Chapter 564: Chapter 279 Defending the City (Part 2)_2
However, after the Exploding Carnage were successively blown apart, the twenty or so Frenzy from the rear ranks of the zombies immediately began their attack, launching themselves at Nightmare and Maya from three directions. Nightmare and Maya burst-fired at two more Exploding Carnage before quickly retreating toward the triangular formation, with Snow Egg, Cotton, and Horse Soul providing covering fire. The Frenzy, like charging cavalry, kept falling to the ground in the hail of bullets, but the remaining ones charged forward without hesitation.
To avoid friendly fire, two Frenzy that were in a direct line with Nightmare and Maya got close, and Lin Wu shouted, "Maya."
Maya turned and fell backward, emptying her magazine. Not only did she dodge the Frenzy’s dive, but she also sent it flying to one side. Horse Soul seized the opportunity for a close-range burst-fire to send another Frenzy flying.
No sooner had the crisis with the Frenzy been resolved than more Exploding Carnage swarmed in. Nightmare and Maya could only counterattack and were once again driven back by the Frenzy, counterattack, and driven back again. During the two-minute tug-of-war, both Nightmare and Maya were injured and infected with the zombie virus. The good news was the external injuries were self-healing, allowing them to continue fighting without treatment.
In the fifth wave, the Titans finally made their entrance as a team. The wave started with twelve Titans and only Titans. They charged in teams of three at each of the four doors. As they burst into the building, the second batch of twelve Titans was being spawned for the fifth wave.
The back door was the first to suffer misfortune. Players separated by a fence managed to kill two and a half Titans, but the third one caused the ground to shake, knocking everyone to the ground. As the Titan threatened to squeeze through the small door, Lin Wu managed to find time for a follow-up shot to kill it.
The fifth wave, though seemingly terrifying, was not large in number and was actually a test of the players’ firepower and accuracy. Once a Titan stumbled for the first time, it could be continuously shot at because its movement became predictable. Therefore, as soon as a Titan stumbled, someone would keep shooting at it until it was killed. With Forest Wolf in the front and Barrett in the back, the Titans posed little threat to the players in the fifth wave.
The fifth wave lasted only 45 seconds, and the sixth wave brought in a mix of units. With only 6 minutes left until the end of the siege, the players had used less than half of their ammunition. Considering this, the chances of holding the Sawmill were high.
The sixth wave combined ordinary zombies with the Frenzy, interspersed with a few Exploding Carnage. Fortunately, the Exploding Carnage were too tall to hide and were prioritized by everyone for burst shooting. Even if they inhaled some toxic gas, it did not significantly hinder them. The real trouble was the damn Frenzy hiding among the horde. They were hard to knock down, and when the zombies covering them fell, they would pounce at the triangular formation, catching it by surprise several times and injuring many.
Snow Egg was seriously injured and lost the ability to continue fighting. Maya initiated Plan 2, Stone drove the armored vehicle, and the rear team put Snow Egg onto the vehicle, where Snow Egg was strapped in and treated by two doctors via remote link.
The next to evacuate the battlefield was Horse Soul. With the loss of Horse Soul and Snow Egg, the front team’s firepower diminished. However, due to the small shooting range, and thanks to the outstanding performance of Maya and Nightmare, they still held off the sixth wave.
The seventh wave added a small number of Titans to the basis of the sixth wave, but this seemingly insignificant change was very lethal. One Titan reached the east gate and grabbed a zombie beside it, throwing it at Lin Wu. Lin Wu quickly leaned back to dodge the incoming zombie. The zombie missed him but hit the hanging rack, causing it to sway dangerously and almost making Lin Wu fall. In such a situation, Lin Wu temporarily lost the ability to contain the Titan.
As the swaying of the hanging rack slowed, Lin Wu prepared to get up and continue working, but two more zombies were thrown at him, one hit the hanging rack, the other passed underneath it and was tossed to the rear team’s position.
No one expected that the Titan had thrown a Frenzy. The Frenzy that hit the hanging rack fell into the triangular formation, concussed and completely bewildered, and was ruthlessly killed by the players. The Frenzy thrown toward the back door dissipated some of its force by touching the fence with its limbs, then counterattacked towards Shana beside it, grabbing her head like a monkey and starting to bite wildly. Chaos erupted in the rear team.
Maya immediately went to support the rear team, and soon after, the front team was breached, with four Frenzy rushing into the triangular formation.
Lin Wu, with his determination maxed out, jumped down from the hanging rack, holding the Beretta Lock Head, and shot a round at the four Frenzy. Two of the Frenzy, previously injured, were killed on the spot, while Nightmare took down another, and the last Frenzy bit Cotton and held on tenaciously.
