene heartbreaking to watch.
’Since you have made your final decision, you can no longer enjoy the benefits as my daughter but I won’t send you away so my remaining dignity won’t be soiled. You will be living near the servants and you shall eat like them.’ Larel’s father said with a note of finality, before he walked out of the place, followed behind was his sad looking wife.
’Don’t worry Labre, we will be fine’ Larel had consoled the boy amidst tears that very day.
Now in the present, Larel did everything by herself. It was not easy because she was a noblewoman used to having her own maids. She looked down at her hands which used to be smooth like silk now had callouses all over.
After bathing Labre, she stepped out of the bath and entered her tiny room which was the only space that was given to her.
"There were two bears in one house, Mother bear and baby bear, Mama Bear is slim and baby bear is so cute and does a good job... Baby bear asked Where should we go in the forest? Let’s go to that spring over there, Mama Bear answered..." Larel sang delightfully while dressing her son up. By this time Labre could walk and say few words, so he hummed the song along with Larel.
"Mama.." Labre whispered while looking at Larel with so much love.
Larel lifted him up, "It’s been weeks since you started calling me that but everytime feels different and special, my prince." She smiled, it was Labre who held her from falling apart when she felt lost. He was her salvation.
"Puuhrince!" Labre giggled, as he enjoyed the playful throw.
"Yes, you are my prince!" Larel tickled him, the door opened cutting their fun short. A letter from Morado was delivered with the royal seal.
’Larel, I bring you good tidings with joy in my heart and that of Nix. We are happily announcing that a child is on its way to the royal family. Your noble work during your stay in the palace especially with training Labre is so much appreciated which is why I ask for you to come and stay with me, help me and teach me to be a great mother. If it is not too much of a task, I already sent a carriage but if it doesn’t return with you I understand.
Love, Queen Kitanna ’
Larel read the letter with a smile on her face, this was the greatest news ever. Kitanna was having a child, and not just that, someone finally acknowledged her to be a great mother. Finally, tears of joy welled up in her eyes.
"Mama... cry" Labre said, holding his mother’s face. The only mother he ever knew.
Larel shook her head, amidst the tears, "No Labre, it’s tears of joy. Heaven’s cry, they call it because we are going to the palace!!" She shouted in joy.
"Paaalacee!" Labre shouted too, unaware of his mother’s reason for joy but still sharing with her, any emotion she felt.
