Chapter 741: Chapter 346 Defense Task_2
Lin Wu handed Wai over to Maya and entered the defense instance with Shana and Lin Meng. As for Maya, she was still hospitalized, considering that there was no loss upon death, she suggested giving it a try first. Even if they failed, they would have another chance to challenge.
The instance consisted of two cliffs, an open space, and a dense forest. About a dozen tents were built along the cliff edge, forming the shelter. Outside the shelter was an open space, fanning out in shape. The shelter was about fifty meters from the forest, where the zombies would spawn.
Mission Detail 1: There are a total of 20 NPCs inside the shelter, each worth 100 points. The death of an NPC does not deduct 100 points, but rather subtracts 100 points. The total score is 2000, with 1800 points remaining after one NPC dies. If all NPCs die, Lin Meng owes 2000 points.
Mission Detail 2: Various firearms and ammunition are scattered throughout the shelter. Players have 3 minutes to search for these weapons before the instance officially starts. If a player has purchased an Instance Weapon Card, they can use the weapons and ammunition from the safe house during this time, but they cannot be taken out of the instance.
Pay-to-Win Player: Can use any weapon.
Non-Pay-to-Win Player: Find your own weapons.
The price of an Instance Weapon Card is 1000 points, obviously unaffordable for poor Lin Meng. From the attitude she showed when giving gifts, it can be seen: She isn’t poor, and that’s simply unjust.
Mission Detail 3: Zombies drop treasure chests when killed, which need to be touched to be retrieved. They may contain points, various items, or nothing at all.
This detail is quite obnoxious. If a treasure chest drops 20 meters away, do you take it? What if it’s at the edge of the forest? A bunch of zombies rush out as soon as you go over.
Even more disgusting is the lack of any defensive facilities at the shelter.
Lin Meng looked at the other two, they nodded, and Lin Meng started the mission. After the 3-second countdown, the mission began, and the 3-minute scavenging timer appeared.
Lin Wu dashed out of sight with a whoosh, bursting into a tent. A couple was sitting there chatting. Lin Wu passed between them, opened the cabinet they were blocking, and found a seven-shot shotgun with 20 rounds. Lin Wu was very clear his opponent wasn’t the zombies, but rather Dawn. Understanding Dawn’s nature all too well, he took the upper hand immediately.
Turning around, he saw the female homeowner standing, stiffly standing, while the male homeowner continued to sit. Lin Wu knocked the man over, revealing a pistol and two magazines taped to the back of the chair. After collecting them, one magazine’s bullets went into the backpack, and the other appeared in Lin Wu’s hand, along with the pistol’s magazine, allowing for quick reloading.
Lin Wu crawled under the bed, emerged on the other side, and not seeing any weapons, he made his way out of the tent. The whole process took less than 20 seconds. Coming out, Lin Meng was peering into another tent, "Sorry to disturb you." Lin Wu kicked her in as he flew into the third tent. When he emerged again, he carried an assault rifle on his back.
At the fourth tent, Lin Wu’s first impression was the out-of-place carpet. They lived in tents, with earthen floors, so why was there a carpet? After pushing past the tent owners, Lin Wu lifted the carpet and found a wooden board underneath. Opening it, he was greeted by an immense amount of ammunition.
Lin Wu called out, "Found a lot of bullets in tent number four. Whoever needs them, come take some." Damn Dawn, all the bullets were loose; picking them up one by one, or even in handfuls, would take far too much time. Lin Wu put his backpack into the hole, scooping bullets into it as if he were splashing water, allowing the backpack to sort them by type.
In the final 30 seconds, Lin Wu’s weapon rack was filled, and his backpack was loaded with bullets of various calibers. Just then, he found a Gatling gun, a .50 caliber Gatling. No need to change ammunition; as long as there were .50 caliber bullets in the backpack, he could fire continuously.
Lin Wu glanced at his backpack, which contained only 30 .50 caliber bullets. He immediately returned to tent number four, sure enough, Shana and Lin Meng were selecting bullets, and most of what remained in the pit was .50 caliber.
As the preparation time ticked down, the three warriors stood in front of the shelter. Both Shana and Lin Meng were shocked by Lin Wu’s appearance, not to mention the weapons hanging on both sides of his rack, but it was his Gatling-carrying look that seemed particularly ferocious.
