Chapter 905: Chapter 394: Rowing Upstream (Part 2)
If it were Maya, such matters could be directly communicated. But with Shana, although it seemed like she was persuading Lin Wu, deep down she still lacked some confidence and needed Lin Wu’s approval.
After dinner, everyone gathered around to discuss the situation. Except for Xiao Wu, who asked a few questions, the rest basically supported Shana. "Basically" because the risk was significant. Even in the Tranquil Water Area, two rubber boats had been capsized, and the southwest current was swifter and more complex, with rapids being a common occurrence.
Shana shared her opinion that doubling the boat’s load would improve stability. Rapid currents meant shallow waters, so even if the boats capsized, some supplies might be recoverable. Without any better alternatives, everyone agreed to Shana’s plan.
According to Shana’s list, the necessary items were moved onto the three rubber boats. Six large water barrels were hung on the boats, and the waterproof covers of the boats were removed. Supplies like ropes were placed at the stern for towing.
The essential items list consisted of: a small generator, solar panels, a 10-kilogram bag of rice, a jar of pickles, 20 kilograms of fabric, a small tent, a set of lighters and a bundle of magnesium sticks, three pots and spoons, two sealed medical boxes and medicines, a fire axe, two kilograms of seeds, a drilling machine, a small toolbox, steel wire ropes, expansion screws, a set of spare clothes and shoes for each person, and all weaponry and ammunition.
Boat 1’s captain, Shana, equipped with Little Knife and Snow Egg, was the group with the most comprehensive abilities.
Boat 2’s captain, Stone, teamed up with Su Shi and Xiao Wu, the group with balanced physical strength.
Boat 3’s captain, Lin Wu, accompanied by Xiao Wen and Lin Meng, was the group with the strongest individual and the weakest overall capabilities.
Shana’s idea was to have the strongest boat lead, responsible for reconnaissance and handling most of the zombies. If anything happened to the lead boat, Lin Wu could provide support. Having Lin Wu on boat 1 would leave the rear boats without a core decision-maker in case of crisis.
At noon, the three boats began their new journey.
After changing strategies, no longer needing to worry about self-made boats, if the lead boat could get through, the following ones could too, so the three boats maintained a moderate speed and moved forward steadily. West City had fewer skyscrapers and more apartment buildings. Along the way, several survivors in the apartments waved for rescue, but Shadow, being overwhelmed, ignored them.
On the road, survivors were spotted using foam boxes and other materials to build a small boat, but lacking propulsion and the ability to withstand waves, it could only be used for scavenging nearby. Some survivors were in high spirits, fishing from their apartment buildings. Others took advantage of the dispersed zombies, unable to gather fighting strength, and started relocating their shelters to collect various resources.
Xiao Wen and Lin Meng lay at the prow of the boat, heads close together, chatting. Xiao Wen appreciated Lin Meng’s optimistic outlook and kept reflecting on her own fearfulness in the face of danger. Soon, the two women began discussing Xiao Wu. Following the principle of reciprocity, Xiao Wen asked Lin Meng about Lin Wu, thinking he was Lin Meng’s lover.
Lin Meng laughed heartily, telling Xiao Wen that wasn’t the case at all. Lin Wu was kind to all his companions, but he looked after her more because she was a bit slow. Lin Wu wasn’t her type either; she preferred a domineering CEO type, and although Lin Wu was demonic and dominant, he was essentially amiable and modest, and somewhat sentimental.
The lead boat had mostly dealt with drifting hazards and zombies, so the two women didn’t have much work. Xiao Wen, now braver, dared to push zombies and corpses aside with a hooked pole.
Lin Wu stretched his legs out in the middle, leaning back at the stern of the boat, operating the outboard motor with one hand. Bored, he looked up at the sky, feeling the rain sting his face. The prolonged soaking was unpleasant for everyone; Lin Wu felt the same but, like the others, didn’t want to spread his discomfort to the whole team.
Shana’s voice came through, "We are 20 kilometers from point G. The water depth on the street ahead is about 1.5 meters and the current is not strong. Be careful, there are many vehicles underneath and some zombies can stand on the roofs of the vehicles."
Lin Wu switched to operating the outboard motor with the other hand and placed his pistol on his thigh. As the boats entered the street, gunshots came from boat 2. Xiao Wu explained, "A zombie hiding behind a bus shelter suddenly appeared and grabbed the net."
After Xiao Wu spoke, a female corpse drifted slowly from the sidewalk toward the space between boats 2 and 3. Lin Wu watched the corpse, but saw a piece of foam passing by in the opposite direction next to it. Not clear on the exact situation, Lin Wu took his pistol and with one shot, blew the corpse’s head off. The corpse jolted the moment it was shot. And due to this jolt, Lin Wu saw a dagger in the corpse’s left hand.
Suddenly, a few survivors appeared on the second floor of a building on the street, throwing stones at Lin Wu from only 12 meters away. Without hesitation, Lin Wu started firing continuously. Two of the survivors were hit, while the other two pulled their companions away from the window.
Lin Wu took his Aka off his back for vigilance, while Xiao Wen turned around to grab the walkie-talkie and called out, "Boat 3 is under attack; Lin Meng’s head is bleeding and she’s unconscious."
Shana replied, "Received. Boat 2 will provide fire cover. Keep guard and continue forward." She wanted to ask if they should stop and sweep the survivors, but as the current highest decision-maker for the fleet, she had the responsibility to act in the fleet’s interests, so she gave the order to move on.
The survivors appeared in a restaurant on the second floor by the street. The restaurant had a street-facing front over a hundred meters wide, all with floor-to-ceiling windows, which were now all shattered. A masked woman holding a homemade Molotov Cocktail ran to the window and threw it out, only to be riddled with bullets by Xiao Wu and Lin Wu. The Molotov Cocktail landed on boat 3 and burst into flames. Xiao Wen hurriedly wrapped Lin Meng and ducked into the water-filled hull, extinguishing the flames in Lin Meng’s hair.
