Chapter 904: Chapter 393: Rowing Upstream (Part 3)
Shana wore a sunhat, which ensured the rainwater flowing down from the top wouldn’t soak her eyes. She and Lin Wu were sitting on the ground beside the tent, with Lin Wu holding open an umbrella, while Shana controlled the drone, scouting ahead.
"To this point, the current becomes rougher and the water level shallower, but that’s not a big deal," Shana said. "Lin Wu, I’ve decided to reach Point G by the end of today." The so-called Point G was a church five kilometers away from the Southwest Distribution Warehouse and the tallest building around. They would wait at Point G for the floodwaters to recede before walking to the Southwest Distribution Warehouse.
Lin Wu said, "There’s still 35 kilometers to go, and it’s daunting from all perspectives." First, it was uncertain whether the fuel would last all the way to Point G. Secondly, whether everyone’s Physical Strength would hold up under the strain was also a question, considering they had been soaked in water all the time, maintaining a low core body temperature while continuously fighting against the infected zombies, and needing to keep their minds clear and calm. The last challenge was due to the complex terrain and swift, shallow waters towards the southwest, making it hard to effectively protect the makeshift boat.
Shana proposed a bold suggestion: "Divide and conquer, keep three boats, three people per boat. The surplus people will lie sideways in the middle, with their heads and feet stretching out of the boat. The small boats can adjust the position of people by themselves. The three boats should no longer advance side by side; the first boat will take the lead, connected by a rope to boat number two, which is in turn connected to boat number three, with a 15-meter gap between each."
Shana continued, "This takes care of all the issues. Some people can rest while others work; we can rotate. Reducing from four boats to three, we’ll have enough diesel to make it to Point G. Once the first boat scouts ahead, it can immediately inform the others via walkie-talkie, and we don’t necessarily have to stick to the main routes; we could traverse through the streets and alleys instead."
"One more person per boat shouldn’t be a problem." For instance, the helmsman could sit directly on the rear cushion instead of inside the boat, and one foot could also rest on the cushion. The person at the bow could lie sideways, hugging the outer wall cushion and using a hook gun to push away obstructions. As such, there would be a lot of space left in the middle, enough for a person to lie flat and freely turn over. Lin Wu said, "But this means abandoning a lot of supplies."
There were a lot of Survival supplies on the makeshift boat.
Shana said, "I have given it some thought. It’s definitely going to rain tomorrow, so we can abandon all the fresh water... We’ll carry basic necessities for Survival, such as a small diesel generator, solar panels, a small amount of food, and all of our weapons and ammunition."
Lin Wu said, "Are we putting all our eggs in one basket? We aim to reach Point G by tonight, rest, wait for the flood to recede, and be the first ones to reach the Southwest Warehouse to establish a shelter. But right now, we have no clue about how many supplies are left in the warehouse, or if the warehouse is still intact at all."
Shana replied, "There’s no turning back. If the warehouse doesn’t have enough supplies to ensure our survival, we’re doomed. Even if there were another way, it would only mean a slower death."
Lin Wu commented, "This doesn’t seem like your style."
Shana said, "After the catastrophe, there’s plague. Besides the zombies, we’ve also seen a lot of already rotting animals and human corpses. Once the floodwaters recede, this city will be unfit for human habitation for a while. This flood has essentially scrubbed the southwest clean, washing the filth all over the city."
Shana continued, "I believe no other survivors will be able to return to the southwest for a short time, which is an opportunity for us. If we don’t abandon the supplies, we’ll have to rest tonight in wet clothes, possibly hungry. Setting out again in the morning, the large flotilla might face more problems."
Shana concluded, "It’s not that I want to gamble; it’s that I have no choice."
After Shana’s reasoning, Lin Wu nodded, "I support your plan."
