Chapter 764: Chapter 347: The Portal

Just like that, carrying the G36, Forest Wolf, and a bunch of handguns, Shadow Squad headed forcefully toward the 52nd floor. A few hours into the activity, Shadow Squad’s armament levels shot up drastically. The biggest contributor was Lin Wu, followed by Lin Wu’s dog.

However, when they reached the 52nd floor, the formidable Shadow Squad once again lost their momentum, because this time the patrolling monsters were Titans. There weren’t many Titans, but a single roar from one would bring nearby Titans over, whose massive bodies could block all players’ paths, leaving only death as an option.

Those who often played games could see at a glance: the 52nd floor wasn’t about fighting; it was about playing hide-and-seek. The most noticeable characteristic was that the Titan’s eyes turned into flashlights, casting a fan-shaped beam of light. Additionally, the 52nd floor had a special effect — every sound made would create ripples, the louder the sound, the wider the ripples spread.

Dawn seemed quite reasonable, posting the game rules right on the fire door. It’s not that fighting is completely out of the question. That’s just the way it is, decide for yourself what to do.

Good news: The soundproofing in all the offices was perfect; you could scream your lungs out inside and not be heard outside.

Bad news: No monitoring or other auxiliary devices.

Unlike the 53rd floor, where a fight might result in an uncertain outcome, on the 52nd floor, engaging in a fight was basically a death sentence. Of course, that’s just the basic assumption since there was still the variable that was Lin Wu who had dodged the grasp of Titans many times before.

Strategy for this floor: Rely on Lin Wu. An extra person means extra danger.

Tactics for this floor: Use the offices strategically to avoid the patrolling Titans.

The system seemed quite generous, clearly telling players the game’s content. Of course, this was also because players didn’t have the possibility of resurrection and couldn’t try the instance again. It was meant to save people from continuously complaining just to understand how they died.

Amidst everyone’s anticipation, Lin Wu headed into the 52nd floor while everyone else and the dog stayed outside the fire door.

Turning the corner, Lin Wu saw the massive backside of a Titan, a mountainous back, and a pair of elephant legs, each step producing a sound wave. Their sound waves were red, Lin Wu’s were blue. Faced with this discriminatory treatment, Lin Wu mentally noted it to complain about later when he got the chance.

The three-meter-wide hallway was not exactly narrow, but the Titan was simply too big. When it stood against the wall, it barely left a meter’s width of space. What was more fatal was that the hallway was irregularly adorned with green plants and vases.

The Titan’s eyes emitted white light, casting a fan-shaped beam as it moved step by step forward. Lin Wu crouched and followed behind it, using its body as cover. After nearly 20 meters to the intersection, the Titan paused, and as its feet turned, Lin Wu immediately pressed himself against the left wall. The Titan turned 180 degrees to the right, and Lin Wu slid past its side. The Titan detected nothing and continued its patrol.

Lin Wu: "NPC location?" Accompanying his voice, sound waves spread out 3 meters.

"What?"

"NPC." Lin Wu enunciated softly and clearly.

Shana picked up her phone, lit up the screen, and saw a new message scrolling: I’m in the manager’s office of the Public Relations department.

Just as Shana was about to respond, the alarm on her phone rang, and with the piercing sound, the sound of earth-shaking footsteps came from inside the fire door — clearly, a Titan had heard the noise.

Shana pressed the phone against her body, wedging it in her armpit, but still couldn’t stop the sound from piercing through; she almost wished she could swallow the phone whole.

Maya: "Throw it away, everyone upstairs."

The group hurried up the stairs, and just as they returned to the 53rd floor, they heard a loud crash. The two fire doors had been flung open by the Titan, lying across the hallway. The Titan stepped out from the fire door, looked down at the phone still making noise on the floor, crushed it underfoot, then turned around and headed back to the 52nd floor, finding nothing else of interest.

Maya instructed: "To prevent signal interference, Shana stay nearby and maintain communication with Lin Wu. Everyone else follows me back to the 53rd floor to look for other phones." Clearly, the system was adjusting the NPC’s messages based on the player’s progress. If they couldn’t keep receiving messages from the NPC, that would be detrimental to the tasks ahead.

Shana nodded and contacted Lin Wu via headset: "The NPC is in the office of the Public Relations department."

"Where?"

"I don’t know the exact location," Shana said. "In these tall buildings, it’s easy to find evacuation maps, we should head back to the 53rd floor for more information. Or you could try to pry open an office to hide in and wait for our message."

Lin Wu touched his earpiece as a way of acknowledging. Hide in an office? This option wasn’t favorable for Lin Wu. Now that he could see the white light and red waves, when should he leave the office? And what if he ran into a dear Titan upon exiting?

Shana continued: "According to previous information, there are four areas in the lower floors, and I believe each represents a major department. The central part is a diamond-shaped corridor."

Lin Wu peaked down his corridor to its end, which opened up into a large office area. He felt his way to the edge and a beam of white light fell in front of him; a Titan walked past Lin Wu. He waited for it to pass before taking another look to get a full view of the area.

This area was a large open-plan office space, divided into four smaller sections, each consisting of an open-plan office and three individual offices.

The bad news was that there were quite a few Titans around here, and they ambled along their patrol route, smashing through any obstacles to clear a path for themselves, leaving the place in disarray with no discernible pattern, making it difficult to predict a suitable hiding spot.
