Chapter 451: Chapter 234 Fortress of Containers_2
Maya glanced at Lin Wu, made a left turn to avoid the zombies, and although her speed did drop somewhat, she shifted to one-handed driving, sparking fire with her steering wheel as she held it with one hand. Her other hand pressed the headset: "Maya calling the base."
Upon hearing Maya’s call, Stone ran over to answer: "Base received, go ahead."
Maya said, "The west parking lot in one minute."
"Understood." Stone immediately signaled the base personnel to grab their weapons and head to the west parking lot. Everyone saw a silver car streaking past at an estimated speed of around 180 kilometers per hour. The zombies disturbed by the passing car couldn’t react in time, some not even managing to start chasing.
The vehicle charged into the parking lot, braked, drifted, and as Maya executed a turn with the "Star of the Road," she also parked it smoothly into a spot.
This spectacle left everyone dumbfounded, Su Shi murmured, "Is Maya always this wild?"
Stone replied, "I’ve always insisted I’m a gentleman, but no one believes me. Everyone thinks I’m a lecher; it’s all about first impressions."
Su Shi: "We’re having a private conversation. You don’t have to decorate your facade."
Stone sighed, "The wild are known in a day, but a gentleman is unknown for a lifetime."
Stone went over with the others. They were already impressed with Maya’s driving skills, but upon seeing the car, Maya was quickly set aside. This car, in terms of exterior design, interior decoration, or overall materials, was in no way inferior to any vehicle on Blue Star.
Little Knife couldn’t wait to jump into the driver’s seat, shouting, "The keys, Sister Maya, the keys!"
Maya pointed: "Warehouse."
Little Knife, reluctant to leave the car, glanced at Snow Egg, who immediately dashed to the warehouse at a pace matching a 100-meter sprinter, grabbed the car keys, and returned to Little Knife with a 50-meter dash speed. Little Knife started the vehicle, and the sound of the engine drew everyone’s admiration. She stepped on the gas pedal, and the car zoomed away.
"Oh no."
It looked like the car was heading straight for a log, but Little Knife slammed on the brakes, stopping just in the nick of time. Pale with fright, she turned to the others who had caught up and said, "The throttle is so sensitive."
Stone patted Little Knife’s head like scolding a child: "Get out."
Little Knife pouted and got out of the car, reluctantly handing over the keys to Stone, who slowly took his turn in the driver’s seat, reversed, and sped away. An experienced driver indeed, Stone managed the car with the calm of a mountain compared to Maya’s wild style. His speed was faster than Maya’s.
Driving around in circles on the surrounding roads, he effortlessly dodged obstacles and zombies alike. Everyone noticed that the car’s brake lights were hardly ever on. Ten minutes later, the car returned to the parking lot—no drifting this time, just an honest circle and reverse into the lot. Since Stone had left the base and re-entered it, the keys automatically flew back to the warehouse after the car was turned off.
Stone stepped out of the driver’s seat and nodded: "Not bad."
"Not bad?" Lin Wu asked with a slanted glance, "Then why are your legs shaking?"
"Humph." Stone, his adrenaline not yet completely faded, ignored Lin Wu and walked away with feigned indifference. The thrill of the ride remained his alone.
After seeing Stone’s driving, including Shana, no one dared to get in the car anymore. They all felt they couldn’t handle the "Star of the Road." If they were to crash such a beautiful car or scratch it, it would be an unforgivable sin.
Peanut mused aloud, "I wonder what it would be like after some modifications and upgrades."
Stone’s voice carried over from not far away: "No need to modify it; it’s already quite good. The only downside is the high fuel consumption, 20 liters per 100 kilometers." One unit of gasoline could be exchanged for a barrel of gas, which held 5 liters. The modified Overlord consumed 17 liters per 100 kilometers. The armored truck they had captured last time had a fuel consumption of only 25 liters per 100 kilometers, clearly showing the sports car’s high fuel consumption.
Since it was in a safe zone and the keys had been away for more than one minute, the "Star of the Road" automatically activated its system and closed the retractable top to prevent rainwater intrusion. With the top closed, the overall appearance of the "Star of the Road" became even more streamlined.
The "Star of the Road"’s biggest flaw was that it only had two seats.
Still enthusiastic, Maya chatted briefly with Shana and Stone, took the car keys, and signalled Lin Wu to get in. The car headed out on highway 99, preparing to scout the spare base. The zombie density on highway 99 was even lower than at North Town, giving Maya a chance to speed. However, Maya remained cool-headed, always keeping a safe speed, and didn’t forget their mission. They soon reached the best vantage point.
Lin Wu, near an on-ramp, launched a drone, and soon found the spare base four kilometers away.
It was a world of shipping containers, countless of them piled up in ’outskirts’ forming a fortress that spread over more than four thousand square meters.
The fortress was situated on a small peninsula where the river met the sea, with the Left County River averaging a depth of 4 meters to the east and the sea to the northwest, leaving only a southern road linking to the mainland. This was a river embankment road that had obviously been artificially heightened, so that even at high tide, sea water couldn’t flood it. The entire fortress had been elevated by man-made means, its base level with the embankment road.
The fortress consisted of four layers of stacked containers forming a square, with the outer walls made of containers, and it had two container walls. Judging from the damaged containers on the very outskirts, the insides were full of metallic objects.
The inner walls of the fortress’s two walls had many container doors wide open, empty inside. They seemed to offer shelter from the rain or perhaps could be converted into small compartmentalized facilities? Lin Wu couldn’t be sure.
