Chapter 504: Chapter 255 Tugboat_2
Lin Wu asked curiously, "How do you know all this?"
Maya answered, "After I was selected, I spent a week catching up on lessons, learning how to survive in the wilderness from an expert. We can also use nets to catch birds. From what I’ve observed, I think the meat resources around us are very abundant, and that’s why I decided to name our base Doomsday Fortress. Excluding accidents and illnesses, even in the real world, I am confident that I could survive here with you."
Lin Wu mentally gave her a thumbs up, Maya’s thoughts and actions were methodical and sensible.
Maya continued, "To speed up the construction of the cofferdam, we can also make use of cars. I have decided to set aside one day this week to get that done. The tricky part is the stone material..."
"Mm-hmm." Lin Wu closed his eyes and waved his hand, indicating that she should stop talking, "It’s nothing big, just take care of it yourself and don’t disturb my sleep."
In an instant, Maya was filled with a murderous aura, chopping and slashing with invincible force, she confronted two zombies and chopped them into four pieces. Despite her anger, Maya did not let her guard down – she remained extra cautious and maintained a safe distance when pulling the zombies. After the update, she couldn’t even face two regular zombies head-on without getting injured.
When facing two zombies, Maya would step back and then to the left, using one zombie to block the other, making sure she was always facing only one. When up against three zombies, she used more complex movements to avoid being surrounded and attacked by the horde. It was clear that after the update, fighting required higher player skills, transitioning from brainless stand-and-hit tactics to constant adjustments of position and movement.
Peanut returned to the battlefield first, and Maya took a break to rehydrate. Peanut managed to take down two zombies while focused, but got scratched in a subsequent fight against two zombies. The wound was minor, but the damage to the clothing was severe; his shoulder was ripped open, and that was his original attire. It was a good thing that Shadow had Shana Tailor to mend clothes.
After Cotton returned from a nap in the afternoon, all four members joined the battlefield, and the clearing process sped up, opening up a pathway from Route 307 to the slope.
The tugboat looked small and exquisite, but it was incredibly heavy to push. Even though it had wheels on the bottom, it only started to move with some strenuous effort from everyone. But like a minecart, once it started moving, it got a lot easier.
The zombie respawn rate had decreased significantly, with no new zombies spawning on the newly cleared path, and the two zombies that wandered into the area were shot by Maya. This indirectly suggested that zombies were more active and roamed over a wider area.
As the tugboat slid down the slope, the four instinctively grabbed at it, but it was in vain. The boat slid into the water, causing not a small splash. Everyone got into the water and pushed the boat out three meters before climbing aboard.
Peanut took a deep breath, entered the steering cabin, and went over the driving manual once more before starting to prepare the boat. Preparing the boat could be simplified as warming it up. The system streamlined the process; no inspections were needed—just waiting ten minutes watching a progress bar complete would suffice.
The sound of the boat preparing wasn’t overly loud but still attracted some zombie onlookers. Peanut was anxiously revising the driving manual while the other three sat on the rear deck. The boat wasn’t large, and the rear deck was only about eight square meters. They all slumped to one side, overcome by fatigue, lying back, unwilling to move or speak.
Without anchoring or mooring lines, the tugboat drifted on the sea surface. Accompanied by a sound of a steam whistle, the propeller started to turn, the preparation was complete, and Peanut operated the boat into the main system, moving the tugboat forward. Peanut handled the helm, looking sternly ahead.
After sailing for a while, Peanut, who had just relaxed, became even more tense as he could see Doomsday Fortress and had determined where to dock the boat. His mind raced as he calculated. Although Maya, who was leaning outside the steering cabin, was anxious, she kept silent until she saw Peanut switch the control system to the semi-docking state when she finally let out a sigh of relief.
The tugboat slowed down as it approached the berthing point on the Shanghai Dike Road, with Peanut gradually turning the boat sideways, lining up the port side properly. As the speed reduced, the port side hit the shore, causing the tugboat to sustain 1% damage. The damage was due to two reasons: one was the late braking, failing to perfectly control the speed and distance. The second reason was that no tires or other buffering materials were placed at the docking point.
Peanut left the steering cabin, went to the bow to grab a rope and jumped down, climbing the ramp to Shanghai Dike Road, and secured the rope on a roadside stone pillar. The job wasn’t done yet – the boat kept hitting the dike with every wave.
Peanut returned to the steering cabin to check on the boat, and so far, the minor collisions hadn’t damaged the boat. But if they didn’t set up buffering materials soon, the tugboat might suffer greater damage should the waves get stronger.
The members of Doomsday Fortress didn’t have time to rest upon returning; they drove a pickup truck out. They headed to a road not far from Shadow’s base, where there were several scrapped cars. After parking on the side of the road and clearing zombies, Maya lead everyone to strip tires and contacted Su Shi to make a makeshift plank.
Stone scurried over to help out, having guessed that Doomsday Fortress had acquired a vessel. After subtly inquiring, Peanut confirmed his guess. They loaded the removed tires into the pickup’s bed, picked up the plank, and the Doomsday members returned to the Fortress. Peanut was anxious, fretting over the possibility that the boat might sink from the collisions in the short time they were gone, he avoided small talk and rushed back.
