Chapter 65: Chapter 64: Rest Time
After the Marriage System was opened, engaged couples could set their wedding date, venue, and details of the ceremony. Couples could send out invitations to anyone they wish, individually, before the wedding starts. One hour before the wedding time, the system would activate a special instance at the wedding venue that would last for three hours, during which the couple’s base would be under system protection. Players holding invitations could enter the wedding instance to participate in the ceremony within those three hours.
Should one of the spouses die after getting married, upon revival they would be no farther than 10 kilometers from their spouse, and the spouse would receive the other’s real-time precise location information. If both die within 24 hours, they can choose to resurrect together at the same place. Moreover, Dawn was very generous in gifting a non-warming wedding dress and a pair of 20-carat diamond rings.
Lin Wu glanced through the game manual and closed it, picking up Silencer to continue playing. Women would only delay his bolt-action speed; getting married would only reduce his accuracy.
"Maya, zombies and players aren’t quite the same. In today’s tunnel PK, I found it very difficult to hit a player’s head. Is there any way to improve?" After learning basic shooting postures from Maya last time, Lin Wu naturally sought her tutelage when he had similar questions.
Maya told Lin Wu there was no very effective solution, and additionally, bolt-action rifles are not suitable for close-range combat.
Maya said, "Silencer is suitable for sneak attacks and is not suitable for direct firefights, mainly because it’s low in power and won’t inflict damage unless it hits the head. You once used a .50 caliber Eagle Sand to break Blind Bat’s leg with a single shot. Therefore, I infer that in combat with players, if you can hit them with Eagle Sand, it would cause significant damage. Eagle Sand and Silencer are two extremes; you can’t fuse their strengths together."
Maya continued, "When hunters hunt, they always wait for the prey to let down its guard before firing. Instead of training your gun skill, you should think about ways to enhance your concealment and pursuit abilities."
Lin Wu asked, "You know how to do this?"
Maya nodded, "I do."
Lin Wu, curious, asked, "What’s your profession?"
Maya replied, "Soldier."
As the saying goes about a big forest housing all kinds of birds. Although humanity has distanced itself from war, there are always bad elements emerging. Each major region of Blue Star had soldiers stationed, not to wage war but to resolve certain issues with a neutral stance, such as religious extremism, racial violence, and private armed forces, for example. In a region with a billion people, there would be only about a thousand soldiers, all directly governed and dispatched by Dawn, hence the soldiers of Blue Star were also called the Guard Army.
The only large-scale action of the Guard Army took place two hundred years ago. The boss of Fortress Company then harbored a private Fungus Team and secretly developed weapons capable of destroying Blue Star, intending to force Dawn to recognize an independent personal kingdom outside of the Dawn System. As the police forces were unable to contend, Dawn issued an order to quell the rebellion, and seventeen thousand soldiers from Blue Star rushed to an independent island, eradicating all the armed forces of the personal kingdom.
Oh! No wonder. No wonder I couldn’t guess her profession, no wonder she never speaks ill of Dawn.
True to her word, Maya took Lin Wu around the base, teaching him how to use the environment to conceal himself while gathering as much enemy information as possible. She taught him how to set up sniper positions, how to retreat to a secondary position after shooting, and how to shake off pursuit from the enemy, among other things. Zombies are mechanically and digitally driven creatures without judgmental errors or blind spots in thinking, making them relatively easier to deal with than humans. However, because humans make subjective judgments and have instinctive reactions, they also have their weaknesses. The first lesson Maya gave Lin Wu was about exploiting the enemy’s weaknesses to strike more effectively.
...
To celebrate the victorious return of the trade team, the first "Shadow Werewolf Killer" competition was held that evening in the base camp’s backyard. Although the game was simple, it won everyone over with its relaxed atmosphere and the constant laughter and chatter throughout the game.
The next morning at seven o’clock, Little Knife woke up Lin Wu, and the two claimed buckets, carrying poles, weapons, ammunition, and medical supplies from the warehouse to fetch water. The nearest water source was 1 kilometer away, making the round trip 2 kilometers. They carried 4 buckets each time and had to make a total of 10 trips. Walking 1 kilometer took about 10 minutes, so each round trip took about 20 minutes. In the end, it took Lin Wu and Little Knife two and a half hours to fill up four water tanks. Factoring in the presence of zombies on the road, it took more time than Stone had anticipated, but it was still acceptable. Twice a week, it wasn’t enough to make everyone sick of it.
Lin Wu had many toys and refused Shana’s request to start work during the day. He took a Silencer and ran around the base randomly, designating Su Shi, Stone, and Shana as enemies to carry out mock stealth attacks and sniping, much to their annoyance. Eventually, driven away, Lin Wu could only take the Silencer alone to the cliff edge to eliminate zombies.
Lin Wu always adhered to the 3-minute rule, counting one shot as one second. After 180 shots, he counted each shot as half a second. If that wasn’t enough, he continued to adjust the count. Stone didn’t care to intervene, as, with the current level of armament at the base, anything under a threat level of 6 stars, Stone let be.
Su Shi, "Boss, do you think Lin Wu is really a man?"
Stone, "Why do you ask?"
Su Shi, "Shana is doing yoga by the cliff, stretching and bending in ways that show off her graceful figure. I can’t help but take a few more glances out of the corner of my eye, but Lin Wu is running around the base with a fire stick chasing after rats."
Stone, "Boys, hm, they’ll eventually find more interesting people and things to do. Heh, and will soon find that chasing rats is more fun."
Su Shi recycled junk, Stone sat at the radio, Lin Wu played with his guns, and Shana? She was also bored, did a set of yoga, wandered around for a bit, and then stood on the cliff edge and sang a song. Her voice, angelic and captivating, turned heads even among the zombies wandering below the cliff, drawing them to the edge, attempting to climb up.
Lin Wu also heard such a beautiful voice, ran to the backyard to see what was happening, and was shocked to find a crowd of zombies gathered at the bottom of the cliff. An idea struck him, and he started practicing being a Quick Gunner. He completely ignored Shana on the side, gritting her teeth and itching to kick herself off the cliff. Quick Gunner was much more interesting than aiming to shoot: pull the bolt, system lock-on, squeeze the trigger, chance of a headshot.
After clearing the zombies below the cliff, Lin Wu imitated a wolf howl looking up at the sky with no effect on attracting enemies, so he turned to Shana for help. Out of consideration, she could only shout a few times from the cliff to gather nearby zombies below. Once Lin Wu had taken out all the zombies, he went to look for Shana but was told by Stone, "She volunteered for overtime."
Lin Wu praised, "You have to say, Shana is really a good person."
"Yeah, yeah." Stone signaled Lin Wu to look at the pager in his hand, indicating he was busy, and waved Lin Wu away to find his own fun.
