Chapter 627: Chapter 302: Town No. 10 (Part 1)

Lin Wu’s seemingly simple task of delivering electricity wasn’t simple at all, he had to walk through a dark passage for fifteen meters, and after powering up, he still had to pray that Dawn’s conscience hadn’t been eaten by dogs. Once the electricity was delivered, the zombies would awaken, and then there would be no play. Even if he succeeded in delivering electricity, Lin Wu still had to walk another fifteen meters to get away. During this time, he could not touch any zombies.

Lin Wu had Wai wait in place, while he set out with a crab-like gait. He hadn’t walked two steps when he stepped on a hand, but luckily his reflexes were sharp and he finished it off with a dagger. Lin Wu then stood petrified for 10 seconds before killing his way through. Damn Dawn, leading oneself into a mental trap.

After the electricity was on, the factory lit up instantly, Lin Wu crouched down and said through the walkie-talkie, "Done. I’ve found a rather weird corpse here."

"Zombie?"

"No, a human. She committed suicide, shot her own head with a nail gun." Lin Wu took the nail gun and removed twenty-four nails from the corpse’s right hand.

Qinglang asked, "What’s her name?"

Lin Wu looked down at the name badge on the clothes, "Li."

Returns, "She’s the worker’s girlfriend. Lin Wu, come here and take the task item—a necklace—and put it on her."

As he walked, Lin Wu said, "Isn’t the task counted as mine?"

"Consider it a debt I owe you."

"Wow, I like that idea. Don’t touch the machinery just yet, I’ll deal with the zombies and then come over." Coming up from the basement, Lin Wu entered a nearby train car and finished off all the sleeping zombies inside.

After catching the necklace Qinglang tossed down, Maya said, "Let’s get to work." Time was short.

With the machine noise starting up, a huge robotic arm grabbed the passenger car, moved it to one side, and flattened the car with an iron fist. After confirming it was quite flat, the robotic arm reshaped the car back into a rectangular box shape and hung it onto the train.

The passenger car was 99% damaged; it could be repaired but required materials. Destroying a train car would provide 10 materials; to repair a passenger car, 99 materials were needed, which equates to 9 train cars.

Maya sacrificed the prisoner car to repair the passenger car. The repaired car regained its original structure, but it no longer had any windows or glass, only a few broken benches, its interior battered and its walls as fragile as tofu dregs, with pieces of scrap iron that could be easily pulled off with a hand.

Maya then adjusted the order of the cars again, the first was the dormitory car, then the bonfire car, followed by the goods car, the medical car, and finally the passenger car.

As the cars were smashed flat, the noise attracted the zombies hidden in the surrounding factories, running towards the train as if summoned. Qinglang operated the crane to create two holes in the dormitory car, the lower one an air inlet to feed the stove and the upper one a chimney, which needed to be custom-made either in town or by an engineer member of the train crew. Either way, the train now had a makeshift kitchen.

Qinglang then modified the structure of a few more cars, distributing them to the left and right of the train, leaving a passageway in the middle. Finally, he upgraded the locomotive so it would use 5% less coal when pulling armored cars.

By now, zombies had swarmed the outside of the train, slamming against the cars without any other effect than further damaging the already battered passenger car, as only tools or weapons made of metal could damage an armored train.

After Lin Wu placed the necklace on Li, he had already slipped back to the train. What kind of task was this, without even a reward. Next was the most crucial step: Qinglang had to get back on the train within three minutes.

Qinglang first positioned the mechanical arm to hang over the top of the train, hesitated for a moment, and then, overcoming his fear, began the challenge. The mechanical arm was very sturdy, but also very smooth. The angle it formed being suspended from above was steep. A misstep leading to a fall would mean either death from the impact or being bitten to death by zombies.

Qinglang lay on the mechanical arm, facing the crane cabin, gripping a part of the giant mechanical limb and inching downward bit by bit. Everyone at the front of the train looked up at Qinglang, not daring to utter a sound, silently holding their breath and waiting.

Maya was the most anxious inside. According to Qinglang’s current speed, there wouldn’t be a problem returning to the top of the train. However, the mechanical arm was composed of five joints, and sliding down one joint wasn’t dangerous, but the hazard lay in crossing the gaps formed by the downward bends of the five joints. And Qinglang was descending butt-down, unaware if he might get stuck in the gaps.

Upon reaching the first joint, Qinglang’s butt dropped and he quickly hugged it tight, continuing the descent. Nearly a meter further down to the next joint, he was practically sitting on it. He tried to lift his bottom, pushing hard with his legs. His bottom came down, but his crotch caught on an edge, forcing him to pull at his pants with one hand. Fortunately, it was a close call and he eventually reached the second joint.

It seemed not particularly dangerous, but it was very time-consuming, and the Blood Mist was closing in. Since the zombies had surrounded the train, no one could go out to rescue, they could only worry helplessly in place.

As Qinglang approached the third joint, Shuihua spoke up, "There’s no time."

Maya replied, "It’s okay! It’s just the Blood Mist."

By the time Qinglang reached the fourth joint, the Blood Mist had engulfed the train, and hordes of Blood Zombies began assaulting deliberately. With their addition, the number of zombies reached an astonishing level, starting to build walls of bodies and climbing towards the roof using the dilapidated passenger car.

"Lin Wu!"

"Received." Lin Wu left Wai behind, reached the dormitory car, poked his body out of the chimney hole, stepped on a zombie’s head, and grabbed the edge of the train roof, easily climbing on top. During the process, his calf was bitten, losing a chunk of flesh weighing about two ounces, which caused pain but no serious issue.
