Chapter 193: WARMTH OF A MOTHER

[MUSIC RECOMMENDATION: ONLY WITH HEART~ AHN EUN JIN]

Nix carried Kitanna like a delicate egg that would break with any atom of roughness. He placed her gently on the horse, then he mounted on the same horse behind her, holding the reins steadily. The horse’s hooves made clicking sounds as the king and queen of Morado went back to the palace.

They did not catch the well monster or unravel the reason behind the killings, but they returned with good news. News about a baby. Kitanna didn’t know how to feel about it; she was not expecting it to come this soon, but then again, they’ve been going about it like rabbits in their heat period, and it was expected. She smiled silently at the thought, moving her back carefully, she rested it on Nix’s chest.

"Are you okay?" Nix asked when he noticed her move.

Kitanna hummed, "I am, why is your heart beating so fast?" She noticed how Nix’s heart was racing like he was afraid of something, and she felt maybe it was because he didn’t want them to have a child yet.

"Do you not want to have a child with me?" Kitanna’s voice held a little sadness in them.

Nix used one of his hands to hold the rein while petting Kitanna’s head with the other. He leaned forward and dropped a kiss on her neck. "My greatest life fulfillment is to have my seed in you and make sure you and our child are safe." He replied.

Nix was torn between telling Kitanna the real reason why his family was called cursed. It was because every woman who birthed their seed never survived, and the thought of losing Kitanna because of his selfish wish of having a child feared him the most. He didn’t want to worry her because it was bad for a pregnant woman, but at the same time, he felt bad for keeping a secret from Kitanna.

Kitanna, who had no idea of the thoughts going on in her husband’s head, blushed at his smooth words. "That reminds me, back at the well, you were going to say something to me. What was it?"

Nix cleared his throat; earlier, he was going to tell her why they shouldn’t have children yet, but now he couldn’t. Nix looked around him for something to divert Kitanna’s attention.

"Look," Nix pointed, "The fireflies are out." He said, pointing towards the direction the night flies were gathered.

"Wow... they look so beautiful," Kitanna’s eyes shone in wonder, right before her was a golden hue in the dark formed by the night insects, giving beautiful rays of light to the darkest of night. The fireflies gathered in circles, as their golden light beautified the night. It was a thing of beauty which captivated the couple.

"Catching them would be nice, but I think they look beautiful in their natural setting." Kitanna said her thoughts loudly; she had wanted to catch them and keep for herself, but most of these insects don’t survive for long when locked away from their natural habitat.

Nix nodded in agreement while enjoying the night view with his wife. His mind wandered far on how to make sure his wife and child survived; he wanted to break the curse in his generation.

"You will need a lot of help; I’ll make sure the maids are all assigned to you and let me know if anything makes you uncomfortable." Nix broke the silence.

Kitanna chuckled, "I don’t think I want anyone to hear the news for now. We both just found out; let’s keep it that way." Kitanna suggested; she was still overwhelmed with the news. She needed time to calm down and digest the information before letting others know about it.

"It feels so... I don’t know, I’m having a baby?" Kitanna muttered, "Just a few moons ago, I was an assassin. Confused about what my title was, hated everyone around me, including you. Unsure of who to trust, but now I have you, and I’m also having our child. I’m starting my own family, Thank you so much, Nix." The emotions flooded in at once, as Kitanna reminisced about how things had moved so fast. It was like everything just happened yesterday, and here she was, about to be a mother.

Nix brought his hand forward, rubbing Kitanna’s stomach gently. "Thank you, Kitanna, for making me the happiest man. I’m going to have another princess. Little princess, I’m your father and was once your mother’s enemy." Nix joked, as they both laughed at his words.

"Who told you it’s going to be a girl? I want a boy. Another you." Kitanna mused, placing her hands on top of Nix’s.

Nix raised his shoulder, "I know because I’m the father. It’s a girl, my little princess." He said with a tone of finality.

Kitanna shook her head while laughing until her laughter died down. Then a sad look passed her face, "I don’t know what to do, or how to be a mother; I didn’t get to meet mine. I never felt the warmth of a mother. I don’t know if I’ll do a great job; I’m scared." The young queen finally stated her fear; she wanted to be the best wife and mother for her family, but she didn’t get any training from anyone. All she ever learned to use properly was a sword; Kitanna feared she wouldn’t be enough for her child and Nix.

"I’m sorry I couldn’t give you that, the warmth of a mother, but not to worry you’re just amazing and I’m sure our child would be lucky to have you as a mother. The way I am so fulfilled having you as my partner." Nix assured her, his velvety voice brushing on Kitanna’s neck.

"If it gets difficult, I can send for Axilla to return to the palace, and Larel. You’re comfortable around them, and I’m sure they can help you." Nix completed, using his free hand to gently push back Kitanna’s hair that was being blown by the night breeze.

Kitanna felt the warmth of Nix’s great love for her, and she couldn’t ask for anything more. "I love you Nix, I really do." She said those words, meaning every bit of it. It’s the way Nix always prioritized her before anything and anyone else.

"Well, I’ll be happy to have Axilla and Larel back, but it should be on their own free will. Axilla left the palace to find herself, and I hope she has. Larel would be better because she is doing great training Labre." Kitanna completed.

"When we get to the palace, you can write them a letter, okay?" Nix suggested as their horse arrived at the palace gate.

"Okay," Kitanna replied.

Getting inside the palace, Nix was the first to dismount the horse, then he helped Kitanna down on her feet, making sure she wasn’t feeling uncomfortable anywhere. His eyes were on her like that of an eagle.

"With the way you’re looking at me, everyone would find out." Kitanna whispered as both of them entered inside the palace.

"I’m just making sure you’re not uncomfortable while walking," Nix replied, placing his hands on Kitanna’s waist. He didn’t care about the servants who were standing in front.

The servants bowed their heads as the royal couple passed, holding each other like their love blossomed every minute.

Inside the royal chamber, Nix helped Kitanna remove her coat. Moving to his work table, he brought out piles of scrolls.

"What are you doing?" Kitanna asked, looking at her husband, as a yawn passed her lips. She was feeling tired.

Nix dropped his quill, "I can’t have my child in a kingdom that is not safe. I need to find who is disturbing the peace of Morado." He remarked, his blue eyes shining in the dark, as the warm light from the candle flickered.
