Chapter 743: Chapter 347: Choice_2

Lin Meng voiced her opinion, "There may not necessarily be an event."

Lin Wu said, "You’re too naive. If they introduced mandatory hardcore activities at the end of summer, they surely won’t let us off at the end of autumn. Hmm? Will you be doing your activities as a Fortress agent, or will you join us in the regular events?"

Lin Meng’s eyes widened, "I hadn’t thought about this."

Lin Wu said, "You could be a spy."

Lin Meng protested, "Oh, spy is such an ugly word, call it undercover."

Lin Wu nodded, "As long as their points are low enough, your ranking can be high enough."

Lin Meng’s eyes widened again, "I hadn’t thought that far." The Dark Devil really had a lot of tricks up his sleeve.

Lin Wu asked, "Then what were you thinking?"

Without thinking, Lin Meng blurted out, "I’m not familiar with them, I’m friends with you guys."

Stone corrected, "You are a member of Shadow, you’re our accomplice."

Lin Meng corrected, "Uncle, it’s companion." Spy and undercover, accomplice and companion, although similar in meaning, are complete opposites on a moral level.

"Companion, companion," Stone readily agreed with a hearty laugh.

During the meeting, Lin Meng suggested that for the third copy of the defense task, all points should be spent on buying fuel. This proposal was rejected by Maya and Stone. Maya believed there was plenty of time for defense tasks in the winter. Stone, on the other hand, maintained that agents of Shadow absolutely could not be the agents with the lowest points.

Now, in Stone’s eyes, Lin Meng was particularly agreeable, since he had been bribed with a leather jacket. After all, it was the first time he had received a gift since becoming the Great Commander a year ago.

...

After breakfast on the 20th, Sentry Stone and Engineer Su Shi stayed to guard the base, while the others headed to the western end of the upper left road, near the U-shaped highway, where there was a gas station. They hadn’t gone there before because the surveillance coverage was extensive, barely reaching the edge of the food street. Now that they had a jeep, surveillance was no longer a problem. However, zombies became a problem, although zombies had always been a problem.

The jeep parked beside the gas station’s car wash, and several people quickly got out to face the zombies chasing them and those inside the car wash. This wave of zombie attacks was very intense, but fortunately, Maya was prepared and ordered everyone to put away their melee weapons and take up handguns while on the move in the car.

Handguns with bullets and melee weapons belong to two different dimensions. Fighting zombies with melee weapons, you never know when you’ll kill them, but shooting them with a handgun is a matter of an instant. Whether it’s Maya, Shana, or Lin Wu, the three of them had a wealth of experience with handguns and were especially adept at close-range rapid headshots.

As a result, Lin Meng, who was on her first mission, ended up doing nothing but watching. Aim at A, A’s head explodes. Aim at B, B’s head explodes, with no time to even pull the trigger.

After wasting about 60 bullets, they cleared a safe area in the car wash. Since the road surveillance could capture a small part of the gas station, while the other three lured and fought the zombies, Shana drew a map and prepared red ribbons. She would later stick the ribbons on the ground to warn others not to cross the line.

Lin Meng admired the division of labor and combat roles among the three, and she too wanted to be part of such a team and find her sense of belonging. Considering her awful attributes and lack of skills to help, she took a crash course in a Skill Book on nunchucks before today’s departure and bought a 3-kilogram metal nunchuck.

Unfortunately, unlike other weapons, nunchucks have a high entry threshold. Knives, just chop. Daggers, just stab. Lin Meng swung her nunchucks and hit Lin Wu in the head, giving the Devil a concussion. In her panic, she apologized while accidentally hitting her own leg with a nunchuck, immediately falling to the ground and howling in pain.

Out of necessity, Maya had to halt the fight temporarily, and after learning about the nunchucks, she told Lin Meng to only use skills, not basic attacks. Afterward, she would teach Lin Meng how to use nunchucks properly.

Having heard a summary of the situation, Lin Wu asked, "You know about this stuff?" His mind was in shut-down mode; he was trying to figure out why he got a concussion and who the nunchucks belonged to. During his concussion, his perception had dropped a dimension. But he had the Invincible trait; even a cracked open skull wouldn’t spell doom for him as long as he didn’t die on the spot.

Maya answered, "Saw it in an old movie." Although it was an unreliable response, her unreliable answer was intended to prevent Lin Meng from gaining experience in actual combat.

After ten minutes, the fight resumed.

