Chapter 449: Chapter 233: Goodbye A1_2
Then why didn’t they let Wai out earlier? In Lin Wu’s view, ten Nightmares weren’t even comparable to one Wai. Knowing there was an assassin, yet sending out Wai, was irresponsible towards Wai. Assuming this was a real scenario, unable to respawn, would Lin Wu risk using Wai?
Of course not. He wouldn’t just stop Wai from taking risks; even Lin Wu himself wouldn’t come. Knowing there was an assassin, knowing there was dangerous armed presence behind the door, yet still running here seeking death, who could you blame?
After exiting the corridor, Lin Ma knew they were right. A passageway that used to have only a few lamps was now incredibly bright, with a small speaker disguised as a rock playing soft music. Even so, Lin Wu still took Wai with him to scout the surroundings thoroughly and even roasted a koi carp. Only after wasting 20 minutes did Maya start to unlock the Sudoku locks.
As the door opened, the two of them moved aside, but there wasn’t the expected hail of gunfire. What they saw was a laboratory, with fully armed guards at the entrance, and staff members bustling about inside. The guards, initially on alert, relaxed their hostility immediately after scanning and confirming they were human, and warmly led both Lin Wu and Maya to the chief engineer’s office.
This was the reward of good karma!
The chief engineer received them warmly, offered them coffee and hot cocoa, and then introduced the A1 laboratory. The A1 lab was more like an assembly line factory, its main function being the refinement of serum.
The backdrop of the story was quite a journey. Seru had successfully cultivated the Blood Heart on level -4 of the underground facility, at the corner of the hallway where the staircase led down to the right, making it possible for humans to produce the serum in bulk. Originally, the Blood Heart was a transgenic synthesis of both animal and plant, with roots like vines and also possessing animal-like characteristics such as a heart and blood.
The guards of the A1 lab used various weapons and methods to capture zombies and fed them to the Blood Heart as food. After consuming the zombies, the Blood Heart would begin to grow. According to the scientists’ schedules, guards used soporific gases to put the Blood Heart to sleep and then began extracting its blood. Finally, the blood was transported to the A1 lab to be refined into serum.
Having found a way to manufacture the serum in bulk, Fortress Company converted Tomorrow Building into a temporary military base and expanded the laboratory. The A1 lab was not only the floor Lin Wu and his team had seen, but it included several levels above, containing zombie breeding grounds, training fields, dormitories, living quarters, and more.
As time passed, the Blood Heart’s resistance to the drugs grew stronger and Fortress Company had to continually change the soporific gas. After successfully operating for several months and refining thirty thousand doses of serum, Fortress Company encountered a problem: the soporific technology humans had was no longer able to put the Blood Heart to sleep.
Since chemical methods were ineffective, humans decided to use physical methods, using electric shocks to temporarily paralyze the Blood Heart. This method was very effective, but it had disadvantages as physical measures were easily damaged. Just a few hours ago, a squad of guards went to level four to extract blood from the Blood Heart, only to find that the room’s electrical system had been damaged by the Blood Heart’s tentacles, resulting in the death of five guards.
Guards had combat abilities but not repair skills. Engineers had repair skills but not combat abilities. In their desperation, the appearance of Lin Wu and Maya brought them hope. That’s right, if Lin Ma came next month, their electrical systems wouldn’t break down until next month.
All plot and NPCs existed to serve the players.
Mission: Fix the two power distribution boxes in the room on the fourth underground floor where the Blood Heart is located. The chief engineer was especially eager; he already knew what the problem was with the electricity and gave them two connectors. Using a projector, he also showed them step by step how to replace the connectors: "Press the button, pull it out, then insert the new connector."
Lin Wu turned his head and asked, "Can I kill him?"
Maya replied, "No."
The chief engineer ignored Lin Wu’s challenge and continued, "The power distribution boxes are in the east and west rooms. Be especially careful."
The two of them listened attentively.
The chief engineer said, "You have to open the covers of the power distribution boxes to see the connectors."
Maya looked at Lin Wu, "After the mission is completed, you can take action."
Of course, the difficulty of the mission wasn’t in the process of changing the connectors. The fourth underground level had three rooms, with the first being a five hundred square meter hall, also the dwelling place of the Blood Heart. This primal Blood Heart, like a tree, was planted in the ground and after growing to touch the ceiling, its tentacles spread throughout the entire hall. There were blast-proof doors on both the east and west sides of the hall, with the power distribution boxes inside those doors.
