Chapter 662: Chapter 315 Flat-firing Gun_2
Qinglang warned, "Maya, the other side is slowing down."
Maya looked down and said, "There’s a fork rail ahead, overtake it."
Overtaking was exactly what they did. The Orient Express switched to track one. Since the train conductor had no manners, it was up to the train attendant to clean up after him. Lin Wu waved to the other party, though in truth he didn’t see anyone at all. The rear carriages of the Angel were battered and torn; the doors were so deformed they could not open, and all the glass had shattered. Lin Wu could only see two hands waving at him from the window.
Maya crawled into the locomotive’s cabin and said, "There are no factory stations nearby, we’re taking our chances with the question mark station."
"Okay," Qinglang nodded obediently.
Lin Wu added, "If we can’t find a factory station before the event ends..."
Lin Wu cut himself off mid-sentence as Qinglang, without raising his head or straying his gaze, said, "I sense a killing intent."
"I’m going to rest for an hour. After an hour, I’ll come and replace you," Maya said, patting Qinglang on the shoulder before heading to the dormitory carriage. Before resting, Maya switched the locations of the supplies warehouse and the bonfire warehouse to reduce the time it would take to transport the ammunition.
If Maya had a weakness, this was it. Whether it was armored vehicles, cannons, or airplanes, they would break her inner calm, allowing her emotions to momentarily overcome her rationale.
She wanted to sleep, but found it was impossible. She kept glancing at the distance to the next question mark station. After tossing and turning for a while, her rationale finally restrained her emotions, and Maya fell into a dream.
An hour passed and Qinglang said, "Let her sleep more. I’ve decided to pull an all-nighter."
Lin Wu detected an underlying message in Qinglang’s words and commented, "The non-hardcore mode seems pretty fun."
Qinglang laughed without replying immediately, taking a while before saying, "Can love change a person?"
"Probably not." Only cosmetic surgery can change a person, turn you into someone you don’t even recognize yourself.
Qinglang’s face bore a tinge of melancholy, "That’s right, it can’t. Non-hardcore mode may be fun, but how can it compare to Hardcore Mode? Although the conditions are getting tougher, it’s because of this that the game retains its challenge. Strictly speaking, the current non-hardcore mode is not the same as the previous non-hardcore mode, because now, dying in non-hardcore mode doesn’t require worry about losing points, which is like having less of a gaming aspect."
Lin Wu understood that Qinglang’s attitude towards the game differed from Shuihua’s. Qinglang had chosen to compromise, accompanying Shuihua in a peaceful life, cut off from the world. Living in a place free from survival worries, his main daily tasks were just chopping wood and searching for food. This seven-day event could be considered the most interesting seven days Qinglang had ever played.
Tentatively, Lin Wu asked, "Maybe you’d like to join us in Shadow?"
Qinglang shook his head, "No, there’s someone waiting for me over there."
Lin Wu said no more and leaned to one side, looking out of the window.
Maya was woken up at four in the afternoon by Lin Wu and Qinglang’s shouting, "Maya, a factory, Maya, a factory!"
Maya forgot how she stood up, only realizing when she found herself already at the front of the train. The first thing Maya did was to install the Flat-firing Gun according to the system prompt. At the same time, because they had passed a small station, the Unlucky Spider Train respawned two kilometers away. Three minutes later, the installation of the Flat-firing Gun was completed. Maya, at the rear of the train, took the walkie-talkie and ordered, "Control speed at 60."
Traveling at a speed of 60 did not require monitoring by personnel. Lin Wu and Qinglang gathered around the supplies carriage to watch the excitement.
The Flat-firing Gun was mounted on the tracks in the middle of the flatbed carriage. The thing was rather large, 1.8 meters high and about three meters long, lying horizontally. Maya took an artillery shell from the supplies warehouse, loaded it into the gun breech, and after closing the breech, stood on tiptoes to peer through the circular ring sight on top of the gun barrel to aim. While aiming, Maya kept bending over, turning the wheel on the left to adjust the height of the barrel, and the wheel on the right to adjust the barrel’s lateral position.
After some preparation, Maya stepped back a few meters and pulled the firing cord with her head down. A booming sound followed, filling the air with the smell of gunpowder. The artillery shell, following a small arch, landed 500 meters away, more than ten meters short of the Spider Train. Upon impact, the shell exploded—a spectacle not as impressive as the 203mm howitzer but still startlingly loud.
After firing, to offset the recoil, the gun carriage rolled back two meters along the tracks before coming to a stop. Maya pushed the Flat-firing Gun back to its original position by herself and returned to the supplies warehouse for another artillery shell.
All the while, Lin Wu and Qinglang did not lend a hand, watching the entire process. "Impressive!"
"So cool."
"Qinglang, you drive. Lin Wu, give me a hand," Maya directed.
"Okay!" Qinglang moved towards the locomotive but then stopped. He took some lumber from the supplies warehouse and used it as makeshift steps on the flatbed carriage.
"Thanks." Maya stepped onto the wooden planks to aim. "Shift to the left."
Lin Wu, crouching down, turned the wheel on the right.
"Raise it two degrees."
Lin Wu didn’t know what two degrees were, but he turned the wheel on the left until Maya said, "Good." He then stopped.
Both of them ran away from their positions, and Maya pulled the firing cord. Another artillery shell flew out. This time, the interval between aiming and firing was much shorter. The shell struck the Spider Train’s gaping mouth and exploded, instantly reducing its life by nearly half and slowing it down to 20 kilometers per hour.
Maya took the walkie-talkie. "Qinglang, 20 kilometers per hour." After speaking, she hurried back to the supplies warehouse for more artillery shells.
What’s a chase kill? Anyway, Lin Wu did not think the Spider Train was there to chase and kill them, as it was completely a moving target. Unable to leave the tracks and with most of the railway being straight, it would be difficult not to hit it.
