Chapter 560: Chapter 278 Defending the City (Part 1)

Maya was busy categorizing and taking inventory of the ammunition. She was principled in both her actions and personal conduct, never ’accidentally’ taking more than her share of what belonged to Nightmare, who was seen holding a book and daydreaming. Maya reminded her, "You should check the weapons and Skill Books first."

Nightmare walked over and said to Maya, "Leave my share of fuel, canned food, and bullets."

Maya asked, "Is there something wrong?"

Nightmare shook her head, looking back at the pink world, and said, "I have some personal history with her, and I don’t want to completely obliterate her."

Maya didn’t understand, "If you have that kind of relationship with her, why did you bring us here?"

Nightmare replied, "I only realized there were certain things I hadn’t expected after we arrived. I’ll explain later; I’ll leave this place to you, I’m heading up."

"Okay," said Maya, watching Nightmare ascend the sloping ladder. She switched to a private channel with Lin Wu, "Change our hideout location and continue to stay on guard, watch out for Nightmare turning against us." She acutely sensed a change in Nightmare’s mentality.

"Understood." Lin Wu would have questioned others what turning against them meant, but Lin Wu never liked Nightmare. To him, people he disliked inherently had questionable morals, and for those with questionable morals, betrayal wasn’t a big deal. Casually, Lin Wu asked, "How’s the loot?"

Maya replied, "Not bad, Blood Meng has more bullets and fuel reserves than Nightmare."

Lin Wu sighed, "Poor my dear sister. Help me save 21 handgun bullets and a pistol for her. And leave a note saying it’s a favor returned from her brother." He was still too kind-hearted, unable to forget the kindness of a gifted gun. If everyone were as magnanimous as he, there would be no more grudges in the world.

"Okay," Maya agreed. Her emotional sensitivity was either dull, or she chose not to waste thought on such matters; she was merely concerned about whether Blood Meng would seek revenge.

Writing on a piece of paper and posting it on the display case, she announced to everyone, "Do not touch the contents of these two display cases."

Curiosity got the better of them as they gathered around to see the weapons and bullets in the two display cases, they praised, "Who would have thought Lin Wu to be such a sentimental guy." Many people are good to their friends, but it was rare to see someone like Lin Wu who extended kindness even to enemies—a feat common fools wouldn’t achieve.

Lin Wu humbly responded, "Just an ordinary sentiment, ordinary sentiment." He received praise for something he hadn’t expected, which left him struggling to find the right words of humility.

As night fell, everyone with their bags large and small left the safe house. Lin Wu’s integrity prevented any suggestions of desecrating the corpses. Everyone happily set out for home, except for Nightmare who, unlike her usual proactive self in chatting with Maya, lagged behind the group. Her behavior made Maya very nervous, prompting her to ask Lin Wu to fall back and follow Nightmare.

Even though it was not a night of faint light, the combination of nightfall and the tunnel could create a natural darkness. Considering the existing danger, Maya and Shana led the group to gather combustible materials and settled in a small, dilapidated house near the tunnel. After setting up shifts for watch, the two Deputy Commanders began to strategize on paper about the defense of the Sawmill by the bonfire.

Having decided to defend, they had to abandon all other thoughts and focus on maximizing benefits. One rule they planned to exploit was that Zombies would not attack the command post unless it was the last building remaining or under special circumstances, provided the building wasn’t too far from the command post. There was also a possibility of a small number of Zombies attacking the command post.

Shana suggested, "Let’s position a sniper on the racks to protect the command post."

Maya asked, "That’s a good idea. Where do you think we should place the key building?"

Shana answered, "The east and west gates of the factory are good choices. We can use the armored car to reduce the impact of Zombies from those directions, which allows gunmen to focus more on the inside of the factory. Let’s go for the west gate; the parking area outside is more spacious, suitable for the armored car to maneuver."

Maya drew two circles near the west gate inside the factory, close to the wall, marking the buildings that needed protection. She then drew a triangle at the west gate, "Stack the sandbags to form a triangle. They’ll help absorb the impact of the Zombies. Shooters can defend the two buildings on either side and even provide supporting fire for the command post."

Maya said, "Compared to that, I’m more concerned about everyone’s shooting accuracy when facing a Zombie charge. It would be best to shoot the Zombies in the head immediately. If even one shot fails to do so, the Zombies will advance a step. So we need to add a higher position in the middle of the triangular defense area to form three-dimensional firepower, increasing the headshot rate. According to the situation on the ground, the triangular position needs six gunmen, two on the left, two on the right, and one in the middle. In addition, we need a sniper in a high position. This person must not only protect the command post but also the two buildings, to avoid Zombies sneaking up from behind."

Shana asked, "Are the six gunmen what’s troubling you?"

Maya nodded, "Lin Wu has the Lock Head skill and high sniping accuracy. Using the Silencer and Forest Wolf, he can effectively eliminate Titans and protect the two important buildings. He’s the undisputed choice for the sniper on the racks."

Among the rest, Shana had actual shooting experience and performed well in the game, qualifying for the six-man list, but the rear team needed a Commander. Maya’s skill level was a given, bound for the list. The skill levels of the remaining players were similar, largely because of the scarcity of bullets and lack of practice. Lin Wu was a good shot not just because of his skills but because he used more ammunition. Since the church on the hill, the others, due to the threat, shied away from guns, but he, unafraid like a pig of scalding water, would take the Silencer to snipe Zombies for fun.
