Chapter 410: Chapter 218 Chain Tasks
Stone and Su Shi decided not to go out for the time being, while the others, apart from Little Knife, all had the same number of teleportations and were teleported out of the instance simultaneously. Once they were out, they were stunned. Although the backyard was temporarily safe, the entire base, except for the backyard, was swarming with zombies. The western parking lot, in particular, could be described as a mountain of zombies.
"Don’t shoot, stay stealthy," Maya’s heart was racing as she asked, "Where’s Lin Wu?"
Shana checked the meteorological station’s information: "He’s not dead."
Horse Soul broke into tears: "He ran off." The zombies wouldn’t actively damage buildings unless it was a system assault.
Maya said, "Don’t do anything rash, wait for Little Knife to come out."
Peanut offered a bad idea: "They won’t destroy buildings; we could hide back in the instance."
Maya asked, "And never come out?" There were so many zombies, she estimated it was the sum of a 5-star siege.
After waiting for a while, Little Knife came out and was startled by the sea of zombies: "Holy crap!"
"Shush."
But it was too late, a Frenzy leaped from the factory area into the backyard, charging towards the source of the noise without hesitation. Maya aimed her gun: "Horse Soul, take point, head for the south gate, and take a detour to the meteorological station. Call Lin Wu, call Lin Wu."
Lin Wu: "I’m here."
"Why didn’t you answer earlier?"
Lin Wu responded: "Because I was dealing with zombies." He had led a tail of them while escaping.
Maya fired her gun and said: "We’re retreating towards the meteorological station, provide covering fire."
Lin Wu: "Understood." He climbed the watchtower, took aim, and started firing like bullets were free, pouring them into the eastern parking lot. Shadow and others exited through the south gate, made their way around the eastern parking lot, turned north, and under Lin Wu’s cover, retreated towards the meteorological station base.
The helicopter had attracted the nearby zombies, making their escape route relatively clear, and the fleeing group successfully reached the meteorological station base. Standing high up at the meteorological station and looking down, they saw that the densely packed zombies filled most of the Shadow base. The worst part was that the zombies didn’t attack the helicopter; instead, they surrounded it as if trying to squeeze it to bursting. The absolute worst part was that the helicopter hadn’t been shut down; its propellers were still spinning, the noise was continuous, and more zombies kept heading for the western parking lot.
Everyone looked up at Lin Wu: "How did this happen?" Maya was the one who asked.
Lin Wu: "Who knows. I was just playing ball with Wai, and suddenly a helicopter came."
Shana took out handguns and crossbows from the meteorological station’s storage and distributed them to everyone. At this moment, someone noticed that Lin Wu at the sentry post wasn’t actually killing zombies. Maya asked, "Lin Wu, what are you shooting at?"
"The helicopter," Lin Wu said, "they want me dead; I’ll take them out first."
Maya signaled, "Shoot." She no longer cared what Lin Wu intended to do.
From their high vantage point, with the advantage of the terrain, Shadow began firing without needing to aim, hitting every shot. There was no way to aim anyway, with heads moving back and forth like tilapia by the river in summer. After half an hour of sweeping, the zombie horde was pretty much cleared out, and the meteorological station’s Threat Value shot up to 5 stars.
Lin Wu had no thoughts about it; worst case, they would abandon the base. He was just furious with the helicopter, which, despite being riddled with bullet holes, still had armor he couldn’t penetrate.
They reached the western parking lot where the helicopter’s rotors had finally stopped turning, and the cabin doors had opened, with two Fortress agents stepping out. They first asked who was in charge, then explained that one of their members had sent a distress signal from the base. Only then did Lin Wu realize they were on the same side.
Lin Wu said mournfully: "He’s already dead. Before he died, he wished for Fortress Company to donate 100 assault rifles and 50,000 bullets to the Shadow base as thanks for our care. If you don’t agree, he’ll become a vengeful ghost and haunt you."
The agents completely ignored Lin Wu’s rambling and asked, "Did he leave a letter?"
Lin Wu rolled his eyes and handed over the letter, noting that the other party didn’t plan to fulfill their deceased comrade’s last wish.
Holding the letter, the agent said: "More than ten days ago..."
Viral research scientists from Future City were attending an academic seminar in Left County when the outbreak occurred. Using the research facilities in Left County, they carried out vaccine trials. After the virus spread, Left County turned into a living hell, and contact was lost between Fortress and the scientists. It wasn’t until over ten days ago that they received a message from a scientist named Seru.
Seru claimed that they had completed their study on virus samples and had produced a serum that could treat the infected. To achieve this, she crossed ethical lines, using healthy humans as a control group. Therefore, Seru requested an official pardon.
Once she got her pardon, Seru would be rescued and would hand over her research results to the authorities. This letter was the pardon, and the previously deceased NPC was, of course, a member of the rescue team.
Although the agents tasked with the mission were dead, the mission still needed to go on, so they turned to the Shadow base, offering an honor mission: deliver the letter to Seru and protect her until she could board the helicopter.
Lin Wu whispered into Maya’s ear: "Blow them up?"
Maya responded, "Steal the helicopter?"
Lin Wu was surprised; this girl was even bolder than he was. Lin Wu replied, "That works too."
Lin Wu gave Peanut a look, and understanding the cue, Peanut began to ask questions about the mission. Lin Wu and Maya went to the storage, grabbed shotguns, and snuck up behind the two agents. The agents seemed to sense something and said, "We haven’t brought any prizes, but if you complete the mission, we can tell you the code to the Resource Box."
