Chapter 106: CONFESSION
[MUSIC RECOMMENDATION: ORB AND SCEPTRE~ WALTON]
Words spread within the palace immediately that the former king was to be banished. The maids did not hesitate to bite on to the juicy gossip.
"I heard that the exile extends to even his offspring. That is to say, Bareea’s child will leave too," one of the maids said in a hushed tone.
"How the mighty have fallen. Remember, it was just a few moons ago that she was flying so high because she spread her legs for the king and had his child. Now we are even better than her; she is going to have no kingdom that will accept them," another maid added to the gossip.
"It doesn’t matter; she will even enjoy it the most. Her whoring will get them a place in one of the kingdoms. She can continue to bed with different men until she shrinks up," Gurit, who was the maid that hated Bareea the most, chipped in. Out of everything that has happened in the palace, she was very happy to hear that the first concubine would lose her position. Gurit couldn’t take it; a used-to be maid like her treating her like trash suddenly because she hit the jackpot by bearing a son for the king.
"What about Queen Larel? What will be her fate?" A maid asked, and this caused the room to go silent. All the maids passed each other a look, and they shrugged their shoulders.
Larel sat inside her room; she had tried to speak with Kitanna privately after their encounter at the isolated quarters, but there have not been any chances. When she heard of the news that Khelan was banished, she prepared herself to leave the palace. It was only right for her to do because they were married, and she had also done something wrong against Kitanna.
"Can I come in?" Larel turned to look at her door when she heard the voice. It was a familiar one, Princess Kitanna.
Without waiting further, Kitanna entered the room; her brown eyes stared intently at Larel,
who was now bowing her head in guilt.
Kitanna prompted to ask, "Why? Why did you do it?"
Larel fisted her hands into balls and held to her dress firmly; she knew exactly what Kitanna was talking about.
Larel released her hands and got on her knees, with her face buried on the ground, she sobbed softly.
She couldn’t bear to see the princess, because she had allowed herself to be used. Her mind went back to how everything had actually started.
When Kitanna travelled with Nix to Odel, Almaria had come to seek Larel and that was where the deal was made. She could still remember the words of Almaria which now echoed in her mind.
"Do you think supporting Kitanna is the best option for you?. Your husband is about to lose his throne, and do you know what that means? You will leave the palace without anything. But you can’t go back to your kingdom, anywhere your husband goes, same will be for you."
The words of Almaria had seeped into her bones like fluids of posion, washing her mind off from what is right. Larel who wanted to set everything right, realized that at the same time she didn’t want her husband to lose the throne.
"Pretend to be Kitanna’s ally, get every information back to me. When you are needed provide your services, I will remove Bareea from Khelan’s side. She’s just but a lowly maid, do you think I’ll let her child be the heir? It is only right, that you the queen bore the king an heir. Don’t you think so?"
And that was it, Larel bit into the forbidden fruit. She turned her back on Kitanna in exchange of retaining her power. Almaria had promised to remove the concubine who posed as a threat.
In the present moment, Larel found herself tongue tied, she was waiting for this moment to apologize to Kitanna. Now the moment was here she couldn’t find the words to use.
Larel released her hands, and got on her knees, with her face buried on the ground, she sobbed softly.
"I am sorry Princess Kitanna. I don’t deserve to look at your face; I don’t have any reasons for my actions. I did it out of pure greed; if I allowed you to soar, I will be at a disadvantage because Khelan is my husband." Larel sobbed heartbreakingly. She couldn’t bring herself to look at Kitanna; she had become the same person she judged when she entered the palace.
The poison she dreaded was engulfing her slowly, and she didn’t know. Almaria’s venom pushed into the souls of unsuspecting people, making them be just like her.
Kitanna continued to watch the former queen; she was disappointed when she found out that Larel had betrayed her. But she was even happier when she got to know that Larel was not the actual mouse. She was just a puppet in the game just like Man-uel.
"And Axilla?" Kitanna asked, "What about Axilla?"
Larel raised her face; she knitted her brows not understanding what the princess actually meant. When she did, she said, "I really liked Axilla. I would never do anything to harm her. She was among the persons who made me feel welcomed when I felt lost within the palace walls. I helped her escape not because I was working with Almaria. I did it because I like Axilla. I swear Princess Kitanna." Larel was still kneeling but her face was now looking up at Kitanna.
Kitanna walked close to where Larel was kneeling and sat on her heels; she put her hands on the woman’s shoulder and said, "I won’t say I was not disappointed when I found out what you did. But everyone has a moment of weakness; I can’t judge you because of that one moment of weakness. You did what every wife would do; from one side, you wanted to protect your husband, and from another view, you were taking what rightfully belonged to me."
Kitanna sighed, "I hope you learn your lessons and live better. Larel, you are a very nice person, and I wouldn’t want to harm you. I have asked that you and Barea get the privilege to stay back in Morado if you wish. Khelan married you on a ground of lies, and it can be enough reason to terminate the marriage. You are now a free woman; what you choose to do from now on all depends on you."
Saying this Kitanna patted the woman one last time and stood up; then she heard her speak.
"The mouse, I have something you should know." Larel said in a low voice, even if it was the last good. Then she wanted to make up for her mistake.
Kitanna turned "And what is that?" She asked, her eyes mixed with curiosity and mischief.
"Is that...." Larel’s voice trailed in the dark night.