Lin Meng’s nunchucks had two active skills, Su Qin’s Back Sword and Overwhelming Power. The former involved slinging the nunchucks onto the back and then lashing forward fiercely. The latter was to swing in a vast semi-circle. The Back Sword skill added a 200% damage bonus, and with one strike, Lin Meng and the zombie both hit the ground.

The zombie fell because its head was smashed, and Lin Meng fell because she struck her own back during the Back Sword. Consequently, the fight was stopped again.

Maya gently told Lin Meng, "You stand by and cover us." It was lucky it was the Back Sword; if it had been Overwhelming Power, not only herself, Lin Wu, Shana, but even the zombies’ heads would have burst open.

Shana said, "There’s still a handful of stray zombies refreshing at the car wash. You take them on first to practice."

Maya hesitated, "She might kill herself."

Shana said, "An agent knows no fear of death." If she died, the skill would be gone, which may be a good thing.

Maya instructed, "Lin Meng, go easy, don’t put too much force into it."

"Mm-hmm."

The battle at the gas station went according to plan, but Lin Meng’s screams could occasionally be heard from the car wash next door. Yet, listening closely, one could tell that Lin Meng was improving. She went from screaming with each move she made to screaming after a few moves, and eventually, a pig-slaughtering scream could only be heard once a minute.

After cleaning up the gas station, General Practitioner Maya conducted an on-site consultation for Lin Meng. She had seven broken bones, lost four teeth, and 90% mobility of her left wrist was gone. One could imagine that Lin Meng’s body was covered in bruises, a riot of color. Interestingly, her injuries didn’t seem to impede her fighting.

Seeing Lin Meng’s fighting spirit, Maya didn’t stop her and let her go all out in training. However, Lin Meng didn’t know that the despicable Lin Wu had secretly taken photos of her with missing teeth and injuries using Little Fight.

"The plane has landed," Stone reported. His work as a Sentry was well done, but he didn’t like the job. Being the boss, though, meant being a screw in the mechanism, going wherever needed.

"Received," Maya replied.

Some fifteen minutes later, Nightmare appeared at the Sentry Card location, and it took her a while to absorb the information from the banner hung at the bridgehead: her target was actually a player, actually Shadow, and in fact Lin Wu as well.

Nightmare crouched down, leaning against the railing, and took a careful look around before quietly approaching the bridgehead. She used the shadow of the railing and Sentry Card to conceal herself well. She then pulled out a pair of binoculars and observed that Stone was chopping wood in the small square, likely preparing for winter.

Nightmare knew with the dissolution of Shadow, the new Shadow could likely be a command system, and Stone would naturally be the Great Commander. Killing Stone could potentially lead to the dissolution of Shadow, and she could then easily acquire 8,000 points. Turning around, Nightmare used her binoculars again to see Stone collecting the chopped wood to one side and sitting on a stump, chatting cheerfully with everyone through a headset: "Is she going to move at all?"

Maya: "Don’t rush."

Stone: "I can’t play along anymore."

Maya: "Didn’t you want to create a natural farm? The soil is right at the edge of the small square."

Stone: "Carrying soil to the rooftop?" By myself? I couldn’t even get it done by next spring.

Maya: "You need a stage."

Stone: "Alright then."

Stone moved out of Nightmare’s shooting range and soon took a bucket and a hoe to the edge of the small square, beginning to dig soil.

From Little Fight’s surveillance, it was clear that Nightmare was getting restless, sitting down and observing repeatedly. Although she hadn’t taken out her gun, it was obvious that she had the intent to kill.

Lin Wu was dissatisfied with this: "Dragging it out, we’re all risking Stone’s life to test you, why won’t you just shoot?"

Shana said, "It must be because the 8,000 points are making her uncomfortable. If it were only 1,000 points, she would have probably left. If it were 100,000 points, she would have probably shot by now." In the end, it was just not enough money.

Maya said, "Lin Wu, go back in the car. Wear your forehead guard. Stone, always be ready to take a bullet for Lin Wu."

"Why should I?" Stone was discontent.

Maya ignored him and continued, "Lin Wu, you can’t make a move before she fires."

"Understood," Lin Wu replied and drove 200 meters back to the base square. Look, this is the apocalypse, where even a 200-meter distance required a car.

Lin Wu stopped the car at the parking space and wobbled over to chat with Stone. In Nightmare’s view, the bait was already tantalizing enough; she took the automatic sniper rifle off the weapon’s rack, and through the scope, she could see Lin Wu clearly.

With a flick of her finger, she turned off the safety, and the gun entered standby mode.