Defense time, 3 minutes. The first wave was an all-out attack, with over fifty zombies rushing out of the forest, swarming towards the shelter fifty meters away. Lin Wu pulled the trigger, the Gatling’s barrel began to spin, and then a stream of fire spat out. The tide of zombies were torn apart like paper figures in an instant. After a round of fire, all the zombies lay dead, leaving behind three treasure chests. As for the zombie corpses, not a single one was left intact.
Lin Wu too was surprised. He had used up 200 rounds of .50 caliber bullets in just 5 seconds, and that was after setting it to the low firing rate. If it had been set to high firing rate, he’d run out of ammunition quickly without a few hundred mines at home to support.
Then the most frustrating thing happened, the 3-minute defense countdown abruptly ended, and the words "Mission Successful" appeared. Not only were the subsequent chests gone, but the three chests hadn’t been collected either.
Angrily, Lin Wu came out of the instance to lodge a complaint.
Little White Rabbit innocently replied, "It was Team Leader Lin Meng who agreed to end the mission."
Lin Wu asked, "Did you end the instance prematurely?"
Lin Meng nodded with great happiness, "Yeah, the system is really kind."
Annoyed, Lin Wu hit Lin Meng on the head, "I carried more than a thousand bullets, just for a 5-second fight? Do you realize how many loot boxes you lost? Even if you agreed, shouldn’t you have picked up the dropped loot boxes first?"
Lin Meng, rubbing his head, timidly asked, "More than a thousand? Why do I only have 60 bullets?"
Shana said while on the move, "I have over 200 rifle bullets and 100 handgun bullets."
Seeing Lin Meng’s innocent eyes, Lin Wu stomped off to sulk somewhere else.
Although the location wasn’t favorable, our side had an overwhelming advantage in firepower. Not to mention the Gatling in its state of change, even the unlimited ammo mode of the assault rifle had enough bullets to last until the end of the defense task.
...
Lin Meng carefully lifted the curtain and saw Lin Wu sitting by the campfire, hugging Wai and looking at her coldly. Lin Meng approached with a forced smile and squatted down to touch Wai, "Wai is so cute."
"Hmph," Lin Wu responded with a snort.
Lin Meng took out something from behind her with her left hand, "Little shrimp crackers," she said with a smile, hoping to please. Seeing that Lin Wu wouldn’t take the crackers, her smile faded.
After placing the crackers on the carpet, Lin Meng stood up, lowered her head, and said softly, "I’m sorry, I was wrong. I should have asked for your opinion first."
Seeing that Lin Wu had no reaction, Lin Meng nodded at her and turned to leave.
Lin Wu spoke up, "Hey, I’m fine." What else could she do if not forgive? She would still have to face criticism and lectures from certain people later.
Lin Meng quickly turned around, her smile now beaming, "So, you’re not mad anymore?"
"Not mad," Lin Wu confirmed.
"Really?" Lin Meng asked.
"Really," Lin Wu affirmed.
Lin Meng smiled again, this time not out of appeasement but pure joy. She turned around, hands behind her back, and skipped off.
Childish! As the only mature-minded member of Shadow, she immediately felt a great deal of pressure.
...
For the second instance defense task, the team was five people, taking place at night. Maya, having recovered, immediately took up arms. It was tough to gather a team of five; in the end, they had no choice but to reluctantly recruit Stone. Stone, indignant at being scorned, glared and bristled – only to be defeated by Lin Meng’s comment, "Uncle, you’re not handsome when you’re like that."
This time, Lin Meng had learned her lesson. Less than 20 seconds into the 4-minute defense task, the system requested a surrender. Lin Meng chose to reject the offer. Throughout the battle, she took charge of collecting loot boxes, while Lin Wu, Maya, and Shana provided the firepower. Stone was tasked with protecting the NPCs. Since Stone’s gun skill was atrocious, and they were worried he might accidentally shoot a teammate, Maya confiscated his weapon and handed him a machete instead.
After the round, Lin Meng collected 31 loot boxes, which yielded a Skill Book, a Crafting Diagram, and a Point Card. Including the loot from the first instance defense task, Lin Meng now had 5,500 points.
By then, Lin Meng and everyone else understood why agents of Fortress were so wealthy; the reason was that the agents encountered low-difficulty tasks in the early stages. So why was Lin Ma’s first non-instance defense task so difficult? Actually, it wasn’t that difficult; non-instance tasks were open-ended and anyone could join in.
In short, non-instance tasks could be completed through sheer numbers, but instance tasks, restricted by the allowed weapons and number of people, were relatively harder. Of course, they would be harder later, not now.
