Chapter 413: Chapter 219 Rest Day
This mission, after all, was part of an honorary task, and the difficulty was not very high. Lin Wu, carrying Seru on his back, arrived at the underground first level. All along the way, Lin Wu had no curiosity, but Seru seemed rarely to have someone to talk to and prattled on about her own story.
Basically, the Fortress Company invited famous scientists in the name of an academic symposium, but in reality, they aimed to study a sample, which was a zombie, perhaps the first zombie in the world. The Fortress Company asked them to identify the virus and find a way to counter it.
They divided into several groups, some researching vaccines for symptomatic treatment, some investigating virus mutations, and some looking into genetic changes. After some progress in research, they encountered trouble: having used hundreds of experimental animals, they found that no animal could be infected with the zombie virus. To make a breakthrough and see results, they needed to use healthy humans—to know if the vaccines were effective and how to detect infections as early as possible.
In the meantime, they split into two factions, namely, the Virgin Mary Opposition faction and the Cold-blooded Rational faction. To balance the contradiction, Fortress Company moved the opposition to Laboratory A1, while the rest stayed in the original lab. Lin Wu had earlier come to a three-way intersection, where a left turn would lead to Laboratory A1 located beneath the Tomorrow Building.
Seru was originally a member of Laboratory A1, but as the research deepened, she realized how terrifying the zombie virus was and changed her mind. She believed that if a few humans were not sacrificed, the virus would destroy all of humankind. Seru, who had moved to the ordinary laboratory, became even more radical than the Rational faction because she had envisioned the end of humanity, the countdown to mankind’s demise.
Through her efforts, she managed to isolate the first bottle of serum from the captive zombies. The serum couldn’t immunize against the virus but could clear any potentially existing virus in the human body. It was thanks to this discovery that ultimately 500,000 healthy humans managed to fly to Blue Star.
In order to steadily obtain the method for producing the serum, Seru’s methods became increasingly aggressive, and the number of healthy humans needed grew. Multiple Fortress agents were arrested for kidnapping civilians, all the way until the widespread outbreak of the virus. After the virus outbreak, samples could easily become contaminated, leading to lots of incorrect data. In the final stage of research, Seru set her sights on her colleagues who had always lived in a secluded lab, certain they would not be contaminated.
In the end, Seru was successful. To steadily obtain the serum, it was necessary to cultivate Blood Zombies. Genetic modifications were carried out within 48 hours of normal people being infected by the virus, and after their mutation, they would become Blood Zombies. Separated Blood Zombie blood could be refined to produce serum.
For sustainable development, Seru even came up with the idea of constructing a Blood Zombie progenitor. She believed that as long as humans controlled the progenitor, it could continuously produce the blood needed to make the serum, and humans could keep manufacturing it. As long as the serum was injected before humans became ill, it could clear the virus in their bodies and establish an immunity period ranging from one day to one week.
Although Seru had made plans, she lacked the ability to carry them out. She needed to return to the rear, where with the help of abundant resources, she could build the Blood Zombie progenitor, which later became known as Blood Heart. Thus, Seru made contact with the outside world, and the Fortress agents received orders to dispatch a Fortress operation team to retrieve Seru. To continue her research, Seru demanded a special amnesty. She had not anticipated that, as long as it could fight the virus, humanity would not pursue her for any wrongdoing.
Shadow Squad wrapped up, and the group, carrying Seru, entered the sewer. The responsibility of carrying Seru shifted to the Double-body Snow Egg. After hearing Lin Wu’s brief explanation, Maya and Shana asked Seru many questions.
The first level underground was Laboratory A1, the second level was the ordinary lab, so what was the third level? Faced with Shana’s question, Seru replied it was just a storeroom for supplies, medical equipment, food, and so on.
At this point, Seru muttered to herself, "It would actually be a good place to construct a progenitor."
"Oh..." Lin Wu pointed at Shana: "So it was you who did it."
"What did I do?"
Lin Wu said, "You reminded her to build the progenitor Blood Heart on the third level underground. You’re one of the culprits responsible for the Blood Zombies."
Shana freaked out: "I come from thousands of years in the future."
Lin Wu: "Oh... so it was you from thousands of years in the future who did it."
After a few punches and a kick, Lin Wu became much more docile. Maya, habitually interpreting reality, said, "Fortress Company had no malice, they just wanted to find a solution to the virus. But the situation was out of their control, and not only did they fail to eradicate the zombie virus, they inadvertently created a zombie progenitor."
Snow Egg said, "The Blue Star history books mentioned the zombie virus, but never Blood Heart. In some unofficial records, Blood Heart is mentioned, but without any clear photographs to prove it. Historians think that Blood Heart is a creature concocted by survivors to explain the Blood Zombies. The few Blood Zombies that exist are actually just soiled with fresh blood."
Everyone started discussing reality and the game, and although this broke the rule of silence while walking through the sewers, Maya did not stop them, but rather arranged for Lin Wu and Peanut to be extra vigilant.
...
Having delivered the person to the agents, they told Maya, "The combination for the bullet safe is 123, thank you, goodbye."
With a sound of a gun being charged, Lin Wu’s assault rifle was pressed against Seru’s head: "Not enough."
Two agents drew their pistols while the Shadow People aimed their assault rifles. Although some were not in agreement with Lin Wu’s robbery, Lin Wu had taken action, so what else could be done?
