Chapter 426: Chapter 224: Sneak Attack

The three discussed as the soldiers returned to their work area and closed the door. Lin Wu wondered, "Why close the door? No matter what happens outside, it’s better to have the door open than closed."

Maya inwardly praised Lin Wu for his cleverness. Could this mean that the secret passage into the shelter was behind the door? If someone launched a surprise attack from the outside, the door would have to be opened, incidentally concealing the entrance, which would only be revealed once the door was closed.

Lin Wu said, "I’ll have to give it a try."

Maya cautioned, "Be careful. Although we can’t see the sniper, they can see everything outside. If your forehead guard cracks, run for your life. We’ll cover you."

If the gunman was at the window, while they could see the outside, the outside could also see them. But if the gunman stayed one to two meters away from the window, they could take full advantage of the light and the environment, making it impossible for anyone outside to pinpoint their position. Just like when we stand by a window and can be seen from outside, but if we stand two meters away from the window in a dark room, those outside can no longer see us, even though we can still see them.

Lin Wu descended from the water tower, moved stealthily forward, and made it successfully near the reed bed, crouching at its edge. Before him was the railway fence. Crawling through the fence to reach Platform 2, he jumped down from a one-and-a-half-meter-high step, crossed over two railway tracks, climbed up to the one-and-a-half-meter-high step of Platform 1, and he would reach outside the south door of the waiting room.

Another route would be to keep moving forward and use the railway overpass to switch from Platform 2 to Platform 1. Unfortunately, the overpass seemed to have been deliberately collapsed, becoming a broken bridge.

Lin Wu took a deep breath, crawled through the hole in the fence before him, and arrived at Platform 2. He jumped down to the platform, landing on his tiptoes, but the stones beside the rail tracks crunched under his weight. The sound wasn’t loud, but in the quiet depths of the night, it seemed incredibly piercing.

Maya didn’t hear the noise because the height difference of the stairs obscured Lin Wu’s position from her. Lin Wu squatted in place, unmoving, waiting a long while before he carefully lifted his foot, only to feel the pebble underfoot shift. Lin Wu was certain that lifting his foot would cause the pebbles to make noise, so he slowly placed his foot back down, making his footing stable.

He was only 10 meters away from the south door, and he knew the sniper was scanning from the window for the source of the suspicious sound.

Maya asked, "How’s it going?"

Lin Wu dared not speak; only he could save himself now. Or perhaps Nightmare could attempt a brave sacrifice to distract and gain some noise for him, potentially allowing him to escape.

Why were there small stones all over the railway track? The ignorant Lin Wu did not know that these stones, called ballast, served a special purpose.

Nightmare said, "Lin Wu stepped on the small stones by the rail track." She didn’t know the technical name for these things either.

Maya instructed, "Ballast? Lin Wu, lift your foot slowly, as slowly as possible, try to minimize the movement and collision of the stones. Since he can’t see you, even if he hears a sound, he can’t see you."

That was easier said than done, but Lin Wu was very close to the sniper’s hideout. His skill was Stealth, not invisibility, and it was only with the aid of darkness that he had gotten this far. But now, there was no other choice.

Lin Wu firmed his left foot and slowly raised his right. The right foot made a slight clicking noise, and friction between the small stones under his left foot created sound. It wasn’t loud, but Lin Wu believed the sniper had begun searching for the source of the sound.

Lin Wu placed his right foot on the rail and began to withdraw his left. No matter how slowly he moved, as his left foot left, the small stones still made a clinking sound as they struck each other.

A bullet struck a meter away from Lin Wu; clearly, the sniper had not seen him and the shot was a probing attack. Seizing the opportunity, Lin Wu pulled his left foot in and crouched on the railway track.

Nightmare said, "I can see his arm. Maya, from your position, you should be able to snipe him."

Maya remained unmoved, "It’s a trap. I don’t believe he would expose any part of his body while suspecting someone is approaching."

Lin Wu crossed to the second rail track, using the rail to get closer to the south gate. Now, beneath the one-and-a-half-meter-high platform, he believed that even without Stealth, the sniper could not see him. However, the next step was extremely dangerous; Lin Wu needed to climb up the one-and-a-half-meter-high step. Once on the platform, he would be only 4 meters away from the sniper, and even with the cover of darkness, the sniper would definitely see Lin Wu.

Maya asked, "Does the enemy have night vision goggles?"

Nightmare replied, "They should."

Maya asked, "Did you bring Molotov Cocktails?"

"We did."

The sniper put down the dressed-up mannequin and continued to watch the area in front of him, especially Platform 2 and the reed beds. Then he saw an object fly from the reed bed and explode on Platform 2, bursting into flames. The fire, enhanced by the night vision goggles, blinded the sniper.

The sniper immediately ducked and stepped back; he needed time to recover his vision. Lin Wu had already flipped onto Platform 1, and two Wind Stingers rushed into the waiting room. At a 4-meter distance, there was no need to lock onto the target, and at such close range, it was also unnecessary. Silent Night fired three shots and took down the sniper, and Lin Wu moved forward, noticing some differences.

Lin Wu wasn’t sure if it was due to an update or because he was fighting NPCs, but when the NPCs got shot, their reactions were very realistic. Their bodies twitched, they couldn’t fight back, but they didn’t die immediately. They seemed like they wanted to shout, but no sound came out. Lin Wu mimicked what he had seen in the movies and stepped forward to finish the job, then crouched down for Corpse Looting.
