Chapter 196: BEST PART OF THE STORY
[MUSIC RECOMMENDATION: IF IT IS YOU ~ JUNG SEUNG HWAN]
It was already daybreak when the last carriage that left the port arrived at the merchant village. Axilla, tired from the series of dramatic events that played out back at the port, had slept off, her head resting on her friend’s body. Her body jerked up when the carriage came to an abrupt stop, causing the sleep to disappear from her eyes.
Cortez, who sat in the same position throughout the journey like a mannequin, didn’t blink as his gaze rested on Axilla.
"Greetings, Master—" Axilla started, trying to greet him with a bow, but she wasn’t able to bow properly as Kayla was sleeping on her lap.
Cortez’s lips tugged at the end, "It seems you are having difficulty in what to address me. One minute, young master. The next Master Cortez; later it’s Chief Cortez. Should I help you with a name that’s only peculiar to you? I promise I’ll answer when you call." He grinned, using a piece of cloth to wipe his shoe, which sparkled at the tip.
Axilla cleared her throat; she knew better than to agree to Cortez’s proposition for a name only she would be calling him. If she didn’t know before, last night made his intentions clear to her, and it would only be coy of her if she pretends to be oblivious to Cortez’s feelings for her. It was something great, but at the same time overwhelming, and she wished to take things slow.
But what our bright flower didn’t know was that Cortez never took anything slow, be it business transactions or affairs concerning his heart. He made sure to go all in until Axilla’s thoughts were only consumed with thinking about him.
"I will call you Chief Cortez since I’m working under you like everyone else." Axilla suggested, trying to adjust her position because the way Cortez stared at her made her stomach turn like tiny birds were singing in it.
Cortez hummed, shaking his head like he had a lot going on, "That’s sad, I was going to give you a suitable name for your delicate lips. Did you know your lips taste like strawberry?" He asked, fully aware of what his words were doing to the girl in front of him. And her innocent reactions turned him on.
Axilla pressed her lips, her face now mopped red due to the constant waves of blush. "Chief... Cortez," she whispered, checking if Kayla was awake, but she heard her snoring. Axilla heaved a sigh of relief.
Cortez didn’t stop there; he continued, "Last night was too short; we should continue what we started, yeah? I want to have a taste of those lips aga—"
Axilla waved her hands, using her finger to close her lips, indicating that Cortez should stop talking. "Cortez! We are not alone; Kayla will hear you. Please stop," the young girl cried, covering Kayla’s ear with her hand.
Cortez grinned, mischief now ringing in his words. "So it’s okay for me to do as I please when we are alone?" The cunning man asked.
Axilla, who couldn’t gather her thoughts, nodded, then she shook her head quickly.
"I accept the latter; it means we should stay alone more often. See you later." Saying this, Cortez stepped down from the carriage with his hand dipped inside his trouser pocket. Before he walked away, he said,
"I like it, Cortez. Call me Cortez; I love the way it sounds from your lips."
He sauntered inside the merchant inn. The day was just getting better; he hummed.
Axilla rubbed her eyes as she tapped on Kayla’s shoulder. This young master was going to be the end of her; he doesn’t even show some mercy when it comes to teasing her. He just did what he wanted. Slowly a blush crept on Axilla’s cheek, and she shook her head, trying to get her act together.
"Kayla, Kayla, we are here; wake up." Axilla woke her friend up after she had settled the emotions Cortez elicited from her.
Kayla raked her hands through her hair, finally opening her eyes after what felt like a long sleep.
"Where are we?" The young girl mumbled, sitting up to stretch her waist properly.
Axilla opened the carriage door and stepped down, "We are back home." She replied as they both walked inside the inn.
Kayla, who was walking behind Axilla, stretched her back again, noticing how the young girl looked around at intervals like she was searching for something.
"Did you lose something... or someone?" Kayla asked, closing the distance between them.
Axilla laughed nervously, "No... what are you saying... haha." She kept her eyes straight; this was all Cortez’s fault, she said in her mind. If only he didn’t kiss her and say things to her that made her toes curl, then she wouldn’t be looking for him again. Axilla scolded herself.
Kayla sneered at her friend, "How did we leave the port? I feel like I had this long dream, where I was abducted and then rescued."
Axilla smiled, "What happened was..." She iterated the whole detail without missing anything out on what happened back at the port and the situation of Lady Abigail at the moment.
After listening to the story, Kayla threw her head back in laughter, as her whole body shook. "This sounds like a great scene in a movie; I wish I had been conscious to see it, especially Abigail’s face when she realizes she’s been shipped away from home." The young girl continued to laugh.
"You’re calling her Abigail now?" Axilla asked, raising an eyebrow. It was wrong to talk down on women of class.
Kayla nodded her head affirmatively, "She’s no longer a woman of high class as it stands. We can now refer to her as her name. So it’s Abigail." Kayla shouted excitedly. "Tell me more; I didn’t know those men of Ipolo were dirty scums. What else happened? So we stole their goods? I pledge to serve Chief Cortez for life," the girl giggled, enjoying the story.
Axilla rolled her eyes, "You really need to cut down on your drinking habit; it was because you were drunk that you got abducted." Axilla scolded her friend, pushing the door to her room open.
Kayla followed her inside, holding her chest in disappointment. "I can’t believe you say this to your savior. I drank the alcohol that was meant for you, got abducted in your place, and this is how you pay me back?" Her voice now sounding teary.
"What I meant is..." Axilla tried to calm her dramatic friend down.
Kayla cleaned the imaginary tears from her eyes, now looking at Axilla seriously. "Why did you do it?"
Axilla furrowed her brows, "Do what?"
"Miss out on the best part of the story!! What was your lips doing on Chief Cortez’s lips? You conceited girl!!" Kayla’s excited voice shook the room as she jumped up happily.
Axilla closed her eyes, "You were awake; you heard everything." This was the end of her; she wouldn’t live to hear the end of the story.
"You bet!" Kayla screamed, dancing in the room.
Just then a knock cut short their little party,
"There is letter from the palace, it’s for you, Axilla." The informant announced.
