Chapter 475: Chapter 244: New Base
Seventeen bombs in place, Lin Wu checked the time and saw there was 1 minute and a half left. He gestured to Little Knife to withdraw and quietly approached Blood Heart above the center of the grid.
The central position of the grid where Blood Heart was located consisted of a platform made up of two stacks of containers, approximately 40 square meters in area. Without a ceiling stretching over it, the root-tentacles of the Blood Heart wound downward, densely enveloping the two stacks of containers.
The two Titans acted like the guards of Blood Heart, patrolling the platform irregularly. They were the targets that Maya and Lin Wu had observed for the longest time. In Maya’s plan, Lin Wu had only 45 seconds to place the bomb near Blood Heart and set off the smoke grenade.
The first difficulty lay in Lin Wu having to activate the bomb around the 45-second mark, with an error margin of no more than two seconds. He couldn’t be too fast or too slow.
The second difficulty was to not alarm the Titans; they had to endure as much of the cannonade as possible. If they were to chase after the players leaving their positions, the damage from the shelling would be significantly diminished, which would be extremely detrimental to the subsequent assault operations.
Lin Wu lurked on Corridor Bridge, on the north side of the grid, about 7 meters away from the center. The two Titans were on the east and west sides of the platform, occasionally taking a few steps and causing a significant tremble. Lin Wu was waiting for the right moment and also for the clock to tick down.
If there was no opportunity, at 45 seconds, Lin Wu would set off the smoke grenade, embracing the bomb Wind Stinger to reach the platform and activate the bomb. Before being taken out by the Titans, he would leave the smoke grenade and the bomb on the platform.
There was still time, still a chance, and the opportunity was created by Blood Heart itself. Its enormous body rose to form a barrier; as long as the two Titans moved together to the south side around the 45 seconds mark, Lin Wu would have the chance to complete his mission and retreat unscathed.
At 35 seconds, Titan Alpha moved towards the south side. However, at 40 seconds, Titan Beta moved to the north, blocking between Lin Wu and Blood Heart. Lin Wu knew it was over; based on observations from the past several days, the Titans only moved once every 50 seconds or so.
Maya checked the time: "Put down the bomb and smoke grenade, activate them, and then withdraw." Maya might have thought of a plan for mutual destruction, but this time she did not suggest it, nor did she ask Lin Wu to sacrifice himself.
Lin Wu replayed the scene where artillery had blown the Black Bear away in his mind; the closer to the smoke grenade, the greater the damage. Normally, 7 meters wouldn’t be an issue, but this was a grid structure, and beyond the grid, there was nothing. There was a chance that artillery would land outside of the grid’s Corridor Bridge, gambling on whether or not it would hit Blood Heart’s platform.
The worst fear was that after the bombardment, if Blood Heart didn’t die, it would summon a large number of minions, which would completely ruin the assault plan.
With that thought, Lin Wu acted. Two Wind Stingers charged onto the platform, colliding with the Titans’ thighs, and with the momentum, he threw his left hand’s smoke grenade and right hand’s bomb onto Blood Heart.
The Titan roared, and Lin Wu could have taken the opportunity to flee using Wind Stinger and his 20-Star Agility. But he didn’t run, knowing that if he did, both the Titans and the zombies attracted by them would chase him. They might even reach the Corridor Bridge. If so, the containers on top would provide the zombies with the best cover. (The Corridor Bridge connected inside and outside the grid.)
"Mission complete," Lin Wu said, right before he was seized by the Titan’s massive hand.
Maya immediately contacted Su Shi: "Initiate the artillery strike at Point 1 in 40 seconds."
Maya waved her hand, and Peanut took a smoke grenade and approached the three-way junction, squatting under cover ten meters from the junction.
The team split into two groups, one group prepared to cross the sea, and the other prepared to support the effort at the three-way junction.
After the arrangements were made, Maya looked toward the west wall but did not see Lin Wu. Maya: "Lin Wu? Time’s almost up, withdraw immediately."
Shana said anxiously, "There are 20 seconds left."
Waiting another round, Maya couldn’t help but say, "Lin Wu, if you hear me, please respond."
"Coming."
They saw Lin Wu catapulted out of the Fortress like a cannonball, flying very high, much higher than the top layer of containers. In the air, Lin Wu flailed his arms as he started to fall: "Ahh..."
seconds before, the Titan’s hand had caught Lin Wu. It raised Lin Wu up to smash his head against the ground. But Lin Wu’s 20-Star Agility was no joke. Inside the Titan’s hand, he burned stamina to duck and shrink his head, and the Titan’s fist hit the ground, but Lin Wu remained unharmed.
Through this maneuver, Lin Wu’s lower half emerged from the Titan’s grip. As the Titan raised its fist, Lin Wu desperately squirmed upwards, but he miscalculated this time—his legs were directly smashed, breaking them. Fortunately, he managed to protect his thighs and waist, and didn’t die on the spot.
Because his hands were bound, Lin Wu couldn’t take painkillers. Luckily, Dawn had set a pain threshold, and despite the pain, he did not pass out because of it. Hmm? Should he be grateful to Dawn for setting the highest pain threshold?
Using its third strike, the Titan with the three-paneled axe hurled Lin Wu away. This wasn’t the first time Lin Wu had been tossed; the last time a Titan grabbed him and threw him against a wall, he survived. This time, the Titan threw him towards the sea.
"Use your feet to break the water," Maya and Shana shouted at the same time. Falling from 30 meters high into the water had a very high mortality rate. If the head entered the water first, the neck vertebrae would break; if the torso entered first, the internal organs might rupture. The only chance of survival was for the legs to enter the water first, sacrificing the legs to save his life.
"Will knees do?" Lin Wu braced his knees and smashed, creating a huge splash.
Starlight said, "I’ll rescue Lin Wu."
"Good, everyone get ready."
Lin Wu floated motionless on the water. Starlight dived in and swam toward Lin Wu. Before she reached him, the first artillery shell landed on the Blood Heart platform. Even underwater, Starlight could feel the immense shockwave. Then came the second and third shells. Starlight tried her best to keep her composure, grabbed Lin Wu’s clothes, and pulled toward the shore. There was no time to check whether Lin Wu was dead or alive; the first priority was to drag him back.
