Chapter 580: Chapter 285: Wild Horse Prairie_2

Lin Ma glanced at each other and rose from the ground to walk to the window. They saw that the campfire had not yet gone out, with Chasing Wind, which was tied to a rock by the fire, pacing restlessly, as if sensing unknown dangers lurking in the darkness beyond the firelight.

Maya looked back at the command post, noting that it wasn’t a night of dim light, but the brightness level was only 15. Maya said, "Go have a look." The two left from the stern of the ship and arrived at the shore, where their appearance seemed to calm Chasing Wind somewhat.

Lin Wu and Maya stood on either side at the edge of the firelight, straining their eyes to see into the darkness, but they didn’t spot anything. Lin Wu launched a drone, which flew out a hundred meters, and through the drone’s imagery, Lin Wu saw a large number of heat sources: "Wolves."

Lin Wu pointed in the 10 o’clock and 2 o’clock directions: "Two directions, lots and lots of wolves."

"How many is a lot?" asked Maya.

Lin Wu replied, "At least 30 in each pack." Together they only had 50 bullets. Maya was a novice, and Lin Wu lacked the ability to confront multiple targets head-on.

Hong Yi poked her head out of the window and whispered, "Maya, Lin Wu, why aren’t you sleeping?"

Without turning back, Maya, with her eyes fixed on the 2 o’clock direction and gripping a hunting crossbow, replied, "There are wolves. Can we relocate Chasing Wind?"

"Wolves?" Hong Yi immediately woke up the two guys resting in the next room, quickly disembarking and standing beside Maya: "We can only ride away from the base." It was pitch-black in the middle of the night, with very low visibility, and the possibility of wolves following couldn’t be ruled out.

Instead of agreeing, Lin Wu countered, "Why leave? This is all meat." The wolf pack didn’t carry the zombie virus, and Shuihua, being a general practitioner, could handle any wounds. If things got too tough, they could retreat inside the ship—if worst came to worst, only one Chasing Wind would die.

As if not hearing Lin Wu’s words, Hong Yi suddenly realized something and said, "This is bad, today I might have killed their mother wolf. Books say if someone kills a pregnant mother wolf, the pack will retalively against the players."

Maya asked, "Which book?"

Hong Yi answered, "The Survival Guide to the Prairie, published by Technology City’s publishers."

Lin Wu reported, "Bad news, another dozen or so wolves have joined the two packs."

Shuihua said to Hong Yi, "Consider it, put on a life jacket and hide in the water?"

Hong Yi objected, "No, even if I flee, they will attack you."

Maya ordered, "Qinglang, Shuihua, make three bonfires in a triangle around Chasing Wind. Lin Wu, set up beast traps, and then stealth toward the 9 o’clock direction. After the pack launches an attack, look for a chance to take down the pack leader. Everyone else, prepare torches and use them as weapons to fend off the wolves’ assault. Remember, don’t aim to kill a large number of wolves; our goal is to stop the pack’s attack. Once the lead wolf dies, they’ll scatter on their own."

Maya added, "When driving them off, shout loudly, don’t retreat easily, and don’t turn and run away, exposing your back to the enemy."

The three from Night Moon looked at one another, no one questioned Maya’s authority or her orders, they each began to carry out Maya’s arrangements. Lin Wu, with Wai in tow, moved toward the 9 o’clock direction. Why the 9 o’clock direction? Because that was downwind.

...

Ten minutes later, a wolf howl signaled the start of their attack. They came from both directions, targeting Chasing Wind by the fire. Chasing Wind was very nervous, neighing and stomping its hooves incessantly. Had they not been alerted beforehand, by the time the commotion woke them, it would have been impossible to save Chasing Wind.

"Raise fire," commanded Maya. Together, the four lifted burning branches from the fire, with Maya moving to stand in front of Chasing Wind. Three bonfires and one campfire, along with three torches, immediately held back the wolves’ rush. They prowled and roared in the darkness just beyond the firelight, sounding furious but not daring to approach.

A short wolf howl rang out, and the wolves retreated from the fire back to their starting point.

At that moment, a huge Silver Wolf slowly ascended a platform in the 12 o’clock direction. It sat silently, its cold gaze surveying the world. In the darkness, its silver coat was particularly striking. Its underlings were split into two groups, gathered at the 10 o’clock and 2 o’clock positions, waiting for it to give the charge command.

Show offs get struck by lightning. Maya pulled the trigger, and the crossbow arrow soared, aiming at the black silhouette in the distance. The weapon was good, the aim precise, but the range fell short. The heavy crossbow’s trajectory approached a straight line, but was not perfectly linear; ultimately, the arrow grazed one meter past the Wolf King, and with no killing force, it harmlessly fell onto the grass.

Offend the king and face retribution, no matter the distance!

The Wolf King raised his head and howled long and loud, the pack howling in response. As the howling ceased, countless Night Moon Wolves sprinted through the darkness, charging at the campfire. Maya and her companions could hear the running, the howling, but in the night they could only see pairs of golden yellow eyes quickly closing in.

Maya gave the order, "Stay close to the campfire." In the system, wood sticks from the fire were defined as improvised blunt weapons.

The four of them, each holding a fire stick, stood by the campfire. The first wolf appeared at the edge of the firelight, took a few strides and pounced toward Shuihua, only to be hit in the head by her fire stick. This was thanks to Maya’s simple order; if they had stayed close to the darkness, they would have been pounced on without any time to react.

The wolf that had been struck by the fire stick howled and jumped erratically before fleeing back into the darkness, marking the beginning of the pack’s assault. However, with four fires illuminating a twenty-square-meter area sufficiently, and with wolves’ natural fear of fire, their courageous charge into the firelight slowed. Some wolves growled in preparation to strike, others prowled around, clearly disliking the battlefield.
