Chapter 66: Chapter 65 Beast Trap
At 7:30 p.m., Bai Ban got off work, and Stone was holding Lin Wu’s hand at the church door, earnestly saying, "I’ll give you all the bullets you want, and the silencer too. Take a whole bottle of painkillers if you need. My only request is not to come back too early. When it’s just a man and a woman in the dead of night, you can stroll around anywhere, right? And try not to use the two-way radio if you don’t have to."
Lin Wu snorted dismissively, "Whoever uses the two-way radio is a grandson, right?"
Stone nodded with satisfaction, "Safety first, off you go. Shana, have a smooth journey."
Shana saluted Stone from atop the motorcycle, and Lin Wu, getting on the back seat, asked, "Wait, did you add gas?"
"Added."
"Did you bring the repair tools?"
"Brought ’em."
After a pause, Shana looked back and asked, "Anything else?"
Lin Wu replied, "What else could there be? Let’s go!"
Old lady needs to switch shifts.
The zombies at the sentry card had returned to their shipping containers to sleep, so the motorcycle passed through the intersection easily, heading towards Left County. The journey was uneventful yet disgusting, mainly due to the Exploding Carnage. Hitting the ordinary zombies with the motorcycle was fine as long as the driver kept a cool head and had decent skills, preventing any harm to the rider and passenger, although the motorcycle would lose durability. However, Exploding Carnage was different—it exploded upon impact. Moreover, with no streetlights and abandoned cars occasionally on the road, Shana couldn’t be careless and slowed down.
"Frenzy." Lin Wu spotted a Frenzy chasing the bike parallel to the road, drew the Silencer with one hand, and activated Quick Gunner to fire. Didn’t get a headshot. Fired again, still no headshot. As they started to pull away, Lin Wu urgently called out, "Slow down, slow down."
Clenching her teeth, Shana slowed the bike as Lin Wu, using Quick Gunner, shot the Frenzy in the head, sending it tumbling to the side. Lin Wu cheered, "Slow down... okay, give it a bit of gas." He landed another headshot, his luck was on fire today.
Shana couldn’t help but say, "Could you stop playing around? We still have work to do."
Lin Wu replied nonchalantly, "You don’t understand. Just do what you’re told."
"I don’t understand?" Shana suppressed her anger, "You just like to play, don’t you?"
Lin Wu responded while shooting, "No, no, no, a good physique is built up over years of constant training, and a Skill Book is something you get from long periods of killing monsters."
"Yeah, I’m actually curious to see what kind of Skill Book might turn up."
In the midst of the conversation, the unfortunate Frenzy was shot in the head for the third time and died by the roadside. Shana, very cooperatively, slowed down, turned the bike around to face the fallen Frenzy. She bent over, reached out to loot the corpse, and asked, "Where’s that Skill Book you mentioned?"
Looking back, Shana saw Lin Wu holding a blueprint and Lin Wu said, "A design schematic." Just like loot, it went straight into the bag without the need for corpse looting.
Shana was speechless: Heaven is blind. In the face of luck, all truths and justice were but fleeting clouds.
Beast Trap: Hunter exclusive drop, exclusive design blueprint. Items that can only drop if a Hunter has dealt 100% of the damage, person-specific use only, non-tradable, destroyable. Beast Trap materials: 10 pieces of Refined Steel, 5 springs, 2 Sawtooth Blades. Manufacturing success rate 33%.
Without counting bonuses, ten pieces of scrap metal make one iron ingot, ten iron ingots make one steel ingot, and ten steel ingots make 1 piece of Refined Steel. One steel ingot can make one spring. Sawtooth Blade materials are two wooden rods (10 pieces of scrap wood to make 1 wooden board, two boards to make 1 rod.) and two steel saws. To make two steel saws, you need four steel ingots.
After seeing the details, Shana asked Lin Wu, "Aren’t you afraid that Stone will kill you?"
"Isn’t that a bit much for just a bit of material?"
