Chapter 581: Chapter 285: Wild Horse Prairie_3

At that moment, Wolf King detected an odd scent and with a light leap, easily sidestepped Lin Wu’s Wind Stinger.

Lin Wu was shocked. This creature was formidable. "Wai, attack!" Wai immediately engaged in a biting fight with Wolf King. Though Wai was a Hunting Dog, Wolf King was one in a hundred, and his size was even double that of Wai—a clear victor to any discerning eye.

Any discerning eye could see the outcome, and as Wai’s owner, how could Lin Wu not be aware? His goal was merely to have Wai stall the Wolf King. Lin Wu raised his gun, calm and unhurried. "Lock Head," he uttered, and with one shot, he took down the Wolf King. The Wolf King was tenacious; even after being shot in the head, he managed two mournful howls. Upon hearing their leader’s pitiful cries, the wolf pack instantly lost their formation, rushing blindly into the darkness and fleeing in all directions.

After all, it was the leader’s wife that died, not their own, and now there was no need to risk their lives over a dead leader’s wife. The outcome was quite favorable: the leader was dead, and all the fighters lived.

After cutting off seven kilograms of meat and taking the Wolf King’s skin, Lin Wu returned to the campfire. He started with an apology, "My wife serves in the guard and is used to giving orders on a daily basis. If she has offended anyone, please forgive us."

Everyone hurriedly responded, "No, not at all. Without Maya’s command, the consequences would have been unimaginable."

Lin Wu modestly said, "The consequences wouldn’t have been so severe." It was just the death of a horse. If the players didn’t want to engage in direct combat, they could slip into the water from the side and hide beneath the surface.

Lin Wu suggested, "The night is long, why not enjoy some fresh meat?"

Hong Yi immediately said, "I’ll go get the grill."

As they ate and chatted, their relationship grew closer after their first collaboration. Lin Wu had high emotional intelligence; he downplayed his group’s combat abilities and praised Night Moon’s survival expertise. Regrettably, without fine wine, they could only drink boiled lake water in place of alcohol and finished off all seven kilograms of meat Wolf King had provided.

The trio from Night Moon could see that Maya wasn’t fond of small talk, didn’t force a smile or laugh, and avoided pleasantries. Compared to her, they found Maya more trustworthy. Lin Wu was just a bit too slick with words.

Lin Wu wasn’t lacking in emotional intelligence; he knew how to speak to each situation appropriately. However, moving within Shadow, there wasn’t any need to overthink things—living authentically was more important. Given his situation under someone else’s roof, and not to mention the help provided by the others, the friendly gesture was worth some idle chitchat from Lin Wu.

...

At dawn the next day, Hong Yi and Lin Ma set off together toward Wild Horse Prairie. They traveled on foot, with Chasing Wind following behind Hong Yi, grazing as they went. The saddle belonged to a System Item produced in the workshop, with an inner pocket that could hold three weapons. During the journey, Lin Ma learned to ride a horse under Hong Yi’s instruction.

After walking about tens of kilometers for around ten hours, including a break for lunch and several kilograms of lake water, they finally arrived at Wild Horse Prairie around four in the afternoon. This was the only place near North Town that players had discovered wild horses roaming.

Wild Horse Prairie was shaped like the character for ’mountain,’ with a vast grassland by the lake at the bottom, and two gentle slopes forming the vertical strokes of the character on either side, leading up to the mountain range. The middle stroke was Valley Mountain Stream, with a creek flowing out. According to Hong Yi, the melting ice and snow from the mountain peak’s summit nourished the land.

Following Hong Yi into the stream valley, they found a ranch built beside the creek, with the ranch reconnecting to the sloping sides of the ’mountain’ character. The ranch was situated in a hollow, with man-made slopes providing access to the gentler inclines. Blood Heart was inside a wooden warehouse on the ranch. They observed it from a distance, without getting too close.

Hong Yi led Lin Ma out of the stream valley and up the left-hand slope, soon arriving at a cave about five meters deep. The entrance to the cave was somewhat narrow—Chasing Wind could barely fit—but it opened up to a more spacious interior.

Hong Yi said, "At night, we can move some stones to block the entrance."

Lin Wu asked, "Are the four large stones on either side of the entrance the ones you used before to block it?"

"Yes!" Hong Yi confirmed, then started to lay out blankets inside the cave. She had also brought plenty of air-dried fish and a large bucket of lake water they had collected earlier. Once the bed was set, Hong Yi said, "You guys rest for a bit, I’m going to gather some combustibles."
