Chapter 182: KAIMA-RIYA PORT
[MUSIC RECOMMENDATION: MY SEA ~ IU]
Axilla finally calmed down after threatening to rip Kayla’s hair off. She couldn’t believe she had said she was an escort loudly to Cortez.
There was no need; he would never fall for a girl like her who always embarrassed herself, and it was all because of the girl sitting beside her. Axilla turned to glare at Kayla once more, who moved to the corner like a scared puppy.
"Axilla, I’m sure he wanted to stay in that carriage with you too. That woman forced herself; they always do, all of them." Kayla attempted to pacify her friend.
Axilla didn’t reply; her mind went back to the woman she saw inside the carriage. She screamed elegance and beauty; her dressing was quite different, but it still looked good, and it was exactly like that of the young master. Thicker clothes, boots, and pants – Axilla looked at her own dressing, if it wasn’t a soiree she was attending. She sighed.
"You don’t have to feel so down. There are always countless opportunities, and every disappointment is a blessing, so they say." Kayla encouraged.
"Why didn’t you tell me the port was a rough place? Tell me everything you know about the port and don’t miss anything out." Axilla replied.
Kayla reclined on her chair, "Kaima-riya, the sea monster’s paradise, that’s what the port is called." Her voice sounded very distant.
Axilla tilted her head; the name of the port sounded ominous. Was it not just a place to carry goods? Why was everyone making it look very dangerous, the young girl thought.
"I don’t know how true the story is, but they said that long ago, the sea monster was saved by a female human, so in return, he blessed her abundantly with all the riches of life. But what the woman didn’t know was that the sea monster drowned people’s ships and brought them to the shore where she lived. That’s the legend; I don’t know how true it is. Others say it’s just a myth to scare young boys who want to sail the sea. These days people from different kingdoms go there to carry their goods gotten from other seas." Kayla told the tale to an attentive Axilla who was intrigued with the story.
"Another thing is, some say the sea monster and the woman had a child or whatever. I don’t know. But you should be careful when you get there; some young men kidnap women and sell them off as slaves or even keep them as their wives. Not everyone there came to collect their goods; some came to take women away. Also, the sea can be rough sometimes, especially when the waves are strong, hitting the shore. I didn’t ask you to dress heavily because the weather is quite sunny. So don’t worry yourself; we will be fine." Kayla remarked, holding Axilla’s hands.
Axilla nodded her head; she looked out of the window. The weather was quite bright; the sun was at its peak. Obviously, the port would be dry, and the waves wouldn’t worry them, she concluded, as she watched the trees move behind them. She thought of what the young master would be doing inside the carriage with the woman. Would they be...? Axilla pinched herself when her thoughts tried to deviate.
It wasn’t her business how the young master wanted to live his life, and the woman she had seen earlier in the carriage was very beautiful. It would be an error if any man could resist her.
Leaving the thoughts about the woman and the young master, the innocent Bright flower pinched the bridge of her nose. "Kaima-riya," she muttered, and this caused goosebumps to rise on her skin. It was not a good feeling, Axilla thought.
Inside the other carriage, Cortez lit a cigarette, his eyes gazing at the natural landscape outside the carriage.
"The weather is very hot; how did you know the port would be cold?" The woman named Abigail asked, picking a slim cigarette from the box tied around her waist.
Cortez puffed the smoke, making rings of different sizes. "The hotter the land, the colder the sea. That’s how Kaima-riya has been working. I’m surprised you don’t know about it." He replied nonchalantly, moving his concentration back to the outside.
Abigail smiled, dragging a smoke from her cigarette. "It means that tiny girl that was accused of theft would die of cold there. We should abandon her; if such happens, she wouldn’t cause any delay for us." The woman replied, letting out an evil laugh that had the side of her eyes crinkling.
Cortez flicked the cigar he was holding out of the window; his eyes now lazily gazed at the woman in front of him. "You look pretty..."
Abigail blushed at the comment, going to sit close to Cortez while trying to massage his hands.
"But would be prettier if your mouth was sealed. You think like a sea urchin; do they think, no? That explains why you run your mouth first." Cortez comfortably insulted the woman who now sat frozen on her seat. Her face turned red in shame.
"Cortez! Are you insulting me because of that girl? A nobody? You know who my father is, right? You wouldn’t be the most powerful merchant if not because of my father, and that’s because I put in good words for you." Abigail retorted, feeling so furious that the man she loved so much, and wanted him to wife her, was talking down on her because of a nobody.
Cortez hummed, "beats me."
"What?" Abigail asked.
"How women of class often feel intimidated by girls like her. You clearly have everything, a rich father, the face and body. Why are you worried about her? The more you do this, the more my attention goes to her." Cortez replied truthfully. The more people mentioned Axilla, the more he wanted to know about her.
Abigail huffed, "I’m sorry for mentioning her; let’s think about us. About how we can start our own family; you don’t have to be on the road every day; my father would get you workers." The woman leaned forward trying to kiss Cortez.
Cortez used his finger to tip her back, "I love the road; now stop dreaming about being my wife, it is my worst nightmare." He remarked, before Abigail could reply, he said.
"Welcome to Kaima-riya port." His eyes glistened as he saw the old signpost at the entrance of the port. Just like he had predicted, the weather was different; it was as if it was going to rain anytime soon.
Axilla exhaled when she also saw the sign boldly written, but was looking old and rusty. "Kaima-riya port," she muttered, and the first wave blew, causing her to shiver. She turned to Kayla,
"The weather is sunny, we’ll be fine" Axilla reiterated what Kayla had said earlier.
Kayla grinned sheepishly, "Welcome to the sea monster’s paradise. Surprise!" She raised her hands playfully.
