Chapter 184: SOMETHING IN THE WATER

[MUSIC RECOMMENDATION: DANCING AFTER DEATH ~ MATT MAESON]

Hieron furrowed his brow when the couple repeated the name he had just called.

Kitanna turned to face Nix, "Did you know about this? Is it the same Deonisia we know?" She asked her husband.

Nix shook his head, turning to ask his grandfather he said, "I don’t know, Hieron, did you see the woman that was locked with Almaria?"

Hieron didn’t reply immediately; he hummed for a moment trying to remember the face, "I didn’t see the woman who had been locked up with Almaria, but then Nix when you came to visit me at the mountains I remember you mentioned a Deonisia, yes? Describe this woman for me."

Kitanna looked at Nix, getting a nod of approval for her to continue. She said, "Lady Deonisia is chubby, and she speaks in a very relaxed tone that can unnerve anyone with a weak spirit."

"Does she have a black mark on her left hand?, if I remember correctly," Hieron completed, not really sure about where the mark was located but he knew there was a little discoloration on the woman’s hand.

Kitanna hummed, "I didn’t pay too much attention to her but I know someone who can give us these details." The young queen turned to look at Nix, who also agreed with her.

Nix waved to one of the maids, "Get the prisoner, Misam here at once." He ordered.

A scrawny-looking Misam was dragged inside of the dining room; the table had already been cleared as the three persons in the room waited anxiously, eager to know if it was the same woman who had been backing up Almaria was also the same person who allied with people that killed Kitanna’s grandfather.

"Misam, did you ever notice any mark on Lady Deonisia’s hand as you have known her for a while, yes?" Kitanna asked as soon as Misam was released.

Misam licked her dry lips, which were already peeling; her eyes locked on the jug which contained water on the table.

Kitanna noticed this and waved for a maid to give Misam a cup of water. Which when touched Misam’s lips she gulped it like it was an elixir, her eyes became alive instantly.

"There’s one, on her left hand a different color from her skin." Misam said after digesting her water.

"That explains this, but why would Deonisia keep fighting the Morgair after she had already killed my grandfather." Kitanna hummed, biting her lower lips. This was it, the beginning of everything, Deonisia wanted to see the last of Morgair dead but for what reason.

"The woman that was trying to confuse Nix with the amulet was also sent by Deonisia. It only means she knows about how he died, everything is on her." Kitanna concluded.

Hieron and Nix nodded in agreement, it was just one enemy who had been killing the Zeno and the Morgair, and yet the woman wouldn’t give up.

Misam noticed the look on their faces and guessed it could be an opportunity for her to plead the fifth. "Please, I have repented of my sins. I promise to live a better life; I was deceived by Deonisia and Almaria. Don’t send me back there." The woman knelt down as her shackles made noise.

Before Nix could say anything, the door opened, and Chantal stepped inside bowing to the royal family.

"Your Majesty, there is something you need to see outside." Chantal said, with his head bowed.

Kitanna looked at Nix, who also had a blank expression on his face.

"What is it? Chantal" Nix asked, trying not to alarm Kitanna.

Chantal pointed outside, his hands trembling. "T-the the people, they...their..." it was obvious the young guard could not reiterate whatever it was he had seen outside but he tried his best to keep calm.

The couple didn’t wait to hear what the guard had to say; they rushed outside to see what had got the young guard speechless.

Hieron stood up to follow them when he felt someone hold his leg tightly. Looking down it was the prisoner who was brought in to testify.

"Please, help me." Misam begged; she had tasted freedom and she didn’t want to let go.

Hieron nodded, "I will, you there send her back to her humble abode." The man ordered a guard before stepping out of the room.

Misam shrieked as she was dragged back inside the prison she dreaded to return.

Outside the palace, the villagers gathered murmuring amongst themselves, while pointing at the bodies covered with shrubs.

"It is the blood of Zeno, they will destroy us." One of the villagers shouted.

"Cursed! Cursed!! Morado is cursed!!" Another one spat out, stomping his feet on the ground violently.

A woman dressed in a dull woolen dress fell on the ground, wailing helplessly. "My only son, he is my only son!!!! The blood of Zeno has brought a curse on us. Send them away and bring back my son." The woman shouted holding one of the dried shrubs that was used to cover a body indicating that it was her son.

Kitanna held Nix’s hand tightly, "Watch what you say about the king! He is your king and you should respect that." The young woman said in an authoritative voice.

Nix looked down on the hand Kitanna was holding, she was trembling but she tried to act strong in front of people while protecting his name. He smiled.

"Then explain this!" The woman pulled the dry shrub revealing the numerous corpses on the ground.

Kitanna’s heart sank into her stomach when she saw the nature of the corpse; she turned away burying her face on Nix’s chest. Nix held her closely protecting her eyes from seeing the gruesome sight.

The bodies on the ground had turned white, with a purple color on their lips but what made it even uglier was the large cut on their lower abdomen which attracted flies to the corpse. It was a sight unheard of.

Nix turned to look at his side, as if understanding the sign Chantal rushed to brief the king.

"Your Majesty, each of these persons on the ground has a link with the well that is found close to the village bridge." Chantal informed.

Nix tilted his head, his hands still holding Kitanna closely. "Be precise with your statement " the king said in a hard tone.

Chantal cleared his throat, "This started a few days after you left for Odel, whenever we go for patrol we find bodies close to the well, with their body like this and something missing from their stomach. So we assumed that there must be something in the water, which attacks people in the dark." The young guard clarified.

Nix hummed, "Something in the water..." His voice trailed, nodding at the well-calculated scheme of anyone who was playing the dirty trick.

"Ahhhh!!" Another scream was heard from a villager who carried the corpse of a young woman which also looked like the ones on the ground.

"Interesting" Nix mused.