"You call this ’a bit’ of material?"
Lin Wu thought for a while, "Two bits?"
Shana said, "You can’t sweet-talk me. If you can forge a Beast Trap anytime soon, then I’ll change my name to Puppy, Puppy Shana." A commander’s privilege includes this perk: all requisitions for items must be approved by the commander. Stone would never agree to let Lin Wu take away so much material for a 33% chance of success, and besides, you could tell by the name Beast Trap that it was awfully boring.
"That’s because you don’t understand the friendship between Stone and me."
Shana said, "You’d have to empty out the base’s warehouse to even have a chance at forging it. You have the nerve to talk about friendship with Stone?"
Lin Wu patted Shana’s backpack, "Stop nagging, let’s get going."
...
A county town is different from a small rural village; street lamps brightly illuminate the road, but that only highlights the darkness on both sides of the road, giving a sense of a more terrifying abyss.
After crossing the bridge, that’s entering Left County. In the middle stands a county marker, splitting the road in two. As the signpost indicates, the left road leads into the town, and the right is the Round City Road.
The two crouched at either end of the bridge, Shana with a four-times scope, and Lin Wu with a Silencer, quietly observing. To the left of the town entrance lay a bus and shuttle stop with dozens of large vehicles parked; to the right of the Round City Road, a large river ran, next to which was the Riverside Park built along its edge. Between the two roads was a V-shaped community.
Shana took out paper to draw a map; it wasn’t ordinary paper, it was grid-lined paper she had prepared in advance. A horizontal line in the middle with a central point marked 0, going left -1, -2... and right 1, 2... A vertical line intersecting with the 0, downwards -1, -2... and upwards 1, 2...
Shana explained, "This map uses the county marker as a reference point, with the marker being 0. The area on the left I’ve drawn is the vehicle stop. If there’s a point where zombies are gathering that needs to be marked, I’ll circle it."
Lin Wu was quick to understand, "There’s a bridge at 9, 9. I think there’s another city area across the bridge."
Shana drew a symbol at 9, 9 to represent the bridge and pointed to a hundred-meter-tall signal tower thirty meters away from them, surrounded by a circle: "Let’s go up there."
Lin Wu was also very good and obedient, with no objections, he took the lead.
They avoided the zombies as much as possible, and where they could not, Lin Wu was responsible for stabbing them. Reaching the vicinity of the signal tower, they followed a metal fence to find a small metal door, picked the lock, and entered it. After dealing with three zombies inside the fence, Lin Wu took the lead in climbing the ladder fixed to the main pillar of the signal tower.
In real life, climbing ladders might cause shaky legs or weak hands, but in the game, as long as you had enough stamina, you could climb to the top of any ladder. As their stamina began to run low, they grasped the ladder to rest in place, reaching the top of the signal tower without incident. There was a small ring at the top of the signal tower, convenient for workers to install and repair equipment; Shana casually opened a wooden box and put a building material bag into her backpack.
Standing on the small ring, one could take in the night view of Left County. Located between two massive mountain ranges, the county town wasn’t large and had a simple structure.
A big river ran through the middle of the town, dividing it into Shuidong and Shuixi. There were three main roads: Road 1, which was the town entrance road; Road 2, the Round City Road; and Road 3, built along the river on the Shuixi side, with a building area to the right of Road 3. These three roads traversed the entire county and finally converged, extending into the darkness.
Shana said, "Shuidong has over a dozen noticeable roads running across Roads 1 and 2, dividing the Shuidong city area into dozens of regions. Each area is filled with countless alleys, and once you leave the main roads, it’s no different from entering a maze. With the naked eye alone, it’s difficult to spot a suitable medium-sized base."
At this point, Lin Wu apologized, "We should have come during the day."
Shana was somewhat surprised that the kid would apologize and politely said, "You can’t be blamed; I didn’t insist either."
"Look at Road 1, the county-level zombie horde."