Unlike other calm Blood Hearts, this primal one’s tentacles, or roots, constantly twisted and even lashed at the ground. In short, it was a temperamental vine tree. It was somewhat understandable—being bled and shocked every couple of days would make anyone irritable.
The hall was brightly lit, and the two stood outside the blast-proof glass door, observing carefully. Why were there lights but no electricity? The problem was simply that the equipment used to electrocute the Blood Heart was broken.
Maya said, "There’s no pattern at all." The ground was covered with roots, vines hung from the ceiling, occasionally lifting to strike the floor with loud noises.
Maya: "I’ll go first." After saying that, she swiped her card, opened the door, pulled out her Tang Sword, and headed straight for the Blood Heart. At this moment, she wasn’t an electrician; she was a Woodman.
As soon as she entered the range of the Blood Heart, she and the tree began a frenzied battle. Maya swung her Tang Sword wildly, chopping off all the vines that attacked her. However, there was a small problem: the vines were soft, and even though they were severed in the middle, one end still whipped against Maya’s body.
All one could hear was the crackling sound of vines falling to the ground, as fresh blood stained the soil. Lin Wu was about to clap and cheer when he saw Maya turn and run back to the safe zone next to him, taking out painkillers to swallow. Her body was riddled with countless whip marks, and she was in unbearable pain. It was clear that getting whipped was not an easy situation when it could make Maya, someone with such strong will, run away.
Maya pulled up her trouser leg, revealing five bloody marks on her left calf. The good news was that the wounds weren’t bleeding and were self-healing. The bad news was that the marks were from being whipped.
Maya rubbed her calf and body with her palm: "It’s not just painful. It’s also incredibly itchy." Painkillers weren’t antipruritics.
Lin Wu asked, "Is there an infection?" Lin Wu was more concerned about Maya’s safety.
"No."
"Then you rest for a while."
So considerate, Maya paced back and forth and scratched all over her body for a while, until the bloody marks finally faded away.
Maya took a deep breath: "Okay."
Lin Wu said, "Feint to the east and attack to the west. Off you go again."
Maya looked at Lin Wu, and Lin Wu did not look back at her but stroked the dog’s head: "Just stay here quietly. It really hurts."
Fuming, Maya went back to the fight, and once again the sound of cracking filled the air. Lin Wu took this opportunity to enter the lobby and run towards the eastern blast-proof door. After swiping his card, the door opened, and Lin Wu entered the small room where he immediately saw the distribution box. Just then, a vine chased and caught Lin Wu’s calf, pulling him out.
seconds later, Lin Ma retreated next to Wai, popping some painkillers and scratching all over. It was at this moment that Lin Wu could truly understand the pain Maya was experiencing, feeling itchy all over, wishing he had eighteen hands to scratch his whole body.
Maya: "Close the door." Because of Lin Wu, she had been whipped for an extra ten seconds, and just in those ten seconds, she had been whipped 28 times. The damage to the body can alter a person’s mood. Maya’s tone and expression showed she was in an irritable state.
The third sortie commenced, Maya held off the vines, Lin Wu dashed through the eastern door, immediately closed it, and then started changing connectors. Maya escaped to the safety zone for another round of scratching. Once she got the signal that Lin Wu had succeeded, she had no choice but to charge into the hall again to cover Lin Wu as they returned to safety.
After being whipped countless times, Maya couldn’t hold back anymore and threw a couple of punches at Lin Wu’s shoulder. Lin Wu was very understanding of this; the combination of pain and itchiness was extremely irritating. What Lin Wu didn’t understand was why Maya hit him instead of Wai? It was obvious Wai was an easier target.
Maya continued to be whipped, and Lin Wu went to the western room to change connectors. Maya kept getting whipped while covering for Lin Wu to come out of the western room, completing their mission.
After resting and waiting for the itching to subside, Maya took a deep breath to calm down, bit the elastic band, gathered her hair with both hands, and retied her hair. Then, turning her head to look sideways, she asked, "Are you watching me?"
"Haha, you watch me, I watch you. There are only the two of us. If it’s not you watching me, it’s me watching you," Lin Wu laughed awkwardly.
Maya bit on the elastic band, concentrating as she combed her hair with her hands, her expression serious and her eyes steady, like a soldier preparing for battle and about to charge. In that moment, Lin Wu admitted that Maya had charm.
Ignoring Lin Wu’s nonsense, Maya finished tying her ponytail and said, "Let’s go."
"Yeah." Lin Wu called out, "Silly dog Wai, we’re leaving." Saying only "silly dog" was something Wai couldn’t understand.
