Chapter 396: Chapter 212 Temporary Base_3

Indeed, I am a Juvenile Ghost. When I’m wrong, I must reflect and correct my mistakes.

...

The door to the rooftop entrance was locked, with no keyhole, suggesting that it was secured from the inside with a chain or a U-lock.

Instead, the two started to smash the glass skylight. Although the glass was thick and hard, it wasn’t bulletproof. It couldn’t withstand their tampering and soon, a piece shattered and fell, crashing onto the heads of the zombies gathered below.

Lin Ma moved aside to wait in Stealth, and after 10 minutes, most of the zombies attracted by the noise had dispersed. Lin Wu, using a piece of rope they had cut, rappelled down to the 27th floor with Maya.

The 27th floor featured a mezzanine, landing in a showroom with many oil portraits hanging on the walls. Below each was a golden plaque telling the story of the depicted person. According to the descriptions, this was a history of the Shuai Xia Hardware Industrial Group’s family, and the portraits were of the group’s leaders over the past two hundred years.

Located in the southwest of the 27th floor, the showroom was where they encountered zombies as they moved along the path, with Maya reminding, "Blood Heart could dispatch assault teams at any moment, we need to find a place to settle down quickly."

"Right," outside the showroom was a vertical junction with two elevators. To the left was the administrative office area, and to the right was the board area. The fire escape plan next to the elevator indicated that the main corridor had a mouth-shaped structure. Lin Ma, at the bottom left corner, saw that the first vertical was the administrative area, the horizontal below was the board area. Above that and the vertical to the right were meeting rooms and executive restrooms. In each of the mouth-shaped corners, there were two elevators and a fire exit.

Maya pointed to the administrative area, Lin Wu nodded, and they made their way to an office labeled Security Manager’s Room, a small single room. Beyond that was the finance department, an open-plan office with several other offices. Further down were the public relations department, secretarial department, and other administrative sections.

The two moved in Stealth, using the Repeating Crossbow for precision shots, and Lin Wu’s scouting, they moved from the bottom left all the way to the top right. Diagonally opposite to the captain’s showroom was the product showroom featuring samples and introductions to the group’s products over the last two hundred years. Some were small samples, others pictures.

Lin Ma was looking for a space with a layout similar to a two-bedroom apartment: not too large, with two separate rooms. It would not only provide a place to rest but also be easy to defend and hard to attack. Allocating an 8-meter minimum safety zone, they needed a space no larger than 200 square meters, preferably with multiple barriers and narrow passageways.

Almost a half-circle walk yielded no such terrain. Understandably, why would the executives and board of directors have a narrow corridor? Just as Lin Wu was about to suggest going down a floor, the narrow corridor appeared. Lin Wu and Maya looked at each other in disbelief—it was a corridor just 1 meter wide and 5 meters long.

They proceeded along the corridor, which turned at a right angle, went on for another 5 meters, and then turned another angle, ending in a small hall. There were a few tables and chairs on either side of the hall and two vending machines. Directly across from the corridor was a small balcony, enclosed with stainless steel railings, and with a table and chair on each side.

After some study, they realized it was the 27th floor’s smoking area. The two returned to the base, and Captain Maya issued the command to secure it. Thus, the 35-square-meter Base 1 was established, and Lin Wu became a new member of Base 1.

Base 1 consisted of two small cells: the storeroom and the radio station were situated on the balcony. They stored the building materials they carried and began constructing the dormitory first. Lin Wu scavenged the leftovers from the smoking area and, to his delight, found a pack of provisions in each vending machine. With that, their needs for supplies and security were completely met.
