Chapter 807: Chapter 362: Interception
Shana said, "Since we’re heading to the safe house, let’s all go and play with a barrel of fuel for two hours."
Maya looked at Stone, and Stone nodded. Maya said, "Okay." Although fuel was scarce, their cars couldn’t operate in the snow during winter, and Snow Egg still managed to produce a barrel of fuel every day.
Just then, the system alarm went off. Someone had breached the base’s safety zone, prompting everyone to immediately set down their bowls and chopsticks and grab their backpacks to descend the stairs. Maya checked the electronic map and said, "Don’t shoot by mistake, it’s an NPC merchant."
The group met the NPC merchant as he headed for the rooftop. The indoor spaces were already occupied, which meant the commerce area could only be established on the rooftop. Accompanying the merchant were barely a dozen zombies, mainly because the main roads were clear of zombies and the surroundings had already been scavenged bare by the Shadows. The NPC had wound and turned several times, scarcely managing to bring this minor surprise.
The merchant had a fairly complete set of goods, including all the essential Skill Books. The currently active Life Skills were Little Knife’s Lichenology and Shana’s clothes making.
Shana’s clothes making was like a magic skill, a pity it hadn’t been upgraded. One couldn’t blame Shana, as upgrading clothes making required proficiency and wasted a lot of fabric. The current skill level could not produce clothes as good as those available for purchase with points during events.
Little Knife’s Lichenology was crucial for gathering herbs, which were needed to manufacture Serum injections, requiring auxiliary medicine, antibiotics, any herbal plants would do.
Moreover, Maya’s role as a general practitioner was merely for emergencies. As the living conditions worsened, a large base like theirs was in dire need of a dedicated doctor.
Shana calculated the prices and noted that the old Serum injections had significantly dropped in price, the exchange rate plummeting from 0.1 to 0.05. They needed to buy a reset skill book and then a Life Skills book, which would only be enough for one person. Before this, they had to discuss whether to choose a Biochemist or a Surgeon. Other than not being able to treat the zombie virus, the general practitioner also had a critical flaw—it couldn’t learn Combat Medicine. Combat Medicine was a lifesaving method of remote treatment.
Maya offered her opinion, "I’ll ditch the general practitioner role to study surgery and upgrade to Combat Medicine. As for the Biochemist, let’s not bother, we can produce Serum injections to solve that problem."
Shana said, "You’re usually the one on duty, typically in need of Combat Medicine. I suggest I learn it, and you keep your general skills to treat diseases."
Lin Wu said, "Your clothes making might be useless to us, but you can still make and sell clothes."
Snow Egg shared its thoughts, "Comparatively speaking, Shana, who goes on fewer missions and closer missions, would be more suitable than Maya."
Lin Meng timidly raised her hand and said, "I’m here."
Everyone turned to look at Lin Meng, who said, "I don’t have a Life Skill, so I don’t need a reset skill book."
Everyone glanced at Lin Meng for a second longer, and Lin Wu said, "Shana should learn it."
Lin Meng protested, "I can learn it too."
Lin Wu looked at Lin Meng and said, "You just join us on missions. When we need someone to cover our retreat and potentially get killed, we’ll send you. After you learn Combat Medicine, who will cover for us then?"
Lin Meng, as if discovering a new frontier, said, "Oh right, I can cover the rear. Wow, thank you Lin Wu. I finally found my strength." Since joining the Shadows, Lin Meng had been overshadowed in every aspect—whether it was fighting, game knowledge, and even her financial expertise was pulverized by Shana. Finally, she had found a point where no one in the Shadows could match her, and it was vitally important, irreplaceable—she could die at any moment...
Something feels weird about this? Nevermind, she thought, she was just happy. This was what value was—everyone needed to recognize their fundamental worth.
As a result, the Shadows emptied their pockets to successfully turn Shana into a combat surgeon. The hefty investment was also due to Lin Wu’s injury that day. If a field operative got injured and no one could help, they would just have to wait to die on the spot. If something like that happened, let alone Lin Wu, nobody could accept that outcome.
After emptying their pockets, the Shadows were left with old Serum injections: five of them, ammunition including 150 rounds of 5.56, 80 rounds of 7.62, and 12 rounds of .50. They also had four carbine rifles, Silencers and Continuous Silencers, and a handful of pistols. They were seriously short on weaponry. Carrying out Lin Meng’s offensive defense missions became the only way to earn weapons and ammunition.
...
On the third morning of winter, Lin Meng’s offensive mission was activated. Ten minutes later, two Alliance trucks were to forcefully breach the checkpoint and infiltrate the airport. Each truck was fitted with a heavy machine gun, staffed by 4 to 5 armed personnel.
The basic success condition for the mission was to hold off one truck for more than five minutes. This meant that anything less would result in mission failure, anything more was a success, and scores would be assigned based on actual performance.
Due to unforeseen benefits from the mission, Lin Meng’s data was entered into Laimeng’s defense system. She could, like NPCs, avoid drone killings even if caught by surveillance cameras.
The mission provided a route map; two trucks would come from outside the town, travel through the main road, cross the highway bridge, forcefully pass through the checkpoint and target the airport. Perhaps because of the previous incident where the Shadows exploited the Titan, the instructions specified that the noise generated during the ambush would not attract zombies.
Based on Lin Wu’s guess, Lin Meng logged a complaint about the task and after receiving a response, relayed to everyone, "The Sentry Card will be rebuilt after the mission, and all the Alliance soldiers will have been killed."
Maya organized the tasks, "Lin Wu, armed with a Silencer, will provide cover fire from the rooftop. Lin Meng will plant landmines near the bridgehead, and along with Shana and Snow Egg, take cover at the edge of the safezone using rocks. Little Knife and I will use the supermarket building to the right for a flanking ambush." Considering the restricted activity area, fire support could only come from one direction. However, the mission requirements were not demanding, and everyone was quite confident.