With both the front and rear teams in disarray, Nightmare shouted as he retreated while shooting, "Titans."
Meanwhile, having dealt with the crisis in the rear team and positioned between the front and rear teams, Maya ordered, "Retreat."
Stone, stationed outside the safe area, immediately drove the armored vehicle over, "Kill the Exploding Carnage." The rear team, already in disarray, agreed in a panic.
Lin Wu, on hearing the Nightmare alert about the Titan, stood up from his position, shoved a Frenzy corpse aside, and fired at the approaching Titan. Though he missed the head, the already injured Titan stumbled from the hit. Nightmare stood half a step in front of Lin Wu, protecting him and killing every zombie that tried to breach their defenses. After running out of rifle ammo and with no time to reload, she pulled out her pistol and began picking off targets. She fought to buy time, to give Lin Wu the opportunity to kill the Titan.
But Lin Wu dropped the ball at the critical moment. The shot he fired was his last bullet; the Forest Wolf only had five bullets per magazine, and now they were all spent. As he was reloading, the Titan recovered from its stumble, grabbed Nightmare by the head, and slammed her violently to the ground. Lin Wu’s killing shot came too late; as he killed the Titan, Nightmare was also declared dead.
He pulled the bolt, locked the head, and instantly killed the charging Frenzy, then Lin Wu retreated from the position to the west gate. However, the situation at the back door was worse than Lin Wu had anticipated due to a misunderstanding of Maya’s orders by the rear team. According to Maya’s command, a retreat meant just that: to leave everything behind, unless one was tasked with covering the retreat.
The question: Should they prioritize evacuating the injured, Shana and Cotton, first?
Due to the pressing time and tense situation, without the ability to communicate, a group was executing two orders, making the already narrow door even more cramped. Maya immediately ordered, "Evacuate the injured first, Little Knife cover the armored vehicle."
As Maya turned around, she saw Lin Wu at the west gate countering the zombies with his pistol and was shocked. Had their position fallen so quickly? She raised her gun and joined the fight: "Quick."
The armored vehicle drifted, accurately aligning with the back door. Little Knife fired bursts at the Exploding Carnage outside the fence, and the other zombies began to frenziedly attack the armored vehicle. Dashuang and Cotton quickly got Shana into the vehicle, then Cotton helped Peanut inside.
While Maya was reloading, a zombie that flew at them hit Lin Wu, knocking him backward. With no one to suppress them, the zombies lunged like mad. Maya, gun in one hand, grabbed Lin Wu by the collar with the other hand and dragged him back.
Everything happened swiftly; when Little Knife emerged from the small iron gate and into the armored vehicle, Stone saw from the rearview mirror that Lin Wu and Maya were overwhelmed by the zombie horde.
Stone felt a cold chill: Shadow was finished.
A burst of flame rose up; in his final moments, Lin Wu took out the last four Incendiary Grenades he carried, effectively blocking the zombies from chasing the armored vehicle.
In the tactical arrangement, Lin Wu wasn’t meant to cover the rearguard; he was among the first of the front team to retreat. But due to Cotton, Snow Egg, and Horse Soul being continuously injured, he ended up as the last man standing.
The turnaround in the battle was due to the Titan’s throw of the Frenzy. The rear team never expected that in a situation controlled by the front team, a zombie could break through the defense line and get directly behind them. When the Frenzy clutched Shana’s head, no one dared to shoot, fearing they would kill both Shana and the Frenzy. The delay by the rear team in resolving the issue caused a disturbance, forcing Maya to handle the situation in the back. Once she understood what was happening, Maya ordered an immediate retreat.
Unfortunately, Nightmare and Lin Wu couldn’t hold back the tidal wave of zombies and were quickly overrun. In the end, Maya didn’t run away alone, showing she had lost the rationality she should have had and started to let battlefield instincts control her body. She would never abandon her comrades under any circumstances, even though she knew she couldn’t get Lin Wu onto the armored vehicle.
The biggest mistake of this defense was not considering the Titan’s ability to throw. No one expected it to be such an accurate toss, and they certainly hadn’t expected the Titan to throw a Frenzy.
Shana, who had just reconnected with the doctor to regain her sight, scanned the inside of the vehicle and asked, "Did Lin Wu and Maya not make it onto the vehicle?"
Cotton glanced at the base information and said, "They’re dead." Their gravestones were clearly listed.
Shana grimaced: It was possible for either of them to die, but they couldn’t afford to die together.
