Chapter 561: Chapter 278 Defending the City (Part 1)_2
Four people were still needed.
"Starlight should be okay, right?" Shana said. The wealthy usually have skills in shooting or hunting activities.
"She’s a doctor; she and Emerald Feather must stay at the Doomsday Fortress," Maya replied. Without Starlight, no one except those with serum would be able to treat infected patients. The main currency for trading with the Shadow merchants was serum, and it was running low.
"I recommend Nightmare, Peanut, Snow Egg, and Horse Soul," said Shana.
"Horse Soul?"
"Yes, his Gun Skill is not bad," Shana explained.
Maya trusted Shana’s judgment since Horse Soul had always been paired with Shana. "Let’s draft a few backup plans. The basic principle is to split couples. Half of them will be responsible for front-line duties and combat, while the other half ensures the retreat routes are clear."
In total, Shadow plus Doomsday plus Nightmare had 14 members, out of which the two doctors, Starlight and Emerald Feather, would not engage in combat. Among all the personnel, Cotton and Starlight were the ones without spouses and had no plans to marry.
Since Lin Wu and Maya, as spouses, were both strong fighters and couldn’t be split across different units, the decision was made. The front team would include Lin Wu, Maya, Snow Egg, Horse Soul, Nightmare, and Peanut—six people in total. The rear team would consist of Stone, Shana, Little Knife, Dashuang, and Cotton. Logistics would be handled by Emerald Feather and Starlight. Su Shi stood alone, determined to avoid conflict.
...
The next morning at nine o’clock, the raiding team returned to the Sawmill, leaving Starlight behind at the Doomsday Fortress while the others went to the Sawmill for a meeting. During the meeting, Maya announced the battle plan, using a writing board to detail everyone’s duties and distributed the ammunition. She also demanded that all personnel be armed and ready 24/7, and when leaving the base, they must not go beyond a four-minute distance.
Lin Wu received 240 .22 bullets, 148 .50 bullets, and 60 pistol rounds. His main arms were the Forest Wolf, and he had the Continuous Silencer and Beretta at his disposal, the same ones Nightmare carried. His assigned position was a scaffold five meters above the ground, located above the triangular sandbags. Lin Wu’s task was to shoot the Frenzy, Titans, and Exploding Carnages. If he had the energy, he could also help ensure the safety of the command center.
The scaffold was made of ten steel rebars as a base, with ropes holding it together, approximately 1.5 square meters in size, which could easily support the weight of an adult. However, because it used soft ropes, Lin Wu had to stay still, or else the scaffold would sway.
The major regret was that Lin Wu had lost the advantage provided by Lock Head. In her heart, Maya wasn’t entirely satisfied with Lin Wu’s post; his strength lay in both close and distant combat, close with Lock Head Wind Stinger and distant with his Sharpshooter passive ability. However, Lin Wu was the best choice for the scaffold position.
Finally, Stone, as the overall leader, summarized: "This Seven-Star Siege is a system benefit, whose primary purpose is to score points, not defend the base. Everyone must understand the main and secondary objectives and make clear decisions when facing unexpected situations."
Stone’s words eased some of the tension, creating both expectation and nervousness about the impending siege among the team.
After the meeting, those who had been fighting outside for an entire day went to the Doomsday Fortress to bathe. Lin Wu, who hadn’t rested properly for a long time, chose to eat first and then sleep. Lying in his bed, he felt so exhausted that he was out like a light within 10 seconds.
Stone’s voice came through the earmuffs’ public channel: "The Seven-Star Siege countdown starts in 10 minutes."
Struggling to get up, Lin Wu opened the door to see Starlight’s smiling face. He designated Starlight as Wai’s temporary guardian. What drove Lin Wu mad was that even though alarm bells were ringing in his ears, he couldn’t find the option for a temporary guardian. Turning around, he saw the Doomsday Fortress’s pickup truck already departing. Lin Wu yelled frantically, "I haven’t got on yet, I haven’t got on yet."
Maya, driving the vehicle, was unmoved by his shouts. Nightmare, in the passenger seat, gave Lin Wu a sinister smile. Lin Wu immediately reached for his gun, only to grasp at empty air. Looking around, Starlight had vanished, Wai was nowhere to be seen, and the vast Doomsday Fortress seemed eerily empty.
Damn it! It’s a dream. At this point, Lin Wu realized he was dreaming.
He then woke up feeling sore all over. Standing up and moving around a bit helped to ease the discomfort. Pushing open the dormitory door, he saw that the day was already waning. His muddled brain did the math; he’d slept for about seven hours. Sitting on the Corridor Bridge and yawning, Wai was frolicking around him.
Stone’s voice came through: "10-minute countdown for the 7-star, 12-minute siege."
"All hands on deck, Doomsday Fortress personnel meet at the south gate in 1 minute," Maya called out.
Lin Wu thumped Wai on the head, saw his puzzled expression, and assured himself that he wasn’t dreaming this time. He immediately stood up to run to the medical room, handed the temporary guardianship of Wai over to Starlight, and quickly descended the stairs. Due to just waking up, his limbs were uncoordinated, and he nearly fell. Peanut and others were already in position, everyone getting into vehicles that headed for the Sawmill.
Lin Wu, sitting in the back seat, glanced at the front passenger seat, which was occupied not by Nightmare but by Cotton. Upon inquiry, he learned the pickup could only fit five people, so Nightmare drove to the Sawmill himself. According to the public channel, the Sawmill team was already in motion. The good news was the system had allowed ample time for the Sawmill; while Lin Wu was sleeping, the 1.3-meter-high triangular sandbags had been constructed.
Lin Wu pinched his thigh hard, reassuring himself that he wasn’t dreaming this time. Maya drove on, and seeing Lin Wu’s mechanical and dazed expression in the rearview mirror, lacking his usual liveliness, she couldn’t help feeling concerned. "Lin Wu, are you okay?" she asked.
